GOOD LIFE NEWS FROM OUR PRESIDENT I hope you are enjoying your Airstream this summer and having lots of fun adventures. I would like to bring to your attention some of the topics that we are going to discuss in the October Annual Meeting at the Mary s Fish Camp Rally in October. I am doing this to give our club members time to submit topics of interest that they would like to discuss at the meeting and to give everyone time to respond prior to the meeting on some requests listed below. The Annual meeting will be held on Saturday October 20, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Mike and Maryanne Swegles have arranged for us to use the meeting room at their condo community. The meeting address is; Clubhouse 6685 River Run Blvd., Weeki Wachee, FL 34607. The Swegles have also volunteered to provide lunch for us directly following the meeting. If anyone is interested in helping them, please contact Mike & Maryanne directly at; mswegles@icloud.com. One of the things we are going to talk about at the meeting is our community charity. We have been successful collecting donations for the Fisher House with our various fundraising efforts. Thank you to everyone that participated. We have heard that some folks would like to discuss supporting a new charity for 2019. If you have a suggestion for a new charity we Florida Airstream Club Rally and VAC Region 3 Southeast Rally The Florida Airstream Club and Vintage Airstream Club joint rally was very successful in spite of the weather. We had 23 rigs including 11 Vintage trailers with 40 attendees. There was plenty to see in the area and the education session on Friday was well attended. The campsite hosted the Saturday dinner, which everyone really enjoyed and there were door prizes at every meal. The Vintage open house was held on Saturday and eight vintage airstreams participated in the Best in Rally competition. Linda and I were honored to have our 66 Globe Trotter selected. Special thanks to Mike Swegles and Brad McGloin for serving as the judges. We were able to use the Vintage Airstream Club s notification alerting system prior to and during the rally. This provided the opportunity for attendees to receive text messages for schedule changes as well as weather alerts and there were plenty of weather alerts! We would like to thank Mike and Maryanne Swegles and Jeff and Mary Krabel for their help in hosting this rally. Without them, it would not have been such a success. Safe travels and see you down the road. Larry Scovatto PAGE 1

would like to hear from you. Send your suggestion to my attention at ronchrisallen@bellsouth.net. Simply let us know the name of the organization you would like to submit, why you selected them, and how they benefit the recipients/ community. The write up should be about 50 words or less. We are requesting your ideas in advance so that we can present this information to our members to help with their knowledge of the organization and to help them pick the charity that fits best with our club. All submissions received prior to October 10, 2018 will be presented at the meeting and opened for discussion and vote. All submissions received after the deadline will be held for the following year. This request is being made so that research can be done prior to the meeting and to keep our meeting on track since time is limited. Another topic that is scheduled for discussion on the Agenda is the club continuing to pay for club members rally fees to help use excess funds in the treasury. Think about the pros and cons. Do we continue paying not only for full members but affiliate members? How low do we want to bring our Treasury balance before we discontinue this practice? Etc.Buddy Rallies are another topic that several members have asked about. I believe the rule is that as a club we can hold two Buddy Rallies a year. Let s take advantage of this rally option so that we can invite friends who are not Airstream owners to our rallies to introduce them to the Airstream Life. If you want to host a Buddy Rally please let Lynn Behnke know right away at email; lmbehnke4@gmail.com. The Rally Committee for 2019 would like to get all rallies on the schedule prior to the Annual Meeting. To make the club run smoothly it takes all of our members. Your Executive Board appreciates any feedback, suggestions and assistance. It s your club! Let your Executive Board know how they can support your ideas and suggestions. Ron Allen FISHER HOUSE DONATION UPDATE Following is an update on our Club s Community Fund Raising for the Fisher House. The Fisher House, a home away from home for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers is the selected Community Fundraising Project for the Florida Airstream Club #027. At the December Rally at Fort Christmas we continued selling RV stickers available to place on your beverage cups, cell phone covers, vehicle windows, etc. We also sold raffle tickets for a drawing for a cork hot plate made and donated by Jeff Krabel. With sticker sales and raffle tickets we received $128. Jeff also continues to make and sell Joker sets with 100% of the proceeds going to the Fisher House. Thank you Jeff for using your talents to help those in need who stay at the Fisher House facilities.during the April Caravan we again sold RV Stickers along with receiving a cash donation from George & Pam Millis. Thank you George & Pam for your thoughtful donation. Total received for the Caravan was $56.56. Donations collected at the April Region 3 Rally for stickers sales was $90. Our May Rally in Daytona Beach brought in $39 from the sale of RV stickers. Thank you Larry & Linda Scovotto for making the stickers available at your Rally. With all our donations our new grand total is $1,635.56. We appreciate all the folks that purchased stickers, raffle tickets, jokers sets and who made cash donations to our fund raising events. Your willingness to help others is greatly appreciated. Our goal is to send a check to the Fisher House after our October Rally and Annual Meeting. Let s continue to show support. Do you have a fundraising idea? Email Chris Allen at ronchrisallen@bellsouth.net or call (904) 534-9896. I would love to hear from you. Chris Allen PAGE 2

AMARILLO RV MUSEUM If your Airstream wanderings take you near Amarillo, Texas, don t miss the Jack Sizemore Traveland Museum. Many years ago an Amarillo resident, Jack Sizemore caught the RV bug. He bought a few motor homes to rent out to those wanting to try the RV lifestyle without having to purchase one. Then after he started his RV dealership.he started collecting older recreational vehicles of all sorts, from motor homes to tents and trailers (and quite a few Harley motorcycles too). Realizing his collection was getting quite large, he decided to create a museum. Now this fun and interesting museum is open to the public in a warehouse behind his family RV dealership. Most of the displays have information placards accompanied by camping memorabilia appropriate for the time period. The whole museum is free and takes less than an hour to view and is well worth the time. You can check out the latest Airstreams at the dealership while you are there. The museum displays several Airstreams of varying ages, which of course were of interest to us. Their 1935 Torpedo Airstream was owned by the Holman family for 81 years and is recognized by Airstream as the world s oldest Airstream. It was home built by Dr. Holman and his wife shortly after he complete medical school from $5 plans as seen in a Popular Mechanics magazine ad. The plans were provided by Wally Byam. The 1962 Bambi in the museum needed only partial restoration. The stove, refrigerator and bathroom of the shiny 1955 Airstream have never been used. A 1976 Argosy was repainted and its stripes changed to red and blue to honor veterans. There are many other RVs in the museum including the actual motor home used in the Robin Williams 2006 movie, RV. While you are in the area, don t miss the madcap sculpture of Cadillac Ranch, a field where 10 Cadillacs are buried nose-down, tail fins up. Graffiti is encouraged and the smell of fresh paint is in the air. Only in America! Lyn Masters Jack Sizemore and his business partners went on to form the Keystone Corporation that became the largest RV producer in the industry. His Amarillo museum is a good reminder of all the pleasant family memories made in days gone by in these charming old recreational vehicles. PAGE 8

Hello, we are those Paddling Poole s, David and Susan. We go streaming to provide the dog a place to stay while we paddle. He likes to go but doesn t paddle. I love a good story. Sometime around a camp fire with a good beverage I d be happy to tell a few tales. Some do not require much exaggeration. Truth is often more of a story than fiction. Right now we are on an extended paddle, reunion, burial, wedding, birthday, and anniversary trip. OK, it is a busy trip. This leg is to the mountains to a mountain wedding a mile down a 4x4 road/driveway. The Airstream stays at a real camp ground nearby. Hope you can join us in February at the Suwannee River Rendezvous RV Park. It is a special place we haven t found in other places. Like many country folk they are somewhat out there away from the city. So they invent their own fun. Just how many RV parks offer homing pigeon races or chicken poo bingo? Sunshine Committee Report Gary Mahan and Dianne were planning on attending our International Convention in Oregon and continuing to Alaska but Gary developed an infection and was hospitalized for treatment. He had an infection that entered the blood stream so he was treated with interjections of antibiotic every eight hours. Now he has been cleared by his doctors and is feeling well and ready to travel again. Marilyn Blasdell has completed her PT treatments for broken bones and is now walking on her own without assistance. She has been approved to start prolia shots for her osteoporosis this week. She is hoping to stop by our September rally to see everyone. Dave Wenger has been doing well with his treatments for melanoma. For 3 months he has taken biweekly immunotherapy without side effects, but presently he has been experiencing diarrhea and has been given a steroid which is causing his foot to heal more slowly. He is trusting that he will be able to continue his treatments for the full 2 years that his oncologists has prescribed. Frank Carson had another operation on his shoulder June 25, 2018. They will be chiseling the bone off the top of his shoulder and removing another piece of his collar bone. Your cards would be appreciated for this long-time fellow Airstreamer. Please send to his home address in New Jersey. Patsy Barr says she is getting there. Her surgeon says she is healing ahead of the curve after double knee surgery, but she is still experiencing knee joint pain after three months. She has completed her PT rehab, but finds that the mental healing takes time also. David has been cooking 3 meals a day for them without complaint! What a trooper!! We have other members who are ill, on chemotherapy, or undergoing radiation treatments. All are trying to recover as soon as possible. Please remember to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Please let your Sunshine Committee Chair, Betty Wenger (407-921-0658) or davewenger@hotmail.com know of anything you would like to be included in this column. 2018 Rally Schedule May 17 20 Joint Rally with Vintage Airstream Club; International RV Park; Daytona Beach, FL; Hosts: Scovotto s June 23 30 International Rally; Salem, OR September 13 16 Club Rally; Great Outdoors; Titusville, FL; Hosts: Hargett s October 18 21 Annual Meeting & Club Rally; Mary s Fish Camp; Weeki Wachee/Bayport, FL; Hosts: Alen s and Krabel s November 8 11 Cedar Key Joint Rally Sunset Isles RV Resort, Cedar Key Hosts; Swegles, & Meistrell November 28 December 2 Club Rally; Cracker Christmas; Ft.
