April 2013 About 50 residents of Fannin County enjoyed a bus tour of Fannin County on March 22nd. The bus left from the old Wal-Mart parking lot with the first stop being the Bonham State Park. There is much history to be learned about the state park as well as the other areas that we visited. Other sites included Ladonia/Lake Ralph Hall/ Sulfur River, Lower Bois d Arc Lake, Horse-head Multi- Use Trails, Caddo National Grasslands, Riverby/ Wetlands, Red River, Lake Fannin, Homestead Winery, Jenkins Farm, Buena Vista Turf Farm, and Edwards Dog Training. We learned many interesting facts about the places we visited. For instance, did you know that the North Sulfur River is a great place to find fossils and arrowheads dating back 70 to 90 million years. Contact the Ladonia City Hall at (903)367-7011 for more information on fossil hunting. Also, were you aware that the Bonham State Park has a group facility that will accommodate 94 people? It includes a dining hall with a full commercial kitchen. They also have paddle boats and canoes for rent a GREAT place for a family reunion. Having out of town guests for the weekend? Visit the Homestead Winery for a tour and stop in at their tasting room for some samples. And...don t forget to take them out to the Jenkins farm for some fresh fruits and vegetables. For more information on the places we visited and other sites to see and things to do in Fannin County, contact Randy Moore at the County USDA Conservation Office at (903)583-9513 ext. 3. Lunch was provided at Lake Fannin where we were joined by our State Representative, Larry Phillips. Special Thanks to Fannin Soil & Water Conservation District, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service and a grant from the Martha, David and Bagby Lenox Foundation for sponsoring the tour.
