CONFERENCE LOCATION - ŠIBENIK The historic city of Šibenik is located in the Šibenik Knin County, in central Dalmatia, where the river Krka flows into the Adriatic Sea. Šibenik is the oldest native Croatian town on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Its population is about 46,000. Šibenik has a Mediterranean climate with daily highs of 19-24 C and daily lows of 8-14 C in the month of October with average sunshine of over 6 hours during the day. In this month the sea water temperature is about 20 C and average precipitation is 100 mm. The city has, next to its Croatian roots, a past with the Venetian Republic and the Habsburg Monarchy. After 1921, it became a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. During World War II it was occupied by the Axis. Communist partisans liberated Šibenik in 1944. After World War II it became a part of Yugoslavia until Croatia declared independence in 1991. When Vlaho and Ana took me to Šibenik in April 2018 I had but a short time to get a feel for the St. James Cathedral a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I was impressed by the garland of most impressive heads around the church, each one a jewel in itself. All were lovely, but one was particularly delicate. I Christened that one, for myself, the curious one. Later, when I was looking for a figurehead for this year s IAMI conference the curious one popped up by itself and here you have it. During the Croatian War of Independence, the nascent Croatian army and the people of May this conference satisfy all the curious ones among us Šibenik managed to defend the city. But the bombings damaged numerous buildings and YC monuments, including the dome of the Cathedral of St. James and the theatre building that had been built in 1870. In 1995, the Croatian Army reconquered the occupied areas. Since then, the damaged areas of the city have been fully restored.
