NEWSBEAT The official publication of the Malta Model Aircraft Flying Association Website http://www.mmafa.eu Postal Address PO Box 22 Balzan BZN 1000 Issue 7/2010 August From the President Our Website The first thing I want to mention in this edition is our website. I hope that the majority of members have browsed our new site and associated links. I also want to encourage members who are building any sort of project to keep members updated by using the blogs section of the site. Apparently only myself and the Hon. Secretary have included some pics and comments come on, show us what you re doing!!! Indoor flying Another effort by Laurence Dalmas is being made to find a suitable venue for indoor flying. It is important, however that an approximate number of members interested is known beforehand. To this effect, all members wishing to join or are interested are to contact Laurence on 79475748 as soon as possible. Flying Activities the need for change Part 2 Firstly, I hope that all interested members have gone through what was said in my last Newsletter regarding the subject. It is a known fact that Standing Regulations are often unheeded by some members and the safety aspect is completely forgotten. This situation cannot go on, and although to date no serious incident has occurred, the time has come to better regulate our activities. I am therefore bringing the following again to the attention of all members. The committee will henceforth take a very serious view of any infringements. A large number of fliers execute a take off with the flier standing behind the model. THIS PRACTICE IS TO BE STOPPED. Fliers are therefore to start a take off procedure with the model on the right or left about 10 metres in front of them. The practice of the flier crossing the runway after taking off is to be 1

stopped at all costs. When the wind direction is NW/W fliers should proceed to the designated spot for flying by crossing the runway as near as possible to the boundary wall BEFORE TAKING OFF. NEVER FLY OVER THE PITS AREA Take frequency peg (35,41Mhz) when flying and return when finished Call your landings, take offs and runway crossings. Turbines and large engines (>30cc) start up AND SHUT DOWN outside pit area Respect the 15 minute slot for choppers Do not allow your children in the pit area Running in of engines in designated spot only Avoid flying over inhabited areas and farms Use an efficient silencer Do not be an egoist Exceptionallly, during the hot summer months, fliers may assemble and prepare their models for flight under the shade of the trees. STARTING UP AND SHUTTING DOWN OF ENGINES AND TAXIING MUST, HOWEVER, BE DONE IN THE PITS AREA ONLY THE COMMITTEE WILL HENCEFORTH BE CLOSELY MONITORING MEMBERS BE- HAVIOUR REGARDING THE ABOVE AND WILL TAKE DISCIPLINARY ACTION, IN- CLUDING REVOCATION OF MEMBERSHIP, IF A MEMBER PERSISTS IN BREAKING THESE AND OTHER STANDING REGULATIONS Forthcoming Events Next Saturday 21 August is Barbeque time. A reminder has been sent to all members via email. Bring your family, friends and whatever and enjoy the ever present evening breezes at Ta Qali On Saturday 16 September, our Calendar shows the holding of the John Earland Scale competition. The event will be held on similar lines of last year, with the addition of two op- 2

Scale Event In an effort to attract as many participants as possible, the committee has decided to stage this event in an unorthodox way, without any detailed judging, but with an emphasis on Scale and realism in flight. The following are the details of this event. Participation Paid up members can enter as many models as they wish as long as they represent a full size aircraft. Participants will declare whether the model/s were scratch built, plan built or pre-built (ARF). The models need not be owner built, but participants must produce a photograph or a three view plan of each model entered. The model/s must, however, be flown by the participant only. The three categories will carry the following bonuses: Scratch/plan built - 10% bonus Kit built - 5% bonus Pre-built (ARF) - 0% bonus This percentage will be worked out on the total marks given by the judges. Judging Three judges who are conversant with aviation in general, model building, and flying will be present from 1400hrs to 1900hrs to scrutinise the participating models and observe their performance. Participants can fly any number of flights. The judges will decide upon a final mark by each of them (maximum 100) on each model, taking into consideration the authenticity to scale (about 50%) and the flight realism (about 50%) aspect of the model concerned. The judges may converse between themselves and with participants and query any aspect of the model being reviewed. The winner of the event will be awarded with the John Earland Scale Trophy and a memento. Second and Third places will be awarded cups and all participants will receive a memento. tional maneuvers during flight. Please see pages 4 and 5 for more details, including a set of notes directed to the judges who will judge the event. Wings Over Ta Qali A few comments on this forthcoming event. All members who wish to lend a helping hand in the organization of this event are to contact Frank Mercieca on 99406618. Any help would be appreciated. The event will be held as previously, with the entrance tickets participating in a Best of Show, so grt going and prepare your models, even in a static or unfinished state. It is also being planned that the public can try their hands at flying r/c using ther buddy lead system at a small charge. Flight simulation on a PC might also be made available to the public. It is also hoped that we will host some foreign participation., together with the usual display by the Armed Forces of Malta See you at Ta Qali Scale Event Notes to judges Please refer and go over the attached paper detailing the rules for this event. The following are salient points to be taken into consideration when assessing the models entered in the Event. This event is being organised with one objective to attract as many participants as possible in order to liven up and increase the interest in scale model building. Organising a Scale event in accordance with international regulations was found to be impractical. The two main aspects for judging this event are Authenticity to Scale and Realism in Flight. Authenticity to Scale (Maximum points 50) Judges are to compare the model with the photograph/3-plan view at any angle and distance and assess the degree of authenticity achieved. The ability or otherwise of the participant to hide model related items such as engine, silencer, hinges, control horns, Rx aerial, etc are to be taken into consideration. Lack of or inclusion of scale details such as rivets, panel lines, cockpit interior, weathering etc should also be taken into consideration. Judges may discuss the model with the participant and ask any relevant questions. Before arriving at a definitive mark for a model, however, judges are advised to have a brief look at all the models entered so that they can assess the different levels of authenticity of the models. By doing so they will be able to give a more accurate assessment of each model. Realism in Flight (Maximum points 50) Judges should asses the model and pilot capabilities to simulate the full size counterpart of the aircraft concerned, with particular reference to take off angle and roll out, speed of model as compared with full size, flying pattern, approaches and landing. Due consideration is to be given to the prevailing weather conditions. The Committee MMAFA 5
