CONFERENCE 2015 Friday 20 th to Sunday 22 nd March You can register now for the 2015 District Conference. To do this online, you will need to go to the District Conference website (www.rotaryburnie.org.au). Speakers... Denise DiNoto Denise DiNoto was in Tasmania as a Youth Exchange student (age 16) in 1990. At the time of my exchange, I was able to walk short distances but used a manual wheelchair for the majority of my community mobility. I was unable to independently climb stairs, stand from a low chair, climb into a bathtub, or pick myself off the floor if I fell, which I did quite gracefully about once every month. There were people, who doubted how well she would do in an exchange because of her disability, but Rotarians believed in her and because Rotarians believed in her, Denise herself became more confident. Lessons I learned during my exchange still resonate. Strength is not the ability to climb Kings Canyon with 80 other exchange students. It is advocating for your rights when facing discrimination from those in power. Denise DiNoto asks how would her country be different, and how would the disability community be too if we always expected that people with disabilities would be able to work? She says she was fortunate because those around her expected that she would do well in school, go to college and complete a degree. She heard this from parents, teachers and her doctors; she was told that using a wheelchair was no excuse for slacking. After graduation, Denise began working full time as a speechlanguage pathologist and she has maintained full-time employment with various jobs for nearly 20 years. Why do people feel the need to remark on my success? Is it because others don t expect that a woman who uses a wheelchair would achieve these milestones? Happy New Year to all. MICHAEL S MEMO Firstly, a thank you to President-elect Rob and Secretary Roy for holding the fort at the end of last year, as I dealt with my mother s passing. Looking ahead to the second part of the Rotary year - we have some planning to do. At our first Club Assembly this week, I would like to raise these three items for discussion. (1) At the December meeting, the board set up a selection process for the position of incoming Craft Fair Director. I would like to ensure that everyone is aware of this process and the timelines we have in mind. (2) Michael Plunkett now chairs the Rotary Pavilion Committee. This group met in December and I have asked them to have a draft plan ready for consideration and discussion by the full club in May. (3) The club s financial position and consideration of future major projects. This item may well overlap with planning for the Rotary Pavilion. At future Club Assembly meetings, we will continue the pattern of hearing from each Director in turn, to update everyone on the activities within their portfolios. Looking forward to Lighting up Rotary in Deloraine in 2015! VOCATIONAL SERVICE TERTIARY SCHOLARSHIP This is your last opportunity to encourage someone to apply for this Scholarship Applications close with Vocational Service Director Peter on Friday 16 th January. This is for students that will be commencing Tertiary education from the Deloraine and Westbury district in 2015. Written applications outlining academic record, intended study programme, and other relevant information, to be forwarded to Vocational Service Director Peter Griffin, by Friday 16 th January, 2015. Interviews of short listed applicants will be held late January, early February 2015. TCF The next TCF Meeting will be held on Wednesday 21 st January 7.00p.m. at Rotary Pavilion From DG Ken: DISTRICT NEWS Christmas Day and New Years Eve have come and gone for yet another year and we are off and racing into 2015. Happy New Year everyone, we hope the Rotary year ahead for you is a prosperous, productive and event-filled one that you can look back on with pride as we all attempt to 'Light up Rotary' in our individual ways. During the break Lois and I got to meet the NGSE Team who will be travelling to Turkey in April. We had breakfast with them at Alex and Penny Brownlie's Tranmere home on 2 nd January and very much appreciated the hospitality. Alex is doing a magnificent job in organising the exchange and his task wasn't made easy with 10 very well qualified applicants for the positions. In the end it was decided that Kate Jones, Hannah Atkins, Tara Broun and Damien Dry were the ones who were best suited and I am convinced that the four of them will be great ambassadors for the District. Thank-you to RC Launceston, Salamanca, Latrobe, Deloraine and Burnie for partsponsoring them thereby making it possible for the four young graduates to go on a once in a lifetime experience connected with the ANZAC Centenary. Another item of good news is that The Baljyoti School Project that I spoke about during my official visits is now fully funded. The remaining funds needed were generated via the second round of district grants. An initial payment has been forwarded to RC Hetauda in Nepal and the advice is that work will be starting soon. A big thankyou to all clubs and individuals who contributed so generously enabling yet another humanitarian aid project to proceed. You would all be well aware of the disastrous bushfires that have occurred in the Adelaide Hills and I have spoken to DG Gerry Casburn from D9520 to ascertain how we can best assist. At present D9520 are taking a watching brief and DG Gerry will let me know as soon as they have something mobilised. As soon as I know I'll pass the details on.
