Sweet Orange Festival Many towns in Puerto Rico have a fruit, vegetable or special food that its their main product. They celebrate it with an annual town festival to share this tradition with the rest of the world. All these recognized festivals have one thing in common, they show you a taste of the real Puerto Rico. The municipality of Las Marias, is located in the mountain zone of Porta del Sol. This agricultural center is known as the City of the Sweet Orange for its surrounding orange groves. The municipality s economy is primarily agricultural and its major crops are coffee, plantains, bananas, and citrus fruits, especially oranges. During the weekend of March 16 to 18 they will celebrate the Sweet Orange Festival (Festival de la China Dulce). It is one of the most popular agricultural celebrations that takes place in the west zone. They use the orange as their special ingredient to prepare a lot of tasty products you can savor like cakes, flans, merengues, cookies, polvorones, and different kind of drinks. The celebration also has live music, colorful folkloric performance dances, arts and crafts to complete your exceptional experience. During your visit, you must explore the central zone and its great tourist attractions. Las Marias is located in an area of archeological importance and it is recognized for it s old coffee plantations under the care of the State Office of Historical Preservation. Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit Home of the best beaches in Puerto Rico, the ocean is definitely the mecca in Porta del Sol. Here in the west coast, the Municipality of Rincón, has some of the best surfing spots in the entire Caribbean, where you can experience world class surfing waves. This zone is the undisputable surfing capital of the island. During the past decades, the Island has been the home of many successful regional and international surfing championships. Puerto Rico's rich culture, the warm welcome to visitors by the local people and the high quality waves have been the keys to the success of these events. This year, on the weekend of March 16 to 18, exciting surfing action returns to the iconic Domes Beach in Rincón for the celebration of the 32 nd Corona Pro Surf Circuit. The event organizers will be hoping for some of the huge and challenging conditions to receive a great field of competitors from the US, the Caribbean, Central and South America. This event is part of the circuit which will determine the APSPR Men's and Women's Champions. Meanwhile, you can see the exciting competition, enjoy music, local food, arts and crafts with the paradisiac views of the Rincón beaches. Rincón is also recognized for their breathtaking beachfront sunsets. Where to go? TAMBOO BAR & SEASIDE GRILL RINCÓN There are few bars and dining spots in Porta del Sol as close to the sand as Tamboo Bar and Seaside Grill. This popular place was recently recognized as the Best Caribbean Bar by The USA Today Readers Choice 2018 competition. Tamboo is a perfect place to enjoy the beach, practice surfing, whale watching, enjoy the sunset view, have an unforgettable nightlife or just relax with a cocktail at the beachfront deck. Where to go? CHRISTOPHER COLOMBUS CROSS AGUADA The anniversary of the discovery of Puerto Rico in 1893 was a reason for a great celebration. As part of the activities, they marked the place of the entrance in Aguada with a cross which since then is known as Cristopher Colombus Cross. In 1928 the actual monument was inaugurated and is one of the oldest monuments in Puerto Rico. A visit to the Colombus Cross is a centennial trip to the past. According to historical data, it represents the zone where 17 ships and 1,500 men landed on the evening of November 19, 1493. Chronicles of Columbus arrival indicates that in the area they found water of high quality Springs. The landing place was baptized as La Aguada and served for a long time as a port where ships replenished water supplies to continue their journeys. The indigenous name of the place was "Guaniquilla" meaning site of springs, equivalent to La Aguada". The place has a beautiful scenery of the coast and is next to the Aguada s coastline boulevard, where you can find a variety of restaurants with exquisite local food and cocktails. While in the area you can visit another religious interest attraction, named Espinar Hermitage Ruins, or you can shop in the Famous Downtown s Boutique stores.
