Fifteen-year-old Casey Stiemer (left), a Grade 11 student at Sutton District High School, claimed the 2011 Georgina Idol title with her rendition of In the Arms of an Angel on Thursday evening. Ryan Marsden of Keswick was second and Samantha Sebo came third. Pefferlaw resident Sarah Simmons was named the 2011 Sutton Fair Ambassador on Thursday evening. In her speech during the competition, Ms. Simmons credited Georgina and its influence on her when she described how it Takes a Village to Raise a Child. Ms. Simmons will be attending university in the fall where she will study environmental sciences in Nova Scotia. Lovely Pearl McLean (above) was the perfect choice for Sutton Fair Junior Ambassador as she enthusiastically accepted her role and gracefully presented various awards and trophies to event winners and competitors for the duration of the fair. 2 Our volunteers are simply the best! A huge round of applause goes out to Garry and Fronie Harpley from the Pefferlaw Association of Ratepayers for all of the volunteer hours that went into organizing the Pefferlaw Picnic this year. The community owes these two a huge debt of gratitude for stepping up to the plate, digging their heels in and pulling off one of the most successful picnics to date. I also want to personally thank them for donating 120 cobs of corn for The Pefferlaw Post Movie Night in the Park the evening before the picnic. And while I m on the subject of volunteers, I have to acknowledge the wonderful job the Pefferlaw Lions Club did. Their antique car show had over 210 cars making it one of the largest car shows in York Region, if not the largest. And what can I say about the hard work and dedication that went into their BBQ kiosk at the picnic? I watched as they toiled away for hours making hotdogs, hamburgers and vegetable samosa for all of the patrons standing in line. Way to go guys and gals...you did a tremendous job and we appreciate all of your hard work! And, what more can I say about the volunteers who worked tirelessly to stage the Sutton Fair and Horse Show? Each year I am humbled by their dedication and commitment always with a smile and a kind word. The faces I see there every year are mostly the same members of the Johnson family, the Woodrow family, the Lockie family, the Bunnick family, the Pegg family, the Raes, the Palletts, the Kays, the Winches, the Sellers and so, so, many more. It is a team that knows their stuff as events and contests are staged seamlessly every year. Everyone involved, and I wish I had room to list them all, is a credit to this community and should take great pride in the fact that they have played a significant role in sustaining this great local tradition. So many other small town fairs have faded into the annals of history but the contribution of more than 250 volunteers at the Sutton Fair has cemented its position as one of only three that have survived. Thank you. FYI If Rob Grossi ever loses his seat on council as Mayor he will definitely have a career as an emcee. He did a great job at the Idol competition and filled in nicely during the delays caused by the tractor pull although I wouldn t quit my day job if I were him to take up a singing career. He did mess up a bit though when he tried several times to blame Ken Hackenbrook for York Region s decision to pave High Street during fair weekend. Sutton couple first on Edge Walk 3 On Monday, August 1, Sutton residents Brian Lytle and Crissie Thompson decided to get high and became the first thrill seekers to lean over the edge of the CN Tower and take in the sights 356 metres (1,168 feet) below. Edge Walk is the latest Toronto attraction which invites CN Tower visitors to don a special jumpsuit and harness that is tethered securely to a bar surrounding the tower. For $175, those who are not faint-of-heart can spend 30 minutes walking on the outside of the tower along a five foot wide cat-walk that has no outside railing. It was absolutely mindboggling and a real thrill, said Mr. Lytle. One maneuver which particularly tested his metal was when he stepped to the edge of the cat-walk, stood on his tip toes and leaned out into space with his arms wide.
4 Beaverton House Tour The 16th Annual Beaverton House Tour on Sunday, July 24 attracted more than 200 visitors to five town and lakeside locations including a three-storey 1880s historic manse now owned by Bill and Beth Ann Kenny, the 1912 Brenda Dollick home on Parklawn Ave. and a century home meticulously maintained by Sheila and Ken Davis on North Street. The photo above was taken inside a lakefront home and shows a great room featuring a post and beam ceiling made from BC Douglas Fir which took workers from Quebec three months to construct.
Quilters united by fire 5 In response to the devastating fire on Dalton Rd. on July 11 which left close to 100 people homeless, quilters from across Georgina responded in droves to a call for help from The Quilting Gnome. Within 15 days no less than 48 quilts were made and hand delivered to the residents.. What a feeling to receive such a gift of love, warmth and kindness at a time when everything you own has been trashed, said Edith Kozma from The Quilting Gnome. Explore the past at Doors Open 9 The Town of Georgina and the Georgina Historical Society are inviting residents and visitors alike to celebrate the community s heritage by exploring the unique properties across Georgina s historic lakefront communities during Doors Open Georgina on Saturday, August 27. In the mid-1800s, Lake Simcoe s waterfront was developed as a desirable vacation destination with large estates, farm acreage and especially the shoreline being developed into prime vacation properties. Small beach communities such as Belfore Beach, Roches Point and Eastbourne gradually merged and the cottages, lodges and cabins were converted into an amazing array of private homes. Numerous heritage sites will be open to explore with additional programming such as walking tours and interpretive exhibits available at designated locations. The 2011 Doors Open event will include: Arnold C. Matthews Nature Reserve a private 135 acre natural forest: Cayley Hall a meeting place where visitors can obtain historical and cultural information; Christ Church an 1862 charming church in Roches Point, Deer Park Public School one of the oldest schools in Georgina built in 1913; Eastbourne Golf Club one of the first courses built on Lake Simcoe; Ingleside located in Orchard Beach, it is one of the oldest cottages on Lake Simcoe; Loretto Maryholme Spirituality Centre an historic 1870s family estate; Nordhoff the former home of Sir Robert Kilgore built in the 1870s; North Gwillimbury Park and Roches Point Eco-Park and Wharf.
10 Junior Farmers at Shoberrys The young charges of Shoberry s Day Care were given a chance to interact with farm animals when members of the York Region Junior Farmers transported samples of their livestock to both sites on Friday, July 22. According to Junior Farmer member Claire Bunnik, the visit helps build awareness among young children and gives them an opportunity to pet and ask questions of us farmers.
