MARCH 8 1910 Issuance of the world s first female pilot licence #36 In 1909, the Aéro Club de France became the world s first institution to deliver airplane pilot licenses. The first 16 airplane pilot licenses were awarded to prominent pilots without any test requirements. Beginning on January 1910, individuals could apply for a pilot license based on flight experience and a flight test. On March 8, 1910, Raymonde de Laroche became the world s first woman to earn a pilot licence. At the time, all pilot licenses were commercial pilot license. No licence was required for private aircraft operations. March 8 marks the formal entry of women in the air and space industry. Few reliable global female aviation breakthroughs are known before that date. 1975 International Women s Day After more than a decade of civil rights protests and the related feminist movement, the United Nations proclaimed March 8, International Women s Day. UN.org 2010 Centennial of Female Pilots In late 2009, Mireille Goyer, an airline-rated pilot, launched the Fly It Forward Challenge asking pilots to introduce women and girls to flight to celebrate the Centennial of the first female pilot license. More than 1,600 girls and women took flight in 36 countries. Goyer herself introduced girls to flight in France, the United States, and Canada. 2011 Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week In late 2010, Mireille Goyer established the Week to continue to celebrate the first female pilot license annually and raise awareness. In her late 20s, she started flying lessons leading her to eventually choose aviation as a career eventually becoming an airline-rated pilot. She was the first in her extended family to earn a pilot license. Later in life, she moved to Canada which she calls home today. She received multiple international industry awards for her advocacy and creative outreach methods which sprung today s shift in attitude towards women.
