The first day of our trip we ll visit two cities where iron ore was discovered and mined as early as the 1890s. We ll spend a few hours in Eveleth and Virginian prior to nesting in our rooms at Fortune Bay Casino our home away from home for two nights. The following day, we ll be visiting the Soudan Mine on the Vermillion Range which is one of the oldest and deepest mines. Later that day, we ll travel to Orr to visit the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctary. Our last day, we ll travel to Ely to visit the International Wolf Center, the Dorothy Mulder Center (the Root Beer Lady ) and spend a couple of hours wandering their downtown. Downtown Ely has many unique shops and some of the finest shopping and most intriguing gifts anywhere. Many of the shops feature handcrafted items made in the Ely area. Steger Mukluks and Moccasins are made in Ely and you ll find a retail store in the downtown area. Ely is home to Will Steger best known for his legendary polar explorations. He has traveled tens of thousands of miles by kayak and dog sled over 40 years, leading teams on some of the most significant polar expeditions in history. Steger has been eyewitness to the on going catastrophic consequences of global warming. A formidable voice calling for understanding of the Artic and the Earth. There are wonderful stories about Steger s wife making boots for him and his team mates and their dogs to wear on the polar explorations. Direct from England, experience nine galleries with over 150 objects including Diana s royal wedding gown, 28 designer dresses, family heirlooms, personal mementos, priceless jewels and rare home movies. We will see the exhibit, have lunch at restaurant of your choice, stroll the mall, and maybe get in some shopping. The bus should get us to the mall by noon and we would plan to leave at 4:00 PM.
