National Region N Tennessee District Chapter H Harpeth Wings Chapter H Franklin, Tennessee We eat at 9:00 am, meet at 10:00 am at Shoney s Restaurant, Hwy 96 just west of I-65 in Franklin. 4 th Saturday of each month. Come join us at our next meeting October 28. http://www.chapterh.com TNChapterH Volume 10 Number 10 October 2017 Director s Corner Hello everyone, Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge Fall has arrived and I have noticed in some of my traveling that some of the leaves have started turning colors. Thu has already started telling me that she wants to go look at the leaves. We did get out and visit Chapter Y at their meeting last month and went for a ride with Chapter E after the meeting. We had a enjoyable ride. Pat Eiting traded his two wheeler for a three wheeler. On Oct 7th, he also took the TRC class. When I spoke with him about how he liked the class, his response was that he really enjoyed being able to learn and practice with his Will & Thu Horsley Chapter H Directors willchapterh@gmail.com 615-483-2335 new bike. That you can't get out on the street and practice this stuff. It is a reminder for all of us that when these classes are offered, it gives us a chance to practice in a controlled setting and possibly remind us of riding techniques that we may have forgotten. Thu and I are planning on getting out to visit other chapters and put a few more miles on the bike before winter sets in. Page 1

It seems that the next Winter Event and OPS meeting will be on the same day next year, January 13, 2018. Swearing in of new officers will be conducted then. The OPS meeting will start at 8:00 am and should be over about 10:00 am. We were lucky in that we never saw any of the bad weather that the coastal part of Texas had. The attendance for Wind Ding was the lowest I have ever seen in my Wing Ding attendance. Only 4,200 people were at Grapevine. The weather I am sure had some affect on this low attendance. I am proud to say that Tennessee was very well represented and we had a good turn out from the Volunteer State. There was no problem parking this year, not like in 2004 when you had to park a mile away and ride a shuttle to the facility. The town of Grapevine was very good to us Wingers, hosting a street party and providing food and entertainment downtown in the old city. Patti will probably fill you in on our adventures while there. Lost keys, lost remotes, Rusty the wonder dog taking off and running amuck. I will let Patti fill you in on this part. Anita Arkile the president of GWRRA met with District Directors and with Chapter Directors to explain the new structuring of GWRRA. She did a very good job in explaining why some of the changes were necessary. The main thing is they want to see more fun at the chapter level, doing away with a lot of the formality of a meeting and more riding and doing fun activities. They want to see more district involvement in riding and doing activities with the chapters. They are putting a lot more responsibility on the District Educator to keep up with the chapter members levels program. The changes have caused a revamp of the Couples of the Year Program. That to be announced some time in December or January. Dropping the Chapter of the Year Program Nationally, but allowing the districts decide if they want to keep it within the district. They are also rewriting the MOU and the Officer Appointment forms. Adding the Rider Coordinator position as a officer for chapter and district. We possibly will learn more at the Region N final OPS meeting in Johnson City in November. Page 3

Chapter charter fees are due. The fee is $100.00 but the district is paying $50.00 of the fee so all the chapter has to do is send the district a check for $50.00. This is due by November 1st. We have to pay the charter fees at the Region N Rally and OPS Meeting. Please make the charter fee check out to TN.GWRRA in the amount of $50.00. Mail check to Robert (Bob) Mack Jr., 1470 River Road, Kingston, Tn. 37763. Wing Ding 2018 will be in Knoxville Tennessee. That was a surprise but a very pleasant surprise. Tennessee has been selected again to be the host state for Wing Ding. Check out their web site to locate the hotels and preregister. Looks like it is going to be a fun event. Might want to get those motel rooms booked soon because they are filling up fast, especially the ones close to the convention center. Go to the National web page and they have a listing of the motels. If you don t get one the motels near Maryville and Alcoa are not far from the convention center. For you people with pets the Holiday Inn at the convention center is pet friendly. We hope to see you at the final region N rally the first week in November. Get your pirate costume ready and join in on the fun. Patti and I hope to see you there. Holiday Inn Johnson City. Winter Event is set for January 13, 2018 at the Lane Agri Center, 315 John R. Rice Blvd., in Murfreesboro. Patti has the registration form and flyer completed and will attaché to the newsletter. Come and support your chapter couple as they go through the selection process. The theme this year is a Senior Prom. We would like each chapter to either email us a class (group ) picture or bring one to display at the party. We are going to play games, dance, do some table decorating, and do a little scrapbooking. Costume contest will be individual, couple, and chapter. We are also going to celebrate our new Couple of the Year for 2018. Sign up and join us for Winter Event. OPERATIONS MEETING FOR ALL CHAPTER OFFICERS (OPS) THE DISTRICT OPS MEETING WILL BE HELD ON JANUARY 13TH THE SAME DAY AS WINTER EVENT AND THE COUPLE OF THE YEAR SELECTION. LANE AGRI CENTER, 315 JOHN R. RICE BLVD. MURFREESBORO. WE WILL START AT 8:00 AM. WE REQUEST THAT ALL OFFICERS ATTEND THIS MEETING. WE WILL COVER ALL CHANGES AND SWEAR IN ALL NEW OFFICERS. IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A REPRESENATIVE ATTEND FOR YOU. NOTIFY MYSELF OR ONE OUR ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIRECTORS, TROY AND VICKIE, DENNIS AND JAN, OR RICHARD AND CONNIE. WE ARE MAKING CONTACT WITH SOME HOTELS AND GETTING A GROUP RATE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TO TRAVEL. WE WILL POST THIS AS SOON AS WE GET THE HOTELS SET UP. CALL ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS. See you at the OPS meeting and at Winter Event. We see that several are planning on fall color rides. Ride safe and have fun. Rider Education District Educator Alvin & Josie Nelson October my time of the year to ride!! Days are getting cooler and the leaves are starting to change. Don t become a distracted driver admiring Mother Nature. Any time you take your eyes and your mind off of driving you increase your risk of being in an accident. Whether it be the scenery, your GPS, Radio or phone! It is always good to know where you stand with your Rider Education Levels. Did you know that you can access your level information in the RE Database. That s right you can make sure that I, Roger and Marie are doing our jobs and entering your information correctly. Here s how: Go to gwrra.org and select Rider Education under the Programs drop down. This will take you to the RE page. On the left hand side select the My RE link and that will take you to the login page. Or enter this directly into your address bar and it will go directly to the Login Page: http://re2.gwrra.org/ login_mem.php The login explanation below was taken from the I Need help logging in link on that page. You must be a current GWRRA member to login. Username= Membership Number. i.e. 123456 or 1234-01 Password= Numbers in Your Address + Membership Expiration Date (MMYY) I.e. 12 W. 6th St only 12 would be used followed by your membership expiration date. I.e. if your membership expiration date is 01/15 then your password would be 120115 Check the front of your Wing World or Membership card for your membership number and expiration date. It worked for me!! One last thing we are having a TRC class in Cleveland TN on Oct 28 th. I will have the registration form on the website in the next day or so. District Membership Enhancement Program Coordinators (MEPC) Dennis & Anne Greer Last month Anne and I were on our way home from Wing Ding 39 when the Sept newsletter came out. This month we are at the North Carolina Rally (Wings Over the Smokies). I did find out about some of the GWRRA reorganization at WD 39 and will report on that later in this article. Last month I finished introducing all 17 of the Chapter Couples to you. Have you hugged them lately and told them how much you appreciate them and what they do for your Chapter? I know they have been out visiting because I ve seem most of them chasing the Couple of the Year (COY) Plaque. I have one other request for you. Please ask them to represent your Chapter in the District COY selection. Chapter COYs, please email, call or tell me you plan to be in the District COY selection. I would like this information as soon as possible. I have sent you and your Chapter Directors emails on this important event. I need your resumes on or before 13 Dec 2017. You now have a better change than ever before to become an International COY. One of the changes in the Membership Enhancement Program is, starting in 2019 (your COY year), there will be six (6) International COYs instead of the two (2) we have today. There will be four (4) International COYs from the US, one from Canada, and one from overseas. The guidelines are still being developed. Here is the news from GWRRA Home Office shared with us at WD39 with respect to the Membership Enhancement Program. The following programs will be eliminated at the International level starting in 2018. Membership Enhancement Coordinator of the Year, Chapter of the Year, and Chapter Newsletter of the Year. All Special Interest Groups except Ham Radio will also be eliminated. The Recruiting and Retention Program will remain. Reasons were given for eliminating and keeping these programs. I don t recall exactly what was said so will not expand unless I see something in writing from Home Office. Even though several programs have been eliminated at the International level, each District can continue these programs at the District level if they please. This will most likely result in a re-write of the guidelines for each of these programs at the District level. Tennessee currently makes a quarterly Newsletter award instead of an annual award. Some minor guideline changes will be made for the newsletter program. It is my goal to have all District Membership Enhancement Program guidelines updated and posted on the District website before 1 Jan 2018. As I said, the International COY program is still alive and the guidelines are being updated for the 2019 International COY selection. They will divide the USA into 4 areas, then select an International Couple from each of those areas. Those areas are still being defined. One couple from each of these four (4) areas will be selected as the International COY of that area. The selection process will take place via interviews/zoom calls. Again, I don t know who will be performing these interviews. This information may be in the new guidelines. After you are selected as an International COY, you will attend WD for that year and be introduced. I don t know if this will be before opening, as it is today or at opening. Again, guidelines are still being developed. You will answer at least one (1) question from Shirley Stephens-Garcia in front of the assembly. Page 7

Again, thanks to all current MEPCs and I ask members in Chapters without MEPCs will you step up and help? I would like to hear whatever likes, dislikes, or questions you have concerning the Membership Enhancement program so we can make it better for everyone. Please correspond with me at TN.MEPC@gmail.com. Hope to see you on the road. Dennis & Anne Greer TN District MEPCs (931) 728-1463 (H) (931) 409-9045 (C) **************************************************************************************************** Rider Education You ve Got Mail By Bob & Althea Berry GWRRA Rider Education Directors From the August 2017 Insight Newsletter (http://gwrra.org/oconnect/newsletter.html) I always enjoy getting letters (emails, of course, but I prefer the connotation of letter because, to me, it just seems more personal). The one I am about to share with you is especially timely for two reasons: 1. It shares a story about a mistake a member made resulting in a crash and what he might have done to avoid it all. The Rider Ed Team is continuously seeking ways to encourage members to tell us of their incidents/mishaps so we can learn from each other. 2. It emphasizes the increased importance and responsibility of the role of Ride Coordinators at the Chapter and District level The member, being an accomplished rider but new to group riding, said that while doing his homework in preparation for a group ride, I noted that several of the articles suggested (didn t require) put- ting newbies close to the lead rider. I expected to be assigned such a position. I also expected a brief pre-ride meeting to review the group rules of the road. I was a little surprised that neither hap- pened. But these folks had been riding together for years and were very comfortable with an inexperienced groupie in the line-up. During all of this I was positioned toward the rear of the group, with about eight bikes between me and the leader. The two bikes behind me, another group rider and the sweep rider, had fallen be- hind some distance, and had gone out of sight in my rear-view mir- ror, leaving me as the erstwhile sweep. So, I was in a mindset to keep a lookout in my rear-view mirror if nothing else. The writer then described a series of events, possibly caused by his divided attention, leading to a crash and landing him in the hospital with serious injuries. Page 8

The rider ahead never saw it happen, he said. The rider behind, because of the large gap, apparently didn t notice the bike piled up some distance down the shoulder of the road. The sweep rider only caught a glimpse of a wrecked bike as he rode by, and thought it was a solo rider or someone from another group. (They did turn around to offer help). So, Bob here s the bottom line going forward, he said. In many of the group riding rules documents I looked over, the suggestion to put novice group riders up front near the leader was stated but never explained. There may be many reasons for that, but here s a new one for you if you put a newbie near the tail, and the tail gets separated from the group for whatever reason, that newbie s attention will be divided between what s happening in front of him and behind him. If I had been positioned near the leader, I would have been focused on the leader, and consequently the road ahead of me. That, and other good reasons for putting newbies near the front, need to be explained and fleshed out with examples if possible. I m happy to serve as a bad example. I am grateful for this member s courage in sharing his thoughts with all of us. We talk a lot about GWRRA being a family and what better way to demonstrate that than by helping one another. It starts with the Chapter Ride Coordinator at the beginning of every ride. Maybe even share this story with your Chapter members and talk about what might have been done differently. I encourage all of you to pass on stories you have heard or know about. If it helps one of our peers avoid a similar misfortune, it s a winner. Also, be assured, as I have assured this writer, that if requested, anonymity is guaranteed. Ride Safe, Bob & Althea **************************************************************************************************** Chapter Couple of the Year David & Karen Hill Fellow Wingers, Many of those who attended the Ride to the Races on July 1 st joined us for a second time along with some newcomers on September 23 rd. Altogether about twenty Wingers from four chapters (A, N, G, and H) came to the race. Four sports cars wowed the crowd with a drifting demonstration and the Bandit Big Rigs put on a show that no one will forget. The two heat races and the two challenge races had some bumping and crashing with 88- Mike taking the winners circle after placing first in his challenge race. The A-Main Race, however, ended suddenly in the seventh lap when the #3 truck hit the #88 between turns 3 and 4, shoved him into the wall and then OVER IT into the catch fence, which blessedly HELD him. The #3 then slid along the home stretch wall (with his hood and front axle departing in the process), and stopped Page 9

just past the flagman s stand. Both occupants of the stand jumped out the back side as the #3 took out the lights on the front. Amazingly, there were NO serious injuries to anyone. All the safety systems in the trucks and on the track worked as designed. A very big thank you to all the Wingers who sought to calm and comfort us as we processed what had just happened. We are thankful that we were surrounded by so many wonderful caring folks. Mike managed to climb out his truck on his own, then stand on his door to wave at the crowd (and Mom) showing that he was okay. Later that night a rotator (special tow truck) lifted our dear Mackvader up off the wall so the embedded catch cables could be removed, and then placed it on the flatbed waiting on the track. Mike is still sore but otherwise okay. He was quite shaken by the possibility of going into the stands and causing injuries or worse to the fans. The truck was too seriously damaged to race again this season, or so we thought. In two weeks Mike had the truck patched up and back on the track racing in South Carolina. He had just overtaken #14 for first in the big race when the truck fishtailed as he approached the finish line leaving him in second place. (He had lost one rear tire early in the race from a bump.) As Mike fishtailed he clipped the #3 and sent him spinning karma! For a truck we all thought had raced its last it was a great finish! The following week David and I rode out to the North Carolina Rally in the Valley. The trees were just starting to change color and it was a beautiful ride. We taught our first class together (Brr, It s Cold Outside) and served as judges for the COY event. There were lots of good vendors and activities, plus we took our own little ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We saw some late season wildflowers and encountered fog/clouds as we rode. Even a light drizzle didn t take away from the pleasure of riding the hills and ridges. Most of the Tennessee Wingers stayed at a campground in Maggie Valley (we had a tiny cabin there), so we had a campfire and potluck supper together the last night. During the night a front came through dropping the temperature to 41 for the ride home Brr, it was COLD outside! Looking forward to seeing you on a ride or at a chapter meeting, Karen and David Hill, 2017 TN District Couple of the Year **************************************************************************************************** Wing Ding 40 will be in Knoxville August 28 September 1, 2018.
