The Caravaner Welcome to Live Oak! Hosted by the Drifters Tucalota Springs RV Park entertained our April Caravan with gorgeous weather and continuous birdsong. Backscratchers Mona and Byron Shaner set up the host tent on Tuesday with much additional support Thanks you to all of you very special helpers. 54 rigs arrived to enjoy potlucks, games, washer toss, a hay ride, many raffle prizes and local wine tasting. The General Meeting was held under the beautiful big oak trees and welcomed three first-timers. One of them, Andrea Eagles won the Washer Toss Tournament with Joe Fletcher. How wonderful to experience such a cooperative and positive attitude among our Caravaners. Thank You Backscratchers Lazy Daze Caravaner 1

FIRE EXITS REVISITED Your Lazy Daze Safety Team has requested that the following article be reprinted in order to provide the information to new members, to members who may have missed it earlier, and as a reminder to those who have read it before. FIRE EXITS IN YOUR LAZY DAZE BOB SCHMAHL, SAFETY TEAM MEMBER One of the great things about traveling and camping in our Lazy Daze motorhomes is that we can enjoy a fun, carefree activity while we leave our worries on the doorstep at home. Well.most of them anyway. We do need to bring with us concern for and an awareness of our own personal safety. Hopefully, this article will encourage and inspire you to consider potential fire emergencies that could occur in your rig, and to develop a plan for escape if a fire should occur. Prevention is the first step in the protection against an accidental fire so it is a good policy to evaluate your fire safety on a regular basis. Try to identify locations where a fire might be likely to start. Perhaps you could begin at the front and work your way to the rear determining how you would exit if a fire were to occur in any of the identified locations. Engine compartment, cab area, electrical appliances, stove-top, oven, refrigerator, converter/charger, inverter, and fans are items or locations that come quickly to mind. As you inspect the interior of your rig and its contents, you will note that most items are made of combustible materials such as wood, paper or fabric. Ensure that any potential source of ignition is eliminated. For example, frayed wiring or extension cords should be repaired or replaced, smoking should not be done inside the rig, and the stove-top area should be free of combustible materials while cooking. These points are mentioned here as reminders because even though you may know them, it is easy to become complacent and let down your guard. That s when an accident may occur. When a fire occurs in any recreational vehicle, it is typically a fast moving fire. Do not hesitate in exiting the vehicle and do not re-enter to retrieve anything once you have made your exit. The two front cab doors and the RV entry door are the primary exits. Rigs equipped with a cab-over bed have a hatch that provides access to the roof. A red locking latch and an EXIT decal are installed on one of the large windows in your rig designating it as an emergency exit in order to comply with safety code requirements. You should be aware that any other large window in your rig that is designed to slide open will also serve as an emergency exit. The locking latch on these windows should be maintained in good working order so that any occupant can easily operate them. All occupants should know how to: unlock the window, slide it open, remove the screen, and exit the window even in the dark! With that thought in mind, make sure your smoke detector/alarm has a fresh battery and operates properly so that you can get an early start for the exit in the event of a night-time fire emergency. There is a great deal more that can be said about fire and life safety but that is material for future safety articles. Let me end this article with a reminder to make sure your fire extinguisher(s) is/are in good operating condition, and that you and all occupants of your Lazy Daze know where to obtain an extinguisher and how to operate it. Terry s Tech Talk Tech Talk Article 75 Desk Replacement for a Barrel Chair 05/2013 After eleven years of moving my laptop off the dinette table whenever I needed the table for other activities, I decided to install a small desk where the forward barrel chair was located in my 2001 Lazy Daze 27 foot Rear Bath. I used two 2 x 4 studs to support the forward end of the desk plywood. The forward stud is screwed into the cab bulkhead and I was careful to countersink the screws just enough so they did not poke through the aluminum skin of the Lazy Daze. The passenger side stud is screwed into the wooden vertical frame members that are found by tapping the veneer and by looking for the small white rivet heads. The studs are attached even with the top of the bookcase as shown below: I found a 24 x 48 furniture grade piece of plywood at Home Depot for $20. I cut it 19 inches wide; cut the aft end to match the angle of the bookcase; cut a notch to accommodate the passenger side front seat; and drilled a large hole for power cords. I sanded, stained, and applied two coats of polyurethane to the plywood top.. I only screwed the plywood to the studs and the aft end just sits on the bookcase. The desk installation is easily reversed by simply removing screws. No damage is done to the bookcase. Now I have a spare barrel chair. The new desk works well. Techsnoz, the Tech Talk website. Goodwill Ambassador Report Two of our members recently spent some time in the hospital. Back Scratcher, VERONA McCUTCHEON #2727 spent three days due to an attack of colitis and Drifter PEGGY ZABEL #2861 due to a bad case of salmonella. She claims she took some probiotics past the expiration date. After her experience I think I will look at those expiration dates from a different angle. She says the full recovery time can take up to three months. Firesider, URSULA GRINDE #2003 is planning on her other knee replacement on April 24th. Roadrunner JESS HONEYWELL #2245 who has been missing from our caravans the last several years due health issues. He is now in a rehab center but you could send him a cheer-him-up card to his home address at 9684 Rose Avenue, Fountain Valley, CA 92708-2325. Mona Shaner MonaL@sbcglobal.net Dear Mona and all our Lazy Daze friends, Please forgive me for taking so long to extend my thanks for your card. As I think you are aware Dottie was a wonderful woman and a fine wife. Needless to say I miss her greatly, but I will always love her and I have for over 50 years. At this time things are pretty much up in the air in regard to my returning to a campout. Both Dottie and I were away for a long time and the poor old Lazy Daze developed a number of problems which now have been fixed. I will have to get a new license as mine had expired. At present time I am living in an assisted living facility known as the High Desert Haven, it is only about a mile down the hill from our house on Smoke Tree Avenue and the people are wonderful. You will see the address on the envelope. Thank you again and my best to everyone. Gordon 2320 Gordon s new address is: 1240 College Heights Blvd., Room 108 Ridgecrest, CA 93555 Live Oak BBQ On Saturday, May 18th, Lazy Dazer s are having a BBQ! Cost: RECHARGE-$10.00 NEW ABC EXTINGUISHER--$60.00 Time: 8:45-9:30am Drop them off on the way to the Craft Fair and pay at that time. Demo: 11:00 Dan will probably have the demo at the large fire ring. The demonstration is very valuable to all of us. It will give us an opportunity to try out a fire extinguisher first hand.
