From 2013 to 2017 the energy sector experienced unprecedented growth, the highest in the history of the country. 18 Hydroelectric power plants were put into service. The Ministry of Energy has already planned affordable projects for additional hydroelectric power plants. RENEWABLE ENERGY In the winter, when the volume of generators decreases, Georgia mostly depends on thermal power plants. Local production creates new opportunities for renewable energy. New opportunities for renewable energy were created through the opening of Kartli 1, the first wind farm near Gori, Georgia. The wind farm was opened in October 2016 and has a capacity of 20.7 MW. TRANSIT Georgia, being in the centre of the Caucasus region, has the best geopolitical location in order to become an international industrial center for the region. Georgia is the first country in the region where such lines have been installed these provide a stable exchange of electricity and strengthen Georgia s potential to become a transit medium from Turkey to Russia and Azerbaijan. THE ENERGY SECTOR IS THE MAIN DRIVING INVESTMENT SECTOR OF THE GEORGIAN ECONOMY According to direct foreign investments, the energy sector is one of the first and foremost in terms of investment volume. Direct foreign investments attracted by the energy sector during the past five years amounted to 947.1 million US dollars.
