Start: Finish: Total Distance: Black Buoy, Wivenhoe Crown, Ardleigh 6.3 miles Black Buoy, Wivenhoe to Spinnaker, Colchester Distance: 2.4 miles Turn right out of the Black Buoy, then left into East Street. After passing the chip shop on your right you will pass Rose Lane on your left - look up at the wall behind you to see the blue plaque which marks where actress Joan Hickson used to live. She moved there in 1958 and lived there 40 years until her death at age 92 in 1998. She is perhaps best known for playing Miss Marple in the TV series that ran from 1984-1992. Either go right into High Street and left into West Street or take the cut through if you can see it. Follow West Street to the Railway Station, then walk through the station car park to pick up the Wivenhoe Trail. When you reach the A134 in Colchester, cross the crossing, then turn left over the River Colne, then when you get to the roundabout cross safely to follow the road to the right. The Spinnaker will then be on your left. 1

Black Buoy, Wivenhoe to the Wivenhoe Trail Hythe Quay to the Spinnaker A Mills type marker post at the start of the Wivenhoe Trail. Now on National Cycle Route 51 this used to be part of the old route for route 1. 2

The Spinnaker to The Rover's Tye, Colchester Distance: 2.4 miles Turn left out of the Spinnaker and follow Hythe Quay to the mini-roundabout, then cross straight over into Hythe Station Road. Follow this road as it turns to the right over the River Colne, across the level crossing, past the back of Tesco until it meets Greenstead Road. Follow the path opposite (between 206 and 210, pictured below) which leads to a subway under the A133 St. Andrew's Avenue (pictured on the next page) when you come out of the subway turn so that the dual carriageway is on your left and follow the paths along St Andrew's Avenue, crossing Harwich Road (A137) then turning right after Waitrose into Ipswich Road (A1232). Stay on the right until after crossing the railway bridge, then cross over where there is a central area shortly before Upland Drive. Continue along Ipswich Road and you will reach the Rover's Tye on your left just before a roundabout (with Highwoods Approach). 3

Where the path between the houses reaches the A133 subway The Rovers Tye - main entrance is from the car park 4

The Rover's Tye, Colchester to Balkerne Gate, Ardleigh Distance: 0.9 miles Head back to Ipswich Road when leaving the Rover's Tye and turn left. Cross Highwoods Approach and continue along Ipswich Road. On your left before the self storage unit you will see the memorial to a Lancaster that crashed in 1944 (photograph on the next page) - a little further on to the right is Lancaster Approach, a new development with further road names in the development named after the crew members named on the memorial. After passing house number 584 there is a footpath on your left which marks the Colchester Borough/Ardleigh Parish (Tendring) boundary (see photograph on next page), which as you can see from the dashed line on the map to the left zig zags around a bit. After the path is Lion & Lamb Cottage, a pub in days of old., which is also pictured overleaf. Take the driveway to the Premier Inn to reach the Balkerne Gate rather than risk running down the grassy bank. 5

Balkerne Gate to Crown Inn Distance: 0.6 miles Take the drive out of the car park and, when safe, cross over. Turn left and carefully cross the slip road from the A120, over the A120, and the slip road to the A120, then turn right and follow the road to the left which is the Old Ipswich Road. The road passes a pond used for fishing to the left, which feeds into Ardleigh Reservoir on the right. Follow this road until you reach the Crown Inn. For after the Crown Inn check bus times - at the time of writing hourly bus Ipswich Buses 93/94 from opposite Balkerne Gate at about 16:50 goes back to Colchester Bus station. There is another at 18:16, but between times you'll need to walk about 15 to 20 minutes to reach an alternative bus service's route. 7

As noted earlier at the time of writing the hourly (on Saturday) 93/94 runs from by the Balkerne Gate back to the bus station near Colchester Town Railway station.
