Interlaken 2 Wrap-Ups Kathy and I had the opportunity to do a little traveling, visiting and skiing for the last six weeks. We had hoped to miss the terrible Ohio Winter but I understand that this year has been a little bit different. A big Thank You to Tom and le for all your help at the February Texas Two Step meeting. Maybe we can do a repeat sometime. I still have to learn to do that. I am certainly sorry I missed the March Route 40 Roadhouse meeting with Christian and Bambi in command. Thank you very much. You had a great turnout. Once again we have been shown that if there is a good time to be had, Zanesville will be there! It is time to bring Winter to a close. Snow Trails had the best snow in Ohio this year. The Shrider s Holiday Valley trip in February was great fun from what I hear. Marla Morgan s trip to Seven Springs was a success and Bob Wirick just may have set a new standard for bluebird days with the Taos Trip. I love having long, challenging runs apparently reserved for just me and a few NSC friends! The year ends with a smile. I think it is finally time to hang up the skis until next year. C mon and join the fun doings the Activities Committee will be offering in the interim. It has been a privilege to serve as president of the NSC these past two years and as VP for the two years before that. I have been able to work with some of the most dedicated, thoughtful, caring volunteers I could possibly imagine. Six years ago, I hadn t even heard of the NSC. Now you are some of my best friends. You know the positions on the board that need to be filled. Give us a call with your Sure I ll be Prez or Sure I ll be treasurer. No previous experience necessary. Will train. Page APRIL 2 2012 THE INS IDE EDGE THE INS IDE Page EDGE 2 DO YOU LIKE BEING ON THE WATER? DO YOU LIKE SAMPLING WINE, EATING GOOD FOOD AND HAVING A GREAT TIME WITH YOUR NSC FRIENDS?...THEN YOU RE GON- NA LOVE THIS NEW SKI CLUB TRIP!! August 3-4 (maybe optional 5 th ) What we are in the early stages of cooking up is a trip to the Port Clinton/Put-in-Bay area. The focus of the trip will be for our group to join a Jet Express Excursion to Pelee Island, Canada, that departs Pt. Clinton at 5PM, August 3rd. It is approximately a one hour ferry ride. Upon docking there we will be transported to the Pelee Island Winery. At the winery a casual reception awaits us that will include tasting a sampling of the island wines and hors d oeuvres. Other highlights include a picnic style BBQ dinner and live entertainment. We ll ferry back to Pt. Clinton where the trip will include lodging for Friday night. Other trip details are still being worked out. Possibilities include me just providing participants with possible activities for do it on your own Saturday/ Sunday activities (Put-In-Bay), or perhaps an option to include a second night s stay in the club trip. VERY IMPORTANT: DUE TO CROSSING INTO CANADA A VALID US PASSPORT IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE! At this point I need to get an idea of the level of interest. This is not a commitment, but if this really appeals to you and you have that weekend available, please email me at: mikedarylshrider@roadrunner.com and let me know of your interest. Very rough ballpark for a couple, for one night, is in the $250-300 range, but please don t hold me to that. I can t be at the April meeting, but I will disseminate more information as soon as I know more about the level of interest and have more specifics. Trip Leader: Daryl Shrider KENTUCKY DERBY Join Tom and Marge Brubaker as we head to the KENTUCKY DERBY in Louisville on the FUNBUS out of Lancaster. The Cost: $145.00 for a bus ride to and from Churchill Downs. which includes the infield general admission, and a box lunch. Call the FUNBUS at 740-653-4600 with a credit card payment or send them a check. We will leave from the Jacksontown Park n Ride at Hwy 70 and 13 at 8am on May 5. Or you can leave from Lancaster at 7:30am at the old Big Bear on E. Main St. There is probably a pickup in Zanesville also. We will be returning around 2am on May 6. We have the same boat, THE PARKER HERE, out of the Anchors Away Marina in Marblehead, OH. We start of from the marina at 7am; there is camping & hotels nearby or you can drive up early (it s about 2.5 hours from Newark). The cost of the trip is $100, which covers the boat rental and all the bait & tackle. The boat is equipped with a full head and galley, plus Captain Ed will take us wherever we want for lunch. Whenever we get tired of fishing, we ll return to the Marina with our catch where we can have it cleaned and cooked for immediate consumption. It don t get fresher or easier than that!! Please get your coupon & payment to me as soon as possible so that you aren t left out of the FUN!! Tim Crowley papatimmyjay@yahoo.com 740-328-9883 On February 18th, we lost a long-time member and friend, Carl Sandman. He was born in Newark and graduated from Utica High School in 1951. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he worked at contour Forming for 35 years, where it was known that he was the best tool & die maker in Licking County. Proud of his full-blown German heritage, Carl was a member of the Newark Maennerchor and could be found most weekends doing the polka and many ballroom dances with Nancy. He can be best remembered by what Nancy Channell wrote to me about him, Carl and I dated for about 76 years and he was the most wonderful person I have ever met. So kind, loving, honest, and...was loved by all that knew him and he loved all of them.

The skiing was great! No lift lines! There were 14 members on the trip, along with Dottie & Walt Young, John & Jeff Singleton and Katie & Lee Curry who happened to be there at the same time. The only adverse thing that happened was on Monday afternoon when we were all ready for a dip in the hot tub, but we were surprised to find it was a cold tub. Someone earlier had hit the emergency stop button shutting down the tub! After spending a few unpleasant minutes in the tub, we went into the sauna which was a tight fit but much warmer. I hope everyone enjoyed the trip and Charles Johnson 1st John Gutridge 2nd Paulette Weber 3rd Rita Swank 8th Sheila VanDorn 19th Penny Slater 20th Tim Crowley 21st Cathy Schlegel 25th Bob Wirick 28th Taos was a Great Trip! Thanks to Bob Wirick for putting together a wonderful time for all of us!!! We skied together, ventured out for sightseeing, met for dinners & after skiing drinks, and thoroughly enjoyed our time in New Mexico! We... skied Taos Ski Valley, Angel Fire, Red River, and 6 of us skied for 10 bucks each at Sipapu we crossed over the Rio Grande River Gorge (some figured out how to get their feet wet-you know who you are!!) we soaked in Ojo Caliente Hot Springs some folks took a side trip to Santa Fe we all enjoyed great food, excellent skiing, and we even celebrated a birthday...and we know we forgot some stuff...wow what a week!!!!! See you all at the April meeting! We have an amazing scrap book Penny Slater prepared for all to look at and will have pictures to show as well. le and Tom Huffman For April, we will be back to our regularly scheduled Happy Hour - the 3rd Friday of the Month from 6:30 til 9p. We are going to head back to Easton Town Center (really? On a Friday night?!? C mon!!! The traffic alone ) in Northeast Columbus for a month-belated St. Paddy s party at Fadó Irish Pub on April 20th. Bring us tales of St. Paddy s glories from your misspent youth (or old age, as the case may be). With the recent weather patterns, a dark Irish snug may be the coolest place to hang out! May will take us back to the East side of our club when we re-visit The Barn in Zanesville (well after March Madness, this time!) on May 18th. Hopefully, it ll be a nice, clear night to hang out on the patio and enjoy a few drinks with friends. On June 15th, we are going back to the great patio & amazing view at Hidden Lakes Winery in Canal Winchester. You can t beat food, wine, a pond, & friends in June! hopefully we can do it again next year! Trip Leader, Mike Shrider 2012 Happy Hours Columbus, Ohio Come and join the NSC on our 5th Annual Showdown in the Shoe Tailgate Party. The Ohio State men's lacrosse team hosts the Showdown in the Shoe vs. Air Force at 11 a.m. followed by the 2012 Ohio State LiFE Sports Spring Game at 1:30 p.m. The word is that this year s Spring Game could be a record turnout for anxious fans first glimpse of Urban Meyer s coaching debut in Columbus. We will meet at the Park n Ride by Damon s in Newark at 7:45 a.m. to carpool at 8:00 a.m. to the OSU Shoe Parking lot. Bailey s coffee, regular coffee, tea, juice, donuts and muffins will be served when you arrive. We will set-up the grill to start grilling around noon. Everyone is asked to bring a side dish or go in with another member on a meat item such has hamburgers, hot dogs or brats. Please contact Sandy about your item, so as not to have too much of any one item this year. The condiments will be provided along with plates, napkins and cups. We will clean-up and walk to the stadium by 1:00pm. Of course, those interested in attending the lacrosse game may head over earlier.

The best part: no cost to our members for this meal & drink ticket. This is one of the meetings where we provide you with a pretty cool meal just for showing up & having some fun! This is the Famous Maennerchor Spaghetti recipe, accompanied by garlic bread & salad. They ve asked for a couple of volunteers that morning to help prepare the special sauce (hey, we get to memorize the recipe if we watch closely don't we???), & they ve also asked us to provide 4-5 volunteers to help serve & clean up. Anyone interested in volunteering, please give me a call, I am one of the volunteers & am coordinating the effort. I honestly think it ll be pretty fun to work with them to have a meal like this, so consider joining me to cook for & serve the "Funnest Ski Club on Earth"!
