ALONG THE RIVER OF GOLD LAUNCH OFFER - SAVE 400 PER PERSON A cruise from Oporto along the Douro River aboard the MS Douro Prince including an exploration of Lisbon May to September 2017

Join us aboard the charming MS Douro Prince for our exploration of the Douro River. Where vessels once laden with barrels of port drifted to Oporto, we will cruise along this lovely river, relaxing onboard whilst admiring the beautiful passing scenery and stopping each day for fascinating excursions. Port wine production is the main industry of the region we will be exploring, the low altitude of the river banks is perfect for cultivating the sweet grapes unique to Portugal s national drink, and the grapevines cascade across the contours of the Douro s many imposing riverside mountains. SPAIN Entre-os-Rios Barca d Alva Regua Vega de Terron Oporto Lamego Pinhao Salamanca Figueiro Castelo Rodrigo Lisbon Coimbra PORTUGAL Our exploration begins with a three night stay in Lisbon, Europe s second oldest capital where there will be ample time to wander along the charming streets. Built on a series of hills, there are spectacular views to be had in all areas of the city, World Heritage monuments and cultural treasures. The intimate size of the city makes it ideal to explore in a few days. Following on from our time in Lisbon, our navigation of the Douro will take us from Oporto, on a wonderfully scenic path, past sleepy villages and a tranquil countryside of almond and citrus trees as far as Vega de Terron in Spain. From here there will be the chance to visit Spain s ancient seat of learning, Salamanca. Along the way we shall visit the world renowned Port wine region, restored palaces, places of pilgrimage and cultural centres. Small towns and settlements perched on the sloping hillsides of the region have retained an aura of Medieval simplicity, its many tiny communities, largely agricultural, clustering round historic churches, monasteries and castles.

Monument of the Discoveries, Lisbon Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, Lamego Oporto s Old Town and the Douro River The Itinerary Day 1 London to Lisbon, Portugal. Fly by scheduled flight. Upon arrival transfer to the Sana Lisboa Hotel for a three night stay. Enjoy dinner at the hotel. Day 2 Lisbon. After breakfast, join our local guide for a morning tour, visit the famous quarter of Belem, stopping en-route to admire the Tower of Belem from the outside. The tower dates back to Portugal s Age of Discovery and has been used for many different purposes until finally being classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Continue to the Monument of the Discoveries and Jeronimos Monastery Church for exterior visits and then drive along the river Tagus passing Black Horse Square arriving in the most ancient part of the city, Alfama where we will take a walk through its narrow streets. The remainder of the day is at leisure for you to relax or explore the city independently. Day 3 Lisbon. A full day at leisure to further explore the charming city. Day 4 Lisbon to Oporto. Check out after breakfast and enjoy some time at leisure before transferring to Oporto to embark the MS Douro Prince. En-route we will stop in Coimbra and enjoy lunch at a typical restaurant. This evening there will be a Welcome Cocktail and Dinner on board. Day 5 Oporto to Entre-Os-Rios. This morning take a tour of Oporto, Portugal s second largest city and a World Heritage Site. This attractive city was originally a Celtic-Iberian settlement and became a prosperous Roman village thanks to its natural harbour. On our tour we drive through its narrow streets to find 16th century arcaded buildings, Baroque churches and chapels, as well as the city s iconic 19th century iron bridge, built by the school of Gustav Eiffel. We continue along the coastal road of the Atlantic to the mouth of the Douro River to view this wealthy neighbourhood with its fashionable villas and manor houses. Our final visit will be to the city s cathedral, located on the top of the Penaventosa Hill. Inside are beautiful examples of golden carved altarpieces and paintings from the Nasoni period, whilst outside you can enjoy the amazing view over the river. The tour will conclude with a visit to a Port wine lodge; see the old casks full of Port and enjoy a sample of this delicious world famous wine. Return to your ship and enjoy a relaxing afternoon of cruising before a traditional Portuguese dinner on board this evening. Day 6 Regua. Depart for Regua in the heart of the port producing region, from where we take our afternoon visit to the unique 18th century Mateus Manor House and its gardens. This fine looking palace and gardens is still owned by the Count of Vila Real and is one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in Portugal. On our guided tour of the Palace you will see the rare books library, as well as vestments and religious icons, also view the remarkable chestnut wood crafting on all the ceilings as well as some beautiful paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Stroll around the romantic gardens which feature a unique 100 foot long cedar tunnel and formal garden. Finally, before returning to the vessel, there will be time to visit the villa s pretty chapel and winery. This evening we enjoy a Portuguese folk music show on board. Day 7 Figueira Castelo Rodrigo. Enjoy a leisurely morning on board as we cruise to Vega de Terron and after lunch depart for an excursion to the picturesque Medieval town of Figueira Castelo Rodrigo, known as the white village because of its surrounding almond trees. Located at about 2200 feet above sea level, and one of Portugal s 12 historical parishes, its streets are typically narrow and steep with 16th century facades and Manuelino style windows. The Romans were the first to build a fortress here, then in 1209 Alfonso IX built the fortress wall. During the centuries Jews, Christians and Arabs lived peacefully here, evidence of this can be seen on Sinagoga (Synagogue Street), however, the once large Jewish community fled during the Inquisition. Day 8 Salamanca and Barca D Alva. From Vega de Terron we depart for our visit to Salamanca, a city rich in culture and tradition. Salamanca has been famous as a seat of learning since the early 13th century and has an impressive history, with many fine monuments and architecture. The city attracts around 40,000 international students each year, giving it a cosmopolitan and modern feel. Our tour includes the University, House of Shells and the classic Plaza Mayor, formally a bullfighting site. Also visit the Gothic New Cathedral, this building was actually constructed in the 16th century, replacing the original 12th century Salamanca Cathedral. After your tour enjoy some free time to explore independently, before having lunch in a local restaurant. During lunch there will be a traditional dance performance of Flamenco. Return to the vessel for a Portuguese barbecue on board this evening. Day 9 Pinhao. This morning we cruise downstream to Pinhao passing the Pocinho Dam and flood gate. Pinhao is at the centre of the Port winemaking LEFT - Vineyards in the Douro Valley

Salamanca Cathedral Port wine grapes, the Douro Valley Mateus Palace and Gardens, Regua area and this evening we go ashore to visit and have dinner at nearby Quinta da Avessada, a traditional Portuguese winery. Day 10 Lamego. During breakfast we cruise downstream towards Regua, from where we will take a half day excursion to the historical and charming town of Lamego. This city houses one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Portugal: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies. Built in the second half of the 18th century over the remains of a 14th century chapel, it is an excellent example of Portuguese Baroque style. It is wonderfully decorated with enormous panels of blue and white tiles, with an impressive staircase of nearly 700 steps. After our tour, there will be some free time to explore the narrow and winding streets, shop and sample the local delicacies or simply relax in a local café and watch the world go by. Return to the MS Douro Prince and sail back to Oporto during the afternoon crossing the Crestuma-Lever dam, arriving in the evening. Tonight join your fellow travellers for the Farewell Dinner. Day 11 Oporto to London. Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for the return scheduled flight to London (depending on flight schedules there may be some free time in Oporto before transferring to the airport). Your Hotel Accommodation Sana Lisboa Hotel During our three nights in Lisbon prior to embarking the MS Douro Prince we will stay at the modern Sana Lisboa Hotel.
