We saw a lot of beautiful country. I had always wanted to see Mt. Rushmore, and I finally got my wish. It did not disappoint me. Also the Crazy Horse monument is going to be really something when it is done. The truck show was awesome! Approximately 1300 trucks showed up for the event. It was difficult to see them all and give them the attention they deserved. I was impressed with the variety. There was something for everyone. It was nice to have these SoCal members in attendance. Mark and Diane Christensen, Bruce and Chris Caballero, Lee Haeberlein, and Adam Rossman. Adam is president of the San Diego chapter, and they had several members in attendance. My mornings were taken up helping out in spectator parking. Saturday was busy and then the rain began. Needless to say I was soaking wet by the end of my shift. On July 15, the SoCal and San Diego Chapter's had the pleasure of viewing Hal Hays collection of trucks here in Riverside. Hal has 50 beautifully restored trucks left over 60 truck lovers drooling. To top it off we were all invited to Hal's beautiful home for a barbecued rib lunch. It was a spectacular day for all who attended. Thank you, Hal, for allowing us to view your collection and for the awesome lunch. Also thanks to Adam Rossman for setting up the tour. Our annual picnic this year will be on September 9 in Forest Falls on Highway 38. We look forward to, another great event this year. Bring a side dish or dessert and the chapter will furnish the burgers and hotdogs. Please see the Event Calendar for particulars. If you have any ideas for future events, please let us know. The Old Iron Express Newsletter is published every two months by the Southern California Chapter of the American Truck Historical Society, a non profit organization. P.O. Box 109, Calimesa, CA 92320 Happy truckin', Dennis

MESSAGE FROM CHAPTER EVENT COORDINATOR 2017 EVENTS PAST EVENTS May 25-27 - ATHS National Convention Des Moines, IA Ken Lund The National ATHS Convention was held in Des Moines Iowa this year and was a complete success with over 1,280 trucks and trailers, (but I cannot say for certain that is the final number). This broke the previous record from the York, PA convention. There was an impressive delegation representing California including a fleet display provided by Dennis Chan of the Central California Chapter. It was great to reconnect to ATHS friends we usually only get to see at the Conventions. Barb and Steve Sackett and Sally Haase were checking in all the trucks at the registration point enduring cold temperatures and periodic thunderstorm showers. Barry Davis from the Alberta Canada Chapter was there to talk about Diamond Ts and trucks in general. The Iowa State Fairgrounds spans over 435 acres, and it was filled with trucks. Every corner you took, every alley you looked down, there were trucks that you hadn t seen before. As trucks left, we found ourselves wondering out loud, Where was that truck? I never saw that one! Check out www.aths.org for pictures and links to other pictures. The ATHS Facebook page (www.facebook.com/historicaltruck1971) also has lots of pictures of this fun convention. July 15 - Riverside Hal Hays Collection and BBQ Thank you to Adam Rossman of the San Diego Chapter for organizing this event and allowing SoCal Chapter members to tag along. And, of course, many thanks to Hal Hays for graciously inviting us to view and enjoy his collection of restored antique trucks in what he is developing as the Heritage Museum of restored antique trucks. These trucks hold a special place in Hal s personal history as many of them were trucks he encountered during his business career. After allowing us to thoroughly look over his collection of 30+ vehicles, Hal and his lovely wife Susie hosted a wonderful barbeque for San Diego and SoCal Chapters at his beautiful Spanish style home in Riverside. It was a wonderful event perfectly matched with beautiful old trucks and delicious BBQ! We hope to again see some of these trucks at future SoCal ATHS Truck shows as they are truly unique! Hal and Adam, thanks again! FUTURE EVENTS September 9th Picnic at Thurman Flats Picnic Area-Hwy 38 The annual Picnic/BBQ will be held at the Thurman Flats Picnic Area. We have reserved a covered shelter and have that area to ourselves. The SoCal Chapter will provide the parking pass, burgers, dogs, and drinks (possibly hand cranked ice cream, too!). We request participants to bring a side dish, dessert, or anything that will complement the menu. There is room to bring a classic vehicle, if you want. --Location: Hwy 38 below Mountain Home Village --RSVP: Mark Christensen 909-226-0795 or Diane Christensen 909-499-0043 Sunday October 8 Irwindale Speedway - Truckin for Kids Annual Show Depart Meeting Place 8:00 am. We have been invited to bring our trucks on the Sunday of the event. There are some activities on Saturday, but the main event show and drags are on Sunday. We have 12 entry passes and space to have a chapter booth and t-shirt sales. Contact us if you want to bring a truck and/or help at the chapter booth. Maybe even a grudge drag with another member s old iron?

Ken s Continued Meet nearby just north of the 210 freeway on Camino de la Cantera, at the Irwindale Exit. There is room to park and group the trucks. Arrive early and have breakfast at Farmer Boys or McDonalds We plan to depart @ 8:00 am for the speedway. --Speedway: 500 Speedway Dr, Irwindale/ Baldwin Park, 91706. Off 610 Fwy --RSVP : Ken Lund 909-790-7707 2017 ATHS National Convention Des Moines, IA. October 22 Vista San Diego Chapter Antique Truck Show 9:00 am Let s support the San Diego Chapter and attend their show held at the Tractor Museum in Vista. The show is in conjunction with their Fall Engine and Tractor Show, one of their major events. Enjoy the day looking at trucks and all of the great exhibits and displays, and maybe join in their afternoon parade of tractors, trucks, etc. --Some may want to meet in Temecula to caravan (maybe breakfast?) --Admission: $20.00/vehicle --Contact Adam Rossman 760-803-1034 --Location: Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum 2040 Santa Fe Ave, Vista, 92803 IDEAS FOR FUTURE EVENTS- Does anyone have any ideas of somewhere to go and something to see with our old trucks? In past years we took the old iron out on road trips, including a Ridge Route Run, Lake Mathews to Temecula, tour of Dalton Trucking, etc. The route should be friendly to older or slower vehicles. Maybe finish at a unique or special restaurant instead of BBQ? SoCal is a big place and there must be somewhere we can go within a reasonable distance from a central location. Call Ken Lund @ 909-790-7707 or one of the board members with your ideas of something new or maybe a suggestion of a repeat of an old favorite.
