Day 1 Arrive in Tokyo Arrive at Narita or Haneda International Airport. After clearing Customs, you ll be met by an English speaking guide and transported to the hotel by airport bus. It is approximately 90 minutes to your hotel in Tokyo from Narita, 30 minutes from Haneda Airport. Day 2 Tokyo City Tour You re in for a full day s tour of Tokyo: from bustling city center to grand Old Edo and the picturesque bay area, guaranteed to delight all your senses. Tokyo Downtown Route The huge Tokyo metropolis of 14 million has several downtowns, each with its own cultural feel, foods, shopping and activities to dazzle the senses. Tokyo Center West Tokyo s western hub bursts with vibrancy: clubbing, folk art, anime, fishing ponds, arts and science are but a small sampling. Old Edo and Tokyo Bay Edo stands in breathtaking contrast to Tokyo with its Bay Area location, outstanding sushi, beautiful gardens, and Imperial Palace sites from a bygone era.
Day 3 Matsumoto Castle Area A long, scenic train ride from Tokyo takes you to Matsumoto, a cosmopolitan city cradled in the stunning Japanese Alps. Today s sites offer an unparalleled, 180-degree contrast from samurai culture to contemporary art including : Matsumoto Castle Matsumoto City Museum of Art One of Japan s most controversial artists, Yayoi Kusama, was born in this city. Day 4 Exploring Magome on the Old Nakasendo Way Travel to the very heart of Japan on a short section of this Edo-era trail linking old, Imperial Kyoto to the high mountains of Nagano before turning east to Tokyo. Old Nakasendo Way Walk in the very footsteps of travelers, religious pilgrims, warriors, commoners and royalty with a knowledgeable guide who brings it all to life. Linking 69 post towns, the trail offers a rich history of poets, beautiful valleys and exquisitely preserved landmark towns along the way. Minshuku lodging and kaiseki dinner End your day with a memorable stay at a traditional inn, where you ll indulge in a fabulous feast of local delicacies.
Day 5 Exploring Tsumago on the Old Nakasendo Way Your travel through time continues on yet another section of the Old Nakasendo Way, Tsumago town. Tsumago With its spectacular backdrop of forested mountains, offers a delightful day of shrines, local crafts and confectionary treats in this historical post town. Stroll cobblestoned streets decorated with paper lanterns as you step back in time some 200 years. After a fulfilling day, we return to the minshuku for another relaxing evening and traditional feast. Day 6 Destination: Kyoto Enjoy a full breakfast at the minshuku before we depart the Nakasendo Way. You ll travel by bus, express train and shinkansen to our destination of Kyoto. Enjoy the scenery and food choices en-route as you catch your breath for a final, full day of site-seeing.
Day 7 Dazzling Kyoto: Three Options for Final Day For more than 1,000 years, Kyoto served as Japan s power centre, imbuing it with a rich history and beauty unsurpassed in the nation, Choose from one of three options available: Option 1: Kyoto Main Attractions Golden Pavilion This exquisite Zen temple with its luminous gold leaf facade, dates from the 1300s. Kiyomizudera Temple Featuring an imposing deck with spectacular view of Kyoto, this popular Buddhist temple dates from 780 AD. Gion Kyoto s most famous geisha district dazzles with craft shopping, dining and strolling historical streets packed with vibrant night-life. Option 2: Explore Arashiyama Area Sagano-Arashiyama This hilly region near Kyoto is spectacular for fall colors or cherry blossom viewing.
