Classical Greece Golden Age the height of a civilization s intellectual accomplishment and economic productivity

Athens before Pericles Athens had just lost a 9 year battle with Sparta. The people lost confidence in the democratic system of government & began to question their values. In this time of uncertainty, several great thinkers appeared. The Greeks called them Philosophers which means lovers of wisdom.

Perfection and Balance in Philosophy

Socrates Socratic Questioning allows student to arrive at own conclusions by asking questions! He would ask students a series of leading questions to show that people hold many contradictory opinions. Socrates had a goal of realizing perfect and ethical human behavior and teaching that to his students.

Socrates on Trial Charged with corrupting the youth and neglecting the cities gods. The outcome of the trial was voted on (what city was the trial likely in??) The verdict???? Death by drinking hemlocka slow acting poison

Plato A student of Socrates denounced democracy because of the death of Socrates left Greece after Socrates death. Wrote The Republic- were he set forth his vision of a perfectly governed society. A philosopher king Established first institution of higher learning called the Academy, in 387 BCE.

Aristotle A student at Plato s Academy Tutored Alexander the Great (Macedonian King) Perfect human path = moderation golden mean desirable goal between two extremes (one being excess the other being deficiency)

Perfection and Balance in Architecture

Greeks were the first to use advanced math to construct Columns & Arches for their buildings.

Pericles (ruler of Athens during the Golden Age), goal was to have the greatest artists and architects, create magnificent sculptures and buildings, to glorify Athens. He had them build Temples dedicated to gods and goddesses

Parthenon- built to honor Athena. The goddess of wisdom & protector of Athens.

part of Parthenon frieze (marble sculpture at the top of the Parthenon)

Acropolis fortress of Athens

Athens Agora central spot or gathering place

Temple of Aphrodisias (Aphrodite Goddess of Love)

Perfection and Balance in Art

Pre-Classical Greek statue

idealism state of perfection

Ideal, Not Real

Perfection and Balance in History

Herodotus Father of History first to treat historical subjects as a method of investigation He wrote with objectivity eliminating bias or favoritism reported on Greco-Persian Wars Gather multiple sources and write a narrative FYI 300 was about the Battle of Thermopylae during the Persian Wars. This was also where the battle of Marathon happened. A soldier ran 25 miles to announce the Athenians defeat of the Persians in the battle.

Peloponnesian Wars Sparta and Athens will go to war with each other in the Peloponnesian Wars fought between 431-404 BCE. These wars were about battle for dominance of Southern Greece. Even though technically Sparta won, it severely damaged both city-states. Because of this and their defeats by the Persians, thisbled them to bevulnerable to invasion from other groups

Perfection and Balance in Theatre

drama [based on popular myth] ie. Hercules (goal to become a god perfection perfection) ie. Oedipus (sleeps with mother and disturbs perfect bloodline) tragedy comedy voice amplification and anonymity
