Cape St Martin Private Nature Reserve CHAIRMAN S REPORT Quarterly Newsletter No.3 1 April 2018 A newsletter providing free flow information between home owners. From the editor : Hi all A very happy New Year to you all! I sincerely hope that 2018 will be a wonderful year for each and every one of you and that all your goals, dreams and aspirations for the year ahead will be fulfilled. Enjoy the newsletter! I m looking forward to your feedback, comments, inputs, queries, issues or suggestions to enhance the news. Kind regards Marie (marie@tpsconsult.co.za) Message from the chairman Dear home owners, Best wishes for 2018! The year is well underway and I d like to take the opportunity to update you on a number of developments. Please also inform any guests you may have of the points relevant to them. The water crises remains a significant concern for all of us and the management committee has taken a number of steps to improve controls around water usage. These measures include: - more regular checks of the bulk water meters to identify leaks promptly and submitting water readings to the municipality ourselves. - We have also approved new building rules to allow for the installation of water tanks (please refer the building rules to ensure your tank is installed in line with the requirements). The maintenance of the estate is important to all of us, especially to retain the character of the nature estate. This does represent a significant expense and portion of our levies. To ensure we run the estate as cost effectively as possible, please remember: - Please always place rubbish bags inside rubbish bins to prevent animals from tearing the bags open and creating a mess. The bins are emptied regularly. - Please don t flush foreign objects down the loo as it damages the sewage pumps. - Please use the constructed footpaths and don t walk across the veld unnecessarily. The veld struggles to recover from damage because of the drought and there are snakes to be aware of. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Annual General Meeting, of which you will receive notice as normal. Kind regards, Bennie Gouws
-2- ACTIVITIES IN CAPE ST MARTIN We were so positive to find water by using the Wellpoint method, but unfortunately after 7 attempts we gave up!
-3- SURROUNDINGS AND THE OCEAN AROUND CAPE ST MARTIN Haleric shipwreck Interesting enough is that all the names on the walls of the closes in Cape St Martin are actually named after shipwrecks in the vicinity. I would like to start with the Haleric shipwreck (Haleric is the close at the far end of the road on the right hand side). British steamer of 5 169 tons, built in 1918 by Palmers & Co. Newcastle, owned by the Bank Line, managed by Andrew Weir, and commanded by Capt Mann. Sank 4km south west of Cape St Martin lighthouse on 5 April 1933 after striking Cape St Martin in fog while on a voyage from England to Australia in ballast to load wheat. Source : Cape Argus, 5,6 April 1933 (photographs) Lloyds Register of Shipping 1932-33. It has been SNAKE time! After spotting two Cape Cobra s (one in the veld next to our house and one in our garden) we had a mole snake as a thirsty visitor in the garden. After he satisfied his thirst he went back into the veld. We would like to take this opportunity to warn all of you to avoid walking through the veld, if a Cape Cobra bites someone; the patient have only 20 minutes to get medical help to save your life. As we all know the nearest hospital is indeed a 30 minutes drive from Cape St Martin. Please pass on this friendly warning to your servants as well.
Good spotting! We are very excited! It s the first time that we have spotted this guy in the garden! Pin tailed whydah
-5- WEATHER CONDITIONS We had the best weather ever during the Festive Season! On the 30 th of December 2017 we counted 62 persons on the beach, the most people we have even seen on Britannia Bay s beach. We had 9mm of rain since our last newsletter. The gardens and surroundings are busy taking strain under the harsh conditions but we need to stay positive for a better rainy season to come. Sunrise on the 1 st of April 2018 is at 6h59am and sunset at 18h45pm.
