City of Highland Weekly Report March 6, 2015 Emergency Preparedness Tip - Storing and Treating Water Administration Emergency Preparedness Water. In a disaster, water supplies may be cut off or contaminated. Store enough water for everyone in your family to last for at least 3 days. Store one gallon of water per person, per day. Three gallons per person per day will give you enough to drink and for limited cooking and personal hygiene. Remember to plan for pets. If you store tap water: Tap water from a municipal water system can be safely stored without additional treatment. Store water in food grade plastic containers, such as clean 2-liter soft drink bottles. Heavy duty, reusable plastic water containers are also available at sporting goods stores. Empty milk bottles are not recommended because their lids do not seal well and bottles may develop leaks. Label and store in a cool, dark place. Replace water at least once every six months. If you buy commercially bottled spring or drinking water: Keep water in its original container, and don t re-store a bottle once it s been opened. Store in a cool, dark place. If bottles are not marked with the manufacturer s expiration date, label with the date and replace bottles at least once per year. Treating Water after Disaster: If you run out of stored drinking water, strain and treat water from your water heater or the toilet reservoir tank (except if you use toilet tank cleaners). Swimming pool or spa water should not be consumed but you can use it for flushing toilets or washing. Treatment Process: Strain any large particles of dirt by pouring the water through layers of paper towels or clean cloth. Next, purify the water one of two ways: Boil bring to a rolling boil and maintain for 3-5 minutes. After the water cools, pour it back and forth between two clean containers to add oxygen back; this will improve its taste.

Disinfect If the water is clear, add 8 drops (1/8 teaspoon) of bleach per gallon of water. If it is cloudy, add 16 drops (1/4 teaspoon) per gallon. Make sure you are using regular bleach 5.25% percent sodium hypochlorite rather than the ultra or color safe bleaches. Shake or stir, then let stand 30 minutes. A slight chlorine taste and smell is normal. For more information on disaster preparedness, please visit www.ready.gov or www.72hours.org. C ITRUS HARVEST FESTIVAL! Volunteer Services will have a booth at this year s Citrus Harvest Festival on Saturday, March 28th. The Citrus Harvest Festival is an annual event held in the Historic District located on Palm Avenue and Main. Please stop by for information about volunteer opportunities available to you. This is a perfect time to find out more information about our programs! VOLUNTEERING is fun and you don t have to do it alone. Volunteering gives you the perfect chance to get together with a friend or spend time with a special group of people. There are several families in Highland that volunteer together on a regular basis. This is a perfect way to spend quality family time! At last months Highland Improvement Team (HIT) cleanup, team members were joined by the Key Club to help assist Firefighters with two projects at Fire Station #3. They were in need of our assistance to help with weed abatement and minor landscaping. Volunteers put their hula hoes to work and weeded out the training area. With all the rain, weeds had grown at a quick rate and needed to be removed from the area. Firefighters at the station have also been hard at work to keep their Station in tip-top shape. They had already completed some of the tedious tasks such as mowing, weeding and trimming bushes. They received a large amount of mulch and needed our assistance in spreading the mulch to help deter weed growth in the front landscaping. Volunteers donned shovels and rakes and went to work. They were able to spread two large piles of mulch across the entire front yard in no time at all. If you have a chance, I strongly encourage you to take a drive by the Station looks awesome! Remember everyone is always welcome to join and help with any HIT project Our next HIT cleanup will be on Saturday, March 21st from 8am to noon. We will be sprucing up the Historic District of Highland in preparation for the Citrus Harvest Festival the following week. This cleanup always receives an abundance of community support and is always a fun time! Come out and join us...don t Miss Out! Please contact Volunteer Services for more information or to sign-up for the March HIT Cleanup.

Now is your chance to join the Highland Blood Drive Committee. How do you join? Interested volunteers simply need to attend a committee meeting to sign-up. The next committee meeting is at 4pm on Monday, March 9th at Highland City Hall, 27215 Base Line. Mark Your Calendar! Highland s next community blood drive is coming up on Monday, March 23, 2015 from 1:30pm to 6:30pm at the Highland Police Station (26985 Base Line). There is still a shortage of blood donations in our region. Please spread the word to family, friends and co-workers to come down and donate in Highland! The entire process takes less than an hour. All you need to bring with you is your I.D. Students can also donate beginning at the age of 15 years. They just need ID and a signed parental consent form. The form can be found online at www.lifestream.org and will be available during the blood drive. Contact Volunteer Services for more information. Highland Sam J.
