KUPENDA AFRICA EAST AFRICA EXPEDITION 2020 www.kupendaafrica.com TRIP ORGANISATION This is the fourth Kupenda Africa Trip to Kenya and Tanzania, and for the 2020 Trip there is an increased focus on catering for the individual requests of each client. If clients wish to engage in activities that are individual to their personal interests, then the feasibility of this can be discussed with the trip organisers. The trip starts in Nairobi on 15 August, and finishes in Nairobi on 28 August, and whilst there are three Tarangire National Park safari options within this period, there is the extra option of visiting other safari destinations before or after the trip. There is also the option of booking a Mount Kilimanjaro and/or Mount Meru expedition that could take place in Tanzania before the trip starts. On previous trips clients have travelled out early, and spent some time at Meserani with Peter & Diane Swan before the rest of the group arrive for the start of the trip. The trip is being provided by Kupenda Africa, and the trip leaders will be the staff from this company. Because much of the time spent in Tanzania will involve engaging with the work of The Meserani Project, Diane and Peter Swan will be directing some of the work here. You can visit the company website at: www.kupendaafrica.com Kupenda Africa will be providing everything for you when you arrive at Wildebeest Eco Camp, Nairobi, on 15 August (transport, food, camping), but flights and insurance are your own responsibility. This allows you the flexibility to select flights that are suitable for you, and many of you will already have annual travel insurance policies anyway. Peter Swan can provide help and guidance with booking the flights, for those who need it. There are options at Wildebeest Eco Camp to upgrade your accommodation from camping to en-suite rooms. There may also be options at Meserani Snakepark to upgrade from camping to basic rooms. Please contact Kupenda Africa as early as possible to enquire about cost and availability of these upgrades. There is the flexibility on some days for you to do your own thing, so long as it does not affect what the majority of participants wish. However, for the 2020 Trip there will be a greater emphasis on participants engaging in individual activities or projects that are of particular interest to them. If clients wish to explore this, please contact Peter Swan.

COST The cost of the actual trip in East Africa payable to Kupenda Africa, will be in the region of $1,100 ( 853). These are provisional estimates, and are based on international currency exchange rates on 5/11/18. However, we are confident that they are reasonably accurate. Over and above this, there will be the following costs for things that you will need to purchase yourself: Flights from the U.K. to Nairobi. Return flights for August are normally from 550 upwards, depending on where you fly from, and with which airline. Peter Swan can provide assistance and guidance with this for those who require it. It is assumed that all flights booked will ensure that clients arrive in Nairobi on 18 August. If most clients arrive on the same flight on that day, then Kupenda Africa will pick you up and transfer you to Wildebeest Eco Camp. Clients who arrive individually will need to take a taxi to Wildebeest Eco Camp. Your own travel insurance. Please ensure that your insurance covers scheduled airline failure, and end supplier failure (company ceasing trading). 100 U.S. Dollars for Visas for Kenya and Tanzania. These can be bought at the borders. Other considerations: You will need to buy your own bottled water each day, although the cost of this is negligible. You will need a Yellow Fever vaccination to get into Tanzania these currently cost about 58 There are other vaccinations that you may well need, but these should all be free. You will need anti-malaria tablets these currently cost about 24 if you choose the new Malarone alternatives. These are high-street chemist prices, but you will get them cheaper at supermarkets or online chemists. You will need a large hold-all to carry all your clothing and personal requirements. You will need a 3-season sleeping bag and a karrimat or lightweight sleeping mattress, and you may be expected to share a tent with another person. You will not need any other specialist clothing or equipment. To gain an insight into the trip, you can read some of the reviews submitted by participants on the 2014, 2016 and 2018 Trips. Go to our website www.meseraniproject.co.uk and follow the Reviews links for each of these trips.

PLEASE BEAR IN MIND If you are sponsoring a pupil through The Meserani Project, and they are still at secondary school in 2020, then you will have the opportunity to meet them, unless they are ill and absent from school. If your sponsored pupil has left secondary school, there may be the chance to visit them in their homes, and spend some time with them. However, if your pupil is in Further or Higher Education, they could be at a School or University hundreds of miles away, and there would be no guarantee of you meeting them. Whilst the itinerary is the same for everyone, there is often the flexibility for you to make your own arrangements, and spend time on activities that are preferable to you indeed, there will be an emphasis on this for the 2020 Trip. The truck will be a non-smoking environment, as will all eating areas. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO NEXT There will be a meeting at the Lord Nelson Inn, at Appleton Wiske (DL6 2AD), at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday 26 March 2019 for anyone who is interested in finding out more details. Please contact us at meserani@hotmail.co.uk if you would like to attend this meeting, or if there is any information that you need to know before the meeting. If you can not attend this meeting, but are interested in the trip, please contact Peter Swan for full details of what to do next. If you decide to commit to the trip, you will need to buy your flights to Nairobi as soon as they become available this should be in August/September 2019. You need to arrive in Nairobi early on the morning of Saturday 15 August 2018, and depart from Nairobi on Friday 28 August 2020. You are welcome to arrive earlier than 15 August and depart later than 28 August Kupenda Africa can arrange accommodation for you. Contact Peter Swan if you require further details regarding this. On previous trips clients have travelled out earlier, and spent some time at Meserani with Peter & Diane Swan before the rest of the group arrive for the start of the trip. There is also the option of travelling out early to do a Mount Kilimanjaro and/or Mount Meru expedition. Contact Peter Swan if you would like to discuss this possibility. Once you have booked your flights, you will need to inform Peter Swan so that he can pass details on to Jason at Kupenda Africa. You will then need to pay a 50% deposit in sterling to the Kupenda Africa U.K. account by May 2020, with the remaining 50% being paid in U.S. Dollars cash when you arrive in Kenya. If you wish to upgrade your accommodation, please let Jason know as soon as possible. The options are: An en-suite room at Wildebeest Eco Camp, Nairobi. A basic room at Meserani Snake Park (limited availability). Prices for these options can be obtained by contacting Peter Swan or Jason at Kupenda Africa.

TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK AND OTHER SAFARI OPTIONS You will see from the itinerary that on 21 and 22 August there is the option to go on a safari in Tarangire National Park. There are three options that are available, as detailed below: One-day landrover safari. Depart Meserani Snakepark on the morning of 21 August, and drive by landrover to Tarangire National Park. Afternoon game drive inside the park. Overnight bush camp inside the park. Morning game drive on 22 August, and return to Meserani Snakepark in the afternoon. This is a highly recommended option, as it includes an overnight camp in the bush a once-in a lifetime experience! Two-day landrover safari with overnight at Tarangire Safari Lodge. Depart Meserani Snakepark on the morning of 21 August, and drive by landrover to Tarangire National Park. Afternoon game drive inside the park. Overnight at Tarangire Safari Lodge, sharing a two-person luxury en-suite tent. Evening meal and breakfast at the lodge. Morning game drive on 22 August, and return to Meserani Snakepark in the afternoon. Prices for these options will be available nearer the time, but if you need an initial estimate, please contact Peter Swan. There are other safari options that can take place before or after the trip. Arusha National Park, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater are all in Tanzania, and easily accessible. Nairobi National Park is in Kenya and is easily accessible. Ol Pejeta Conservancy and the Maasai Mara are in Kenya, but are a half-day drive from Nairobi. All of these options would need to take place before or after the trip, and details can be discussed initially with Peter Swan. MOUNT KILIMANJARO AND MOUNT MERU OPTIONS A further option is to book a Mount Kilimanjaro and/or Mount Meru Expedition, and this can take place before the trip starts. Contact Peter Swan if you would like further information on this.
