One of the major problems facing the country in the development of its tourism industry was its poor image, which suffered due to the lack of any sustained tourism branding efforts outside the count ry. Also the infrastructure hurdles, such as lack of proper connecting roads, ports and airports, inhibite d the growth of tourism in Bangladesh. evelopment, with scenes of flash flooding across Western countries television channels spoiling the t ourism image of the country. On top of these problems, the growing violence in the country has given rise to security concerns for tourists and hampered the growth of tourism in the country. Western tourist inflow declines and tourist numbers from Asia increase The review period witnessed negative growth in arrivals from Western markets. However, inbound to urism flows from certain Asia Pacific source markets helped counteract an otherwise more severe decl ine. India continued to be responsible for the greatest number of travellers to Bangladesh, making up t he majority of South Asian tourists flocking to Bangladesh. Tourist numbers from China also grew we ll. Business activities with neighbouring countries were on rise, and this helped the inbound traffic gro w in Bangladesh. Demand for travel accommodation stagnates Travel accommodation sector growth was limited in 2008 owing to the stagnating tourist inflow and b usiness travellers in the country. There was no major project that was announced or completed and the lower tariffs made sure that the value growth for the sector continued to be one of the lowest in the re gion. The sales per outlet for the sector grew, but were still less than the growth witnessed in some nei ghbouring countries that are witnessing rapid growth in their tourism industry. The occupancy levels o f hotels remained way below the desired level and contributed to overall stagnating demand for the tra vel accommodation sector in Bangladesh. Plans to establish National Tourism Authority unveiled One of the major developments of 2008 was the announcement to abolish the present Bangladesh Parj atan Corporation (BPC) and replace it with a new tourism body called the National Tourism Authority. The new body will undertake all the regulatory and policy decisions and actively promote the private investments in the tourism industry in Bangladesh. It also plans to exit all of its business activities in order to provide a level playing field for private players entering the tourism industry in Bangladesh. Air travel demand drives the transportation sector The air travel from neighbouring countries such as India and China increased significantly and helped the transportation sector grow in Bangladesh. The stateowned carrier Biman Bangladesh dominated the air travel sector in Bangladesh, connecting Dhaka the national capital with as many as 27 destinations worldwide. Bangladesh has all kinds of transportatio n and is developing fast to connect its tourist destinations to provide comfortable journeys between the m. T raveller numbers from Europe and America recorded negative growth in 2008, which showed that atte mpts to revive tourism inflows in the country are not working. The growth will be primarily driven by tourists coming from neighbouring countries such as India, China and Nepal. Sector Data TRAVEL ACCOMMODATION Headlines Trends With an occupancy rate of less than 51%, the travel accommodation sector reflected the overall cond ition of the tourism industry in Bangladesh, which was less than satisfactory. Prospects The travel accommodation sector is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% in the forecast period in valu e terms, which will be greater than the volume CAGR of 1%. This reflects a trend towards growth in t he luxury segment of hotels in Bangladesh that will be able to drive more value at lower volumes. Sector Data TRANSPORTATION Headlines Trends Bangladesh is a country where the transport sector is diverse and constitutes a variety of modes such as road, rail and water for carrying passengers and goods. Official data suggests that more than half of Bangladeshis have access to an allweather hard surface road within a distance of three miles. Railways cover one third of the country an d water transport covers roughly 10% of the total area. Prospects In the forecast period value in the transportation sector will register an 11% CAGR. The growth will be driven by air travel, which will register a CAGR of 12% and will continue to drive major traveller volumes from neighbouring countries. Sector Data CAR RENTAL Headlines Trends The stagnant growth in tourist inflows in Bangladesh had a distinct effect on the demand for car rent al services in Bangladesh. With value growth of just 1%, the car rental services continued to stagnate i n Bangladesh. However, the positive growth in 2008 was at least better than the negative growth witne ssed in 2007. Prospects In the forecast period the car rental services value is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5%. Car rental s ervices will grow with the increased participation of private players in this sector in Bangladesh. With the creation of the National Tourism Authority in 2009, the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) w ill exit all its business activities and this will provide a fair playing field for private players in car renta l services. Sector Data TRAVEL RETAIL Headlines Trends Due to decreasing numbers of tourists from highvalue Western countries, the travel retail services in Bangladesh continued to stagnate in 2008. The tra ffic of visitors grew from neighbouring countries such as China and India, but this did not contribute t oo much growth in value for the travel services providers in the country. Prospects Travel retail value is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4% in the forecast period. The value is expecte d to grow at a faster pace than the number of outlets opening in the country. This will give rise to incre ased per outlet sales, indicating a great opportunity in the sector.
