Everyone is invited to a free Hog Roast organised by the Parish Council as part of the commemorations to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War - do make sure you put your names down. Details on page 7. High on the list of current topics of conversation is the building works at Framlingham surgery - and the lack of parking in the meantime. It s due for completion in February. Where s DIY SOS when you need them?! Three extra consulting rooms are being added to allow for more appointments needed by the anticipated 1500-2000 new patients moving to the area. I don t have a date for Flu Saturday so keep your eyes peeled at the surgery. Did you know an unexploded WWII bomb was found in Badingham last month? Phil Jay was spotted hot-footing it away from the vicinity. The bomb disposal team said they were getting 20 call-outs a week, after harvest when people were busy with their metal detectors. Kirsten has asked me to let you know that Play & Stay is moving from Tuesday to Friday mornings - a chance for pregnant mums, parents and carers to get together for music and song with their little ones. Would You Know How to Use a Defibrillator in an Emergency? Wednesday 3rd October 7pm at the Village Hall We want everyone to have the confidence to use the defibrillator to help save a life A nationwide day of Commemorative Events marking the Centenary of the end of the First World War is being planned for Sunday 11 th November; paying tribute to the millions killed or wounded in battle and those on the home front who struggled amidst pain and loss to help ensure freedom survived. Badingham is joining in the commemorations by lighting one of over a 1000 Beacons of Light in remembrance of the end of the war and the millions who were killed or came home dreadfully wounded. The event will also commemorate the huge army of men and women on the home front who, often in dangerous and exhausting conditions, underpinned the war effort - keeping the wheels of industry turning and bringing home the harvests. The beacons will symbolise the light of hope that emerged from the darkness of war. Immediately afterwards, a 1000 cathedrals and churches will ring out their bells across the nation, and beyond, in celebration of Peace. Let us remember those who so selflessly gave their lives at home and abroad, whose sacrifice enables us to enjoy the peace and freedom we have today 6

Message from the Village Hall Management Committee A report, written on behalf of Stay & Play facility at Badingham Village Hall, was read out at the recent Annual Parish meeting stating that - This was a surprising statement and without specifics, it was difficult for the committee to respond to or address these claims. - The committee were approached by Badingham residents requiring a small amount of daytime hours to be made available for various activities, in particular in the winter months when some found it difficult to drive after dark. An art class for all was planned initially. The request was discussed by the committee, which at the time had two representatives from Playschool (Zoe and Sam) and, after much discussion and final agreement by all, both verbal and written, it was decided that a shared space could be accommodated and the main hall would be made available on Tuesday afternoons from 1pm to 4pm for village use twice a month (every second Tuesday). Indeed this was the permanent case some three years ago when Tuesday Teas was a welcome weekly feature in the village. It was further decided that from September 2019 the afternoon slot would extend to once a week. In order to ensure the children s safety, a new lockable door was installed and various locks fitted to allow entrance via a fire door so as not to encroach on the agreed Playschool space. Playschool rent the hall on a daily basis for 40 hours per week and this decision would not reduce their hours but allow shared space for 3 hours twice a month until September 2019 when it will revert to 3 hours a week. This agreement would have absolutely no impact whatsoever on the Stay & Play group who use the hall between the hours of 9.30am and 11.30am each Tuesday under the umbrella of Playschool and within their hire period. Playschool have recently requested that this afternoon facility be moved to a different day of the week. The committee are anxious to facilitate this request 8

if at all possible and will discuss the proposal at the next committee meeting with prior referral to interested Badingham residents. The Village Hall is a fine space for all Badingham residents and we can definitely allay Stay & Play s fears by confirming that the Hall will always be available for use by children, teenagers, families and adults. Opening times: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 1pm for light lunches and homemade cakes and scones - and the 1st Sunday of every month from 3pm to 5pm for the ever popular cream teas. We've had a very good summer in the café, with a mix of regular customers, new locals, holiday-makers (some now regulars) and groups of walkers and cyclists. There's a great vibe in the café and we've had lots of positive feedback. Opening three days a week plus the first Sunday of the month seems to be working well so we will be staying with those hours for the Autumn. Ron D Sylva has now stepped down as Treasurer and we d like to say a huge thank you to him for all his support and commitment. He has done an amazing amount of work in helping to set up the shop and keeping all the finances running smoothly. We are grateful to Malcolm Knott for taking over this vital role. Another big thank you to our small but oh so committed band of volunteers who are making sure the café continues to be a wonderful, friendly place to be. It is a real asset to our community. Shorter days, means long nights so safety comes into mind. New doorbell technology is proving effective at catching criminals with two prolific burglars convicted in the past twelve months. Ring, a security company, have been working with Suffolk Police to provide free video doorbells to victims of burglary. So far, Ring have donated 250 of these devices which allow you to see who is ringing your doorbell from anywhere. Alerts are sent to your smartphone if someone rings your bell or triggers the built-in motion sensor. Register an interest in obtaining one through the police: doorbell@suffolkpnn.police.uk. CRIME - In Suffolk Coastal, Waveney and West Suffolk districts, the overall crime rate was lower than the average in England and Wales. Good news. Superintendent Andy Smith, Suffolk Police s Head of Investigations, explained how the figures show the Constabulary is targeting its policing. Operation Velocity has prioritised resources towards drug dealers. Yes, sadly we have them in the area. Robberies are comparatively small across our county but it s often drug dealing which plays a part in robberies, between dealers and users. During 2017, the team seized 46,000 worth Class A and B, 25,000 in criminal cash and seized 47 weapons. 106 arrests were made, involving drug and gang crimes. HALLOWEEN AND BONFIRE NIGHT On this special night when children like to go Trick or Treating, please parents look after your children. DO NOT knock on strangers doors. If you are visiting friends, let them know you are coming. Enjoy yourselves but please respect the older generation. SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL TRADING STANDARDS Suffolk residents are being urged to be vigilant in regards to Doorstep Traders offering green energy solutions. Often they spot your solar panels and claim to be the company who installed them. They may offer a free Health Check or try to sell additional products or a new system. They have been known to tell consumers that emergency services will not visit their property unless they purchase additional items - this is a lie. Any concerns about someone visiting your door, call Trading Standards 03454040506 or Suffolk Police on 101. If you d like me to do it, I will be happy to help. 12

OIL TANKS The evenings have begun to close in and oil tanks should be out of sight, if at all possible, away from the prying eyes of thieves. If the tank is close to the house, the thief may consider the chances of being seen too high. If the tank is close to the road, a path or drive, it is an easier target. Make sure you have a strong mortice lock. Sadly, we ve seen thefts from tanks near the road in the local area. Usually a large van is involved be observant around the village, we don t want this to happen to anyone else. If you see something suspicious contact the Police Call 999 if you think a crime is taking place, 101 to pass on information It is more important than EVER to be aware of what is happening around you. If you see something unusual, report it at once. Sonja The Maypole Club We always welcome new members and visitors to our meetings on the third Wednesday of each month, at 7.30pm in the Village Hall unless otherwise stated. On 17th October it s our annual party. We will be celebrating Maypole s 25th Anniversary with bubbles, cake and entertainment from Julia Maclusky. Our 21st November meeting includes our AGM and a cake-making demonstration from Rosa Farine Patisserie. Interested in coming along? I'm sure the laughter could be heard as the very warm and still evening progressed. Rita was our host this year. Janet helped cook the delicious food and Merlin was a very able assistant. It is always a joy to meet every month and catch up with friends. We all thank Rita, Janet and Merlin for the wonderful hospitality and another very successful Maypole gathering. 13

Farming Calendar Harvest is over remarkably quickly and smoothly. Not bad yields, considering the weather... well, if you ignore the beans. Now everyone is just as busy getting the land ready for next year. Although, if you travel about, people further afield never seem to be in quite so much of a rush. There s a lot of over the hedge farming watching for the neighbours to make a move. Spot someone moving a combine or drill and it is panic stations all round. You may have noticed parts of wheat crops sprayed off killed off before harvest. This is rather drastic action after you have nurtured it for months on end. The farmers are trying to control a growing menace called Black Grass. Black Grass is mainly found here in the eastern counties but is moving north and west. You will see it standing proud above the ears of wheat and can decrease the crop by 63%. Farmers are used to pulling out rogue wild oats and sterile brome but this weed is proving trickier to tackle. 14

NEIGHBOURS FROM HELL! by Victor Warne The Kestrels have been a Badingham family, hunting from the Potash Road air space for decades. Daily they could be seen resting on the telephone cable linking the Brick Kiln to Mill Road, winter and summer alike. Where they nested each spring no one troubled to find out. This spring however they tried squatting in an owl box in Mill Road. Now this owl box has been the nesting site of several years for a family of Jackdaws! There was a stand-off for about a week between these two families with verbal interludes. With egg laying time getting very close it was decided human intervention may be a solution to this housing problem. An architect designed home was built for the Kestrel family. It replaced a disused woodpecker abode which was a perch used by the Kestrels during the squabbles. Low and behold the Kestrels did take an interest and it looked as if they would move in, one standing guard most of one day in the new Kestrel designed home. It was that day the Jackdaws did not appear and have not been seen since. The Kestrels also must have decided the new accommodation or location was not quite what they wanted and after a few fleeting visits for the next two days they too have not been seen for the last month, not even patrolling the Potash Road. We have had hornets for the first time - very active as soon as they see a light go on. We ve seen as many as 9 on one window pane. Wasps have quietened down - do hornets eat wasps as well as bees? One was munching on a grasshopper as it crawled up the window - gives you the heebee geebees! We ve found two wasp nests dug out by badgers - and made a hasty retreat. They had dug surprisingly large holes - with lots of angry wasps at the entrance. Something else I was surprised to see was two chefs cooking Muntjac on the Great British Menu - numbers could shortly on the decline! Have the inside scoop on Badingham? SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH BADINGHAM Gather Together A service for everyone from nought to a zillion at 10am lasting approximately 30 mins. followed by coffee / juice and biscuits Sunday October 21st - Sunday November 18th If you have not been before why not give it a try you will be very welcome EAST ANGLIAN DISTRICT AREAS by Sonja The Fenland (Fens) is a vast expanse of low-lying, rich agricultural land. The whole area is below sea level with an occasional island of slightly higher ground. Once part of the North Sea, the Fens were drained in the 17th Century. The coastal region, often described as flat and boring is a paradise for wildlife. Liable to flooding but suitable for grazing animals, today we are blessed with a heritage of totally unspoilt beauty; wild and lonely countryside. One quarter of Britain s total area of saltmarsh and mudflats is found in East Anglia. In a country where woodland is the natural dominant vegetation (eg the park opposite the White Horse), traditional management encourages a very great variety of wildlife. Unmanaged woods become dark and lifeless. Fortunately our woods are coppiced and pastures managed (some of them). East Anglia has two Royal Forests - Epping and Hatfield, the Deer Parks like Helmingham Hall. At RSPB Minsmere deer roam and graze on the grassland - Fallow Deer, Roe Deer and Muntjac. You will see them in the evenings and early mornings, keep your eyes open. Bell Heather dominates the Suffolk Sandlings, Sandringham Estate and Tiptree Heath. In the 1950s both sides of the A12 going to Blythburgh and Westleton Road from Blythburgh were covered with heather and gorse, till the farmers started raising pigs on it. I do hope one day it will revert to how it should be. The Breckland (Brecks) is another unique corner of Britain. It occupies a wide area which straddles the western end of the Norfolk/Suffolk border and owes its covering to wind-blown glacial sands, eg a layer of sand overlying chalk and boulder clay. Until its recent afforestation, this low plateau was mainly heathland for many centuries. Broadland, known as the Norfolk Broads, is a loam region and was used for peat diggings. Flooded many hundreds of years ago, when the sea rose, this has valleys with a wide expanse of grazing on the marshes. It is well known for its boating, fishing and is of great interest to the naturalist. It s well worth a visit. 19

Dr Dan Poulter MP Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich Having very much enjoyed spending the summer at home in Suffolk, getting back to the grass roots of being a constituency MP, it s good to return to the daily business of Parliament. While Parliament is in recess, it presents an opportunity to consider the achievements of the previous few months. Across many areas of life, we ve seen significant success. Working with fellow MPs, local councils and others, we ve seen more money for schools, including capital investment for expansion. We ve seen the continuing roll-out of superfast broadband. While for many this is still not a reality, and can t come soon enough, the rollout is proceeding at pace, and due to reach 98% of Suffolk by 2020. Beyond this, we have also secured the investment in highways infrastructure across the county, notably, in my constituency, money for the Brome junction on the A140 at Eye Airfield, enabling much-needed road improvement and safety work to be carried out. Looking ahead, there remains much to do and much to campaign for, including greater investment in our roads and railways, not least our long-running campaign for a fourvillages bypass along the A12 north of Ipswich. At the same time, I am continuing my part-time work as a hospital doctor, alongside my Parliamentary work and throughout recess periods - something which prevents me from being just a career politician and provides a very different perspective and experience to bring to my work in Parliament. But, with September now upon us, the business of Parliament has returned and we resumed work in Westminster this week. Rest assured, I will be bringing all that experience and perspective to Parliament as we continue our debates and discussions on Brexit. Even as an MP, I am, like you I m sure, getting fed up of hearing the word Brexit. It has been a very traumatic process for everybody. Whatever happens next, you may be sure that my top priority in this, and all my work as an MP, is to put the Suffolk people first. The people who live and work in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich remain my principle focus and, on that front, please do get in touch with me if you need my help.
