Pete Harrison Prestatyn Artisans Collective Old and Alone Not just an Isolated Incident. A Prescription against Loneliness. ArtisanWales

About Prestatyn Artisans Collective We were formed in August 2013. Moved in to The Old Library November 2014. We are a not for profit organisation. Originally our costs were met by hiring out retail space within the Old Library and running events We also hire rooms out on an hourly, daily or weekly basis.

Our aims To promote Health and Wellbeing via our community activities with our Health Board, and referrals from lots of other sources. Provide a safe and accessible place in the centre of town to hold groups and events to benefit the community. To initiate and facilitate groups that will later be able to become self supporting. Promotion of our town and locality To help and develop Prestatyn in Becoming a Dementia Friendly Community.

Clip from a recent tv interview with Steve and Pete

Prestatyn (Well-being of future generations - community assessment*) Population characteristics - older age structure than Wales and GB, particularly high % aged 65+, with noticeable dip in 16-44 age groups. Population density high. Ethnicity & religion less diverse than national averages. Welsh speakers below Welsh average. Health - limiting long term illness significantly above England & Wales average as is proportion of unpaid carers. High levels of all chronic illnesses, compared to Wales average. Housing and living arrangements - pensioner only households much higher than national average, particularly lone pensioners. High levels of owner occupation & low levels of social renting. House prices well below Welsh average. Community safety - generally low crime rates compared to Denbighshire and national figures. *These statistics used under the terms of the Open Government Licence

Prestatyn (Well-being of future generations - community assessment*) Economy - residents' employment in communications/finance/property, and professional/technical/scientific industries is comparatively low. Comparatively high employment in wholesale/retail and health & social work. People with no qualifications high compared to national figures, as is proportion of people in part/low skilled socio-economic grouping. People aged 16-24 make up a larger proportion of unemployed claimants than average. Income and benefits - income levels well below national average. Proportion of people claiming benefits well above national levels, especially for incapacity benefits, but slightly below Denbighshire average. Poverty and deprivation - high proportion of children in families claiming Working Tax Credits - particularly 'in-work families. Higher than average levels of deprivation in the community safety domain of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation. *These statistics used under the terms of the Open Government Licence

Some of our crafty community engagement ideas

Men s Shed Prestatyn Started in 2013 with a handful of members. Now over 60 citizens engaged Alongside social activities at The Old Library each Tuesday, we now have our own building and gardens that we are renovating.

With Denbighshire Countryside Services, North Wales Police, Denbighshire Housing, and BCUHB. Now part of a Denbighshire wide Nature for Health Initiative supported by Natural Resources.

Nature for health at the Morfa Gateway Project. A joint project with: Denbighshire County Council Housing Countryside Services Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board Supported by Natural Resources Wales Launched Thursday 27 th September 2018

Prestatyn In Bloom Culturing Civic Pride via Creative Horticulture The winning of awards provides valuable national promotion for the town and recognition of hard working community groups. There is increased community involvement and pride - bringing people together from different backgrounds and ages. This helps improve health, well-being and social outcomes and reduces crime.

Mind Music Alongside Prestatyn Town Council we hold Mind Music sessions each Wednesday at a local church hall. It is a really fun informal session with people living with dementia and other community members attending The power of music, especially singing, to unlock memories and kick start the grey matter is an increasingly key feature of dementia care. It seems to reach parts of the damaged brain in ways other forms of communication cannot.

The I CAN campaign, aims to raise awareness, tackle stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. Money raised through the campaign will help fund community projects which provide support closer to home for people experiencing a mental health crisis, as well as schools based programmes and improved early intervention. It is being led by a coalition which includes Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board, NHS charity Awyr Las, third sector organisations and people with lived experience of mental health problems.
