The Ottawa Remote Control Club Newsletter Hello everyone, Welcome to the June 2009 TOPCAP. This is the last one until September, which will give our editor a chance to concentrate on his flying for the summer! (Thanks Mark, for all your efforts.) With the summer ahead of us we have lots to look forward to. There will be lots of events for people who are interested. There will be one or even two events going on at the ORCC Glider field each month of the summer, and that is on top of different events each month at the ORCC Drummond field. ORCC members are also encouraged to attend events at the other clubs in the area. Meet some of the other modelers and see their airplanes flying. Are you the shy type? Volunteer your services for an hour at the impound, registration, or whatever, and that will give you an excuse to talk to people! It is going to be a good summer. As always, the club will require the services of people to help with the lawn mowing and other tasks that need to be done. Thank you in advance for whatever help you can give, be it a lot or even a little. And finally, when you are flying, please fly safely and please mind all the safety rules. So have a safe and enjoyable summer. See you at the flying field! Mike Toner, ORCC president

Safety Notice to all ORCC members On May 31 2009 a safety audit of the ORCC Drummond Field was conducted by Claude Melbourne, who is vice President of MAAC as well as our Zone Director. The basic layout of the field was found to be in compliance with the MAAC safety code. However, the presence of bulldozers or other vehicles (either in use or parked) on the active side of the flight line was found to be a safety concern. Flying operations can continue at ORCC Drummond field with the following additional restrictions. As of this date, these restrictions are part of the ORCC club safety rules and all pilots must abide by them. 1) The airspace beyond the fence at the western end of the runway is a no-fly zone. Airplanes taking off are to turn north before reaching the fence. Airplanes coming in to land are to establish their base leg and turn onto final approach closer in than the fence. Pilots are to avoid flying over the earthen mound at the western end of the field. 2) Pilots are to make a good-willed reasonable effort to avoid flying their airplanes over Moodie Drive. 3) When bulldozers, trucks, excavators or other vehicles are parked or in operation on the active side of the flight line, pilots are to keep their airplanes well away from them. MAAC insurance will not cover any liability for property damage or personal injury with regards to these vehicles because pilots know they are there before flying their airplanes, and pilots are breaking the safety rules by flying near them. 4) The safety rules regarding the flight line 21 feet from the pilot station are already well established in the safety code. These safety rules are to be more stringently enforced by the ORCC. Pilots who violate the flight line will be first given a verbal or written warning. Depending on the individual situation, this might escalate into the offender having to take maybe one or perhaps several flights on a buddy box with a trainer before being allowed to fly his own airplanes again. These restrictions shall remain in effect until further notice. Note: With regards to the vehicles on the active side of the flight line, ORCC has spoken with Drummond management and we have requested that all vehicles and equipment be parked at least 100 feet behind the flight line when not in use. Last one to leave Drummond Field please lock the gate behind you We have been having some problems with the outer gate at Drummond Field being left unlocked when it shouldn't be. If you are the last to leave Drummond field and the Greely garden center has closed off their access, and Drummond is not excavating, then please lock the outer gate. We started out on good terms with Greely, and we wish to help Greely avoid any security problems. So the outer gate should be locked when Drummond, Greely, and ORCC are not present. 2

The 2 nd annual Ottawa IMAC Contest is right around the corner. The contest will be held at the ORCC Drummond field and will be a two day event that involves judged aerobatic flying by pilots of all skill levels. 17 pilots have already pre-registered, and more are on the way. Even if you don t plan on flying in the contest, we still need your help. Volunteers will be needed to run the flight lines, scribe for judges, enter scores and assist with lunch. If you re interested in helping out, please contact Tom Hastie (tom.hastie@gmail.com) and Dave Rees (dave_rees@hotmail.com) and let us know which day you can be available. If you ve always wondered what an IMAC event was but didn t want to compete, volunteering is a great way to learn more. All sizes of models will be represented, from small electric all the way to 40% scale aircraft. The morning pilot meeting is at 0830 Saturday morning. Flying will start at 0900 and continue until approximately 3:00pm. Spectators are invited to a 3D aerobatic demonstration in the early afternoon after contest flying has concluded on Sunday. Unfortunately, due to airspace concerns, during the event, only contest flying will be permitted. See you June 13 th! - 3 -

Hello Everyone, It is exciting to know that one of the biggest events of ORCC the IMAC event - is just around the corner. With the same anticipation, it is also exciting to announce that the ORCC will be hosting its first Night Flying event ever. After enjoying a successful Night Flying event at the Rideau R/C Flyers field last year, a seed was planted. That night, I enjoyed watching how those little RC gems illuminated the sky creating such a fascinating atmosphere. I couldn t resist the temptation of asking the exec members if we could host such an event at our club. They did please me. The idea resonated on people s heads. Later on, a day was offered by the dynamic duo (Tom/Dave), and the Night Flying event was set to be held on June 13 th to further celebrate the 2 days IMAC contest. Even though this event promises to be lots of fun, (and who knows what that night might bring; maybe some improvised music by those campers from IMAC), we need to understand we have to adhere to stricter rules for flying that night. Therefore: Only self illuminated, electric powered and slow park flyer planes and/or helicopters will be allowed at the field High performance airplanes will not be permitted. You will need an aircraft that is illuminated such that its outline can easily be seen at all attitudes. Blinking lights will not be allowed as the main method of illumination. (However some secondary blinking lights will be allowed). The event director (that s me) has the right to refuse any aircraft that is not adequate for the event. During the first part of the evening all pilots will be required to pass a flight test for their night flying wings. MAAC or AMA registration required. The landing fee will be $5 and will include some refreshments (coffee/hot chocolate). Flying will start approximately at 9-9:30pm. Pilots briefing will start at ~8:30pm. To end, we also need your help.. If you have a power generator (of the quiet type), 12V-110V high power inverters and/or working lights (>200W) that you can please lend for the night, please contact me. We hope to see you there! Cheers Ernesto Benedito - 4 -

This is the final Topcap until September. There are no monthly club meetings until Sept 1, but there are plenty of other events going on at the field all summer. Training nights will also continue during the summer on Wednesday nights. I am going out of town next week, so I ve pushed up the delivery date for Topcap this month. Thanks to all the contributors who sent in their submissions early. Have a great summer, and see you at the field! - 5 -
