2 Introduction Disabled Access Whitehall is approached by a wheelchair access ramp or by a path with steps. The Tudor building was built on several levels so within the building on the ground floor there are ramps between some rooms. There is a lift to the first floor. The second floor can only be accessed via a steep spiral staircase. Whitehall has some narrow doorways and low ceiling beams. DDA compliant toilet facilities are available on the ground and first floors. We look forward to welcoming you but if you have any questions before your visit please call. New Exhibition Galleries Our new exhibitions tell the stories of Cheam and the local area through the eyes of the people who have lived and worked locally. Meet our cast of characters from Tudor kings to young soldiers in the First World War. Learn how Whitehall was built and how it has evolved over 500 years of history. Cheam in the 1950s Whitehall Historic House The 1950s were a time of optimism and change following the Second World War although its impact was still felt in every avenue of life. Explore 1950s Cheam through our exhibition and accompanying activities. Accompanying events on page 4. Sunday 11th November 10am 5pm Remembrance Sunday Take a moment to reflect in the Cheam Serves WW1 exhibition, find out about local soldiers and make a poppy. Opens at Whitehall Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December Friends of Whitehall: Together for 40 Years Formed 40 years ago, the Friends of Whitehall have supported the historic house in countless ways. Starting from Whitehall and Cheam Library this December, this exhibition will travel across the borough, bringing together memories and stories from the group, celebrating their activity and uncovering a special strand of local history. Opens Saturday 12th January Sunday 28th July 2019 Hatch, Match and Dispatch The 1837 introduction of records of civil registration in England and Wales changed the way we record key events in our lives. We take an in depth look at the way births, marriages, and deaths have been recorded over time and how these records open a window onto our personal histories. The exhibition will include objects, costume and documents. Explore this link to the past through our exhibition and accompanying events. 4 5 These events accompany the Cheam in the 1950s exhibition until January 2019 (see page 3 for details) Wednesday 14th November 7 8pm Frocks and Florals: Fashionable dress in the 1950s Fashion historian and vintage collector Liz Tregenza will give an illustrated talk on fashion in the 1950s, looking particularly at British ready-to-wear garments. The talk will include the opportunity to see original 1950s garments from her collection up close. Tickets are 5. Please pre book on Wednesday 21st November 7 8pm From Stilettos to Saddle Shoes: Fashion accessories in the 1950s Fashion historian and vintage collector Liz Tregenza will give an illustrated talk on popular fashion accessories from the 1950s. There will be an opportunity to study items from her collection up close as part of this talk. Tickets are 5. Please pre book on Friday 7th December 3.30 9pm Whitehall at the Cheam Christmas Fair Begin your countdown to Christmas with a visit to a festive Whitehall. Father Christmas will be visiting us 3.30 6.30pm. Please note this is bookable in advance. Bookings open from Thursday 22nd November in person and by telephone only at Whitehall Historic House throughout opening hours. Tickets are 2 per child. Please pre book on 020 8770 5670. We will also open our Christmas Craft Fair. Stalls, entertainment and activities from 5pm with the lights switch on at 7pm in Cheam Village. Friday 7th December 5 9pm and Saturday 8th December 10am 5pm Dreaming of a Whitehall Christmas Craft Fair Visit the house this weekend to browse and buy unique handmade gifts for Christmas created by local craftspeople. Sunday 9th Saturday, 15th and Sunday 16th December Christmas Weekend Activities A chance to step out of the pre-christmas rush and enjoy the spirit of Christmas at Whitehall. Explore the house, enjoy the decorations, and relax.drop in Christmas crafts each day throughout opening hours. Mince pies and Christmas cake will be available in the tea room. In addition on Sunday 9th there will be seasonal story times at 11.30am, 2.30 and 4pm. No booking required. Thursday 20th December 6 8pm Experience Whitehall Dressed for Christmas by Night A special evening opening after hours to enjoy the house dressed up and sparkling for Christmas. Explore at your leisure and enjoy the Pomander Making workshop, Christmas crackers, bad jokes,christmas cake or mince pie, tea or coffee, soft drink. Tickets are 4 for adults and children go free. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please pre book on Thursday 21st February 11.30am 4pm Revealing our Collections: Plane Wood Come and have a closer look at items from our collection not usually on display, at this free drop in event. Looking at items that have been crafted from wood by hand, and the tools used to make them. Our Museum Collections team will be on hand to give more information about the items and insight into how we look after our collection. Thursday 21st, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February WOOD you believe it s half term! Join in Whitehall s WOOD week, we wondered if you WOOD be so kind to help the laundry maid recover all her WOODen pegs that she has lost around the house. You WOOD think it WOODn t be difficult. Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February Crafts of the Past: Wood A weekend focussing on wood, and its role as an historic and contemporary building material, use for creating tools, decorative items, furniture and much more. Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st March Mother s Day This weekend we particularly welcome mothers and their families. Bring a favourite photograph of you and your Mum together and make and decorate a papercraft photo frame to take home. For children of all ages. See the Hatch, Match and Dispatch exhibition, and treat you Mum to a hot drink and slice of cake in our tearoom. No booking required.

Thursday 6th December Christmas Story time, immerse yourselves in the sounds and smells of Christmas. Help tell the Christmas stories through rhymes and listen to carols from the past. Thursday 3rd January Traditional nursery rhymes Together we will go through some classic nursery rhymes, some action songs and with time to play. Thursday 7th February Love Messy play, make early Valentines cards and pictures with painted hands and shaped stamps. Thursday 7th March Marching around Join us to explore different sounds with our musical instruments, sensory objects, hands and feet.

Sunday 18th November Across Europe by Plates Presentation by Clive Orton, retired Professor of Archaeology and longstanding Friend of Whitehall. Clive never set out to collect plates, they just accumulated. Some he bought, some were gifts, and one he inherited. He will show slides of them to demonstrate how they track his career through archaeology, and he will bring a few of them for you to handle and study for yourselves. Sunday 20th January Carshalton House Estate: Then & Now An illustrated talk by Jean Knight, Chair of the Friends of Carshalton Water Tower about this important eighteenth century estate, and its garden follies. Sunday 17th February Hatch, Match and Dispatch Exploring the Birth, Marriage and Death Records held in Sutton Archive and Family History Centre. (This event is at Whitehall Historic House). Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths began in 1837 and is one of the most significant resources available for genealogical research. Many of these records are available online but there are other sources, most notably parish records and historic newspapers, in your local archive that can add information and context to your research. Come and explore some of these sources first hand, and chat with our archive manager about accessing these records and how Sutton Archives can help you trace the lives of your own local ancestors. Sunday 17th March Cheam Film Afternoon A home movie made by Paul Gibbins, Friend of Whitehall about the opening of the house to the public in 1978, and other events in Cheam about that time including celebrations for the Queen s silver jubilee. FREE. Donations welcomed. Schools Programme and Loan Boxes 8 9 Tudor Everyday Life Our interactive and sensory session will give students the chance to discover Tudors and their changing lives. We explore the everyday life of the Tudors in the local area with primary document sources, artefact handling and an investigation of the Cheam High Street excavations with real pieces of Medieval Cheam pottery. At the end of your session, you are welcome to stay and explore the house and garden further. A self-directed trail is available. Loan boxes are also available. Available to borrow from our Tudor Hall. Room Hire and Children s Birthday Parties Have a party in a Grade * listed building here at Whitehall Historic House. Have full use of the activity room which has access to a disabled toilet and baby changing. If you need a entertainer for your party we can give you more information of where to look.
