Vol. XXXVI No. 6 June, 2008 Edition President s Message Rob Cruz Well...it's June already and the Best of the Bay (Bob) ride is here. Our third annual Bob will be held on June 21. The route is based on stage two of the first Amgen Tour of California. Plenty of climbs and great food, the Bob will satisfy those who love a beautiful, challenging ride. Go to cherrycitycyclists.org and click on the Bob link for more details. Summer is around the corner and we've already had our first heat wave. I hope everyone is staying hydrated and slapping the sunscreen on to stay safe because it was hot. Remember to ride smart and carry plenty of fluid or be prepared to pick some up on your ride. Water alone in that heat can't sustain you so include electrolytes in your choices. The club is honing in on our annual picnic date and location as well as the Christmas dinner. Details to come. Remember to fun on your bike! See you on the road...or the trails! BOB Social in Sunol Park Join us for the Best of the Best Social on Saturday, June 7. All volunteers and riders who would like to register are invited to come and join the fun. Coffee will be served 8-8:30 a.m., go on a ride, meet the other volunteers or hang out and enjoy the sun. See the ride schedule for times. At around noon when the riders return, get a taste of BOB. It s our way of saying thank you a head of time for making this event happen. It s also an opportunity to give out information and answer any questions you might have. Don t forget Best of the Bay, Saturday June 21. Register at Active.com To volunteer.contact. Vicky Ma 510 813-6690 or Cheryl Hopkins 510 701-9034 or gchopkins@comcast.net A Balloon Festival & Bike Ride Experience the Hot Air Balloon Festival on June 28 th or June 29 th and include a CCC Bike Ride and make it a get away in the wine country of the Alexander Valley north of Santa Rosa. You can rendezvous for one or multiple days. The hub is at the WorldMark Windsor Resort in Windsor June 26-June 30 where some of us will be staying. Though the rides are staged (see ride descriptions) this is a fluid event where there are options to shorten a route, lots of alternates to extend and a facility to enjoy. For our viewing pleasure, the balloons are scheduled to launch each morning at 6:30 a.m. from Keiser Park 700 Windsor River Road. If you would like to do this together, call for the resort room number. We ll be leaving from WorldMark at 6 a.m. to see about 30 balloons slated to launch. There will be a group leaving from WorldMark to go to the event on Saturday and Sunday at the same time. The park is close by. Some will ride to the park while others will drive or even walk. There is a bike ride scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday from Café Noto and Sunday from WorldMark. We ll be entertained by a lot of activities this time of the year in and around the vineyards, ride and experience as much of it as you like. You can pick a day of rest, relaxation, hang by the pool, read a book, visit the area and how can one pass up a visit to a local winery (ies?). There will be 1

a wine/cheese potluck dinner on Saturday, the 28 th. You can drop off your dishes at the resort in the morning. If you would like to use the pool or hot tub during the day or after the ride, bring your own towels and toiletries. You can also arrange to shower and if needed use the refrigerator. Thursday, June 26 is a century from SF to Windsor. Please make arrangements for your transportation back. You need to self sufficient. There will be places on the route to refuel. Make sure you carry at least two bottles of water, food, $, tubes and a pump. Contact Vicky for a possible carpool. It also is designed so that ride leaders may evaluate and grade their rides. Ride leaders must be fair in rating their rides and must ride at the pace that they submit. Riders should not show up for a ride that they are not capable of doing, at the advertised pace. Note: The average speed for a ride does not include time off of the bike at rest stops or for regrouping. So a T ride may not finish a 30-mile ride in about 3 hours. All rides are No Drop which means we will not leave riders behind, or that we will wait ahead and regroup, for every rider. (Unless a ride is listed as a non no drop ride) A rider may ride faster than the advertised pace but he/she should realize that they will spend more time waiting to re-group. Show up and be ready to ride, at the listed ride time. Rides leave no later than 10 minutes after the listed starting time Check the website frequently for updates, events and new info www.cherrycitycyclists.org. Cherry City Cyclist Bike Club realizes the importance of wearing a bike helmet and strongly encourages all riders to wear a helmet. 1 Hills of short duration, some moderately steep 2 - Generally hilly terrain, some short steep climbs & descents 3 Long climbs, some steep climbs & descents 4 Long steep climbs, blazing descents: For experienced riders May Ride Leaders Thank YOU! The ride begins at 6:00 pm sharp! Contact Eva Fallis at emfallis82@yahoo.com Saturday June 21: Best Of the Bay Century On June 21, 2008 we will once again provide a special ride designed just for a limited number of advanced riders: very challenging, but you will find it outstanding and well worth the effort. To sign up, go to our ACTIVE.COM and look for BEST OF THE BAY. Our BEST OF THE BAY ride is a world-class Super- Century ride. You would have to travel to the Sierras or beyond to find an equally great route, yet here is one you can BART to! On this ride you will enjoy lots of panoramic bay views, miles of pastoral and forested hills, even deep, cool redwood forests. And this route has only a few city miles and you will see little vehicle traffic on these roads. Cherry City Cyclists will provide you with lots of sag support, carefully selected beautiful rest stops and food appropriate for this type of ride, and you finish at a restaurant buffet of pastas, soups, salads, desserts and much more. We think that this route is the most beautiful and MOST CHALLENGING contiguous 100+ miles in the urban San Francisco Bay Area. There are ten long difficult climbs and thrilling / dangerous descents, culminating with the (optional) CAT 1 climb up the infamous Sierra Road. The BOB ride is strictly limited to a maximum of 150 advanced riders - because of the constraints of using BART, and so we can provide the high level of support needed for such an advanced ride. We expect the ride to reach capacity very quickly, thanks to the great reviews from all of last year's riders, so register early to be sure of being one of the BEST OF THE BAY riders. You should only sign up for BOB if you are already riding at least 100 miles per week, including lots of big hills. If so, you will be able to really enjoy this wonderful but very challenging route. Tuesday, July 1?/?/? Can t Get Enough? Ride begins at 9 am from the WorldMark Windsor Resort. Bring water and money for food. See June 27 for driving directions. For type of ride.. Saturday July 12 22/S/62 Windmill Century This amazing century (metric or full) winds through the vineyards and valleys of northern Santa Barbara County. It starts at the Los Alamos County Park in Los Alamos, CA. Los Alamos is located off Hwy 101 about 280 miles south of San Francisco (a 5 hour drive) and 36 miles north of Solvang. Los Alamos is a very small town and has no hotels, so we stay at a great place (Best Western Big America) in Santa Maria (18 miles to the north). Santa Maria is a much larger city with lots of lodging and eating choices; including a great steakhouse (Shaw's Famous Steak House). will be staying at the Best Western Big America in Santa Maria. They are very reasonable, have spacious rooms, hot tub, pool, and a restaurant next door which is open early enough to get breakfast before driving to Los Alamos to start the ride. Hope to see you there! - Michael Lynch, 510-209-0386. Rob Cruz Vice President Secretary: Club Officers President 510-888-1691 guitarjedi@aol.com Steve Yoder 510-357-3045 steve@zlcsoftware.com Shelley Hinch 510-209-4547 shuzzie53@aol.com Most riders do not believe me when I tell them that the majority of the metric route is downhill, but I assure you it is very true. You start out from the park and, after some flats, begin some rolling hills for a few miles on Alisos Canyon Road and Foxen Canyon Road (be on the lookout for the windmills). Then it is downhill for miles into a beautiful valley with little to no traffic. The road conditions are immaculate and the scenery is spectacular. After the first rest stop, there is more downhill to come until you reach the second climb which is Telephone Road. It really is not much of a climb, just rollers for 4 miles. Then a right turn and MORE DOWNHILL into Santa Maria for a fully stocked lunch stop in Pioneer Park. Treasurer: Members at Large: Club Mileage: Sue Stewart 510-5382673 susanstewart@sbcglobal.net Gil Hopkins Susie Bump Mike Lynch 510-889-0952 lynchmf1@comcast.net The route then continues on a counter-clockwise swing through the county and back to Los Alamos. According to the elevation map, this part is slightly uphill, however you would not know it due to the tailwinds which continue to push you on at 20+ MPH. There is also a stretch on HWY 135 which is incredibly fast and, again, is downhill. You really have to experience this course. I have never seen anything like it. It is very much worth the time to travel to Los Alamos to do this one. Register now as the ride is limited to 500 riders. Route information, directions, registration, and everything you need to know is located on the Tailwinds Bike Club web site athttp://www.tailwindsbc.org/windmill/default.htm. Did I mention that after the ride they serve you top sirloin or chicken BBQ? Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or wish to meet us for dinner at Shaw's Steak House the evening before the ride.
