ABOUT CROATIA* Treasure trove of impressive history Welcome to Croatia! A land whose rich cultural heritage is not discovered only from within the walls of numerous museums, galleries and churches, many of which today, as zero category monuments, are included in a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, but much more in that magical place on the Mediterranean, where even the shortest stroll becomes a journey down a staircase thousands of years old which takes one through a history that is at the same time turbulent, exciting and glorious. Whether walking the intricate grid of narrow white stone streets and alleys, or revelling in the teeming life of the port towns of Istria, Kvarner or Dalmatia, or climbing the green serpentines of Central Croatia to the fairy-like fortresses and castles, each step is an ever fresh experience, made special by the fact that on her territory as many as four cultural circles meet, intertwine and complement one another - west, east, Central European and the southern spirit of the Mediterranean. Croatia is a land of urban culture which numbers more cities than any other part of the Mediterranean. But that is not all... you may not know that Croatia is the birth place of the cravat (neck tie) and it is from here that this fashion accessory and symbol of business originated and spread across the world. Also, the first ever ball-point pen in the world was invented by Slavoljub Penkala from Zagreb, back in 1906. That is why, at the beginning of the 20th century, Zagreb was the European center for making pen products. Cravats with original Croatian patterns and replicas of the first ball-point pen are an ideal gift that can be purchased in the country of their origin! ABOUT ZAGREB* Yours to Discover Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is situated in the heart of Europe. It has excellent transport links via air, road and train. It is close and yet different... Zagreb is both old and youthful. Two in one, the present resides within the past which has been written for over 9 centuries and can be found inside museums, in historical monuments and along city streets. Zagreb is a city wreathed with an abundance of green parks. Along narrow spaces of pedestrian walkways there are many cultural and art institutions, a fine blend of the modern and traditional. Zagreb has proven to be a great host to many international congresses, corporate meetings, cultural and sporting events, and a place where true professionalism is combined with an honest and open heart.
Zagreb has been the foundation from which many excellent scientists and artists have ventured out into the world; it is also the birth place of some of the world s most important heritage items like the cravat (necktie) and ballpoint pen, both of which have become traditional symbols associated with the business world. Zagreb is the starting-point of many memorable travels and memories. Its green surroundings and its fantastic connection to the scenic Adriatic coastline, by both air and highway are close by and await you. Other main attractions include one of Europe s most lively outdoor markets, and visiting it always proves to be a memorable experience to all visitors to Zagreb. It is here that you will remember those almost forgotten scents and tastes of childhood and where you will enjoy a diversity of colour... Despite being a Central European city in geography, culture and baroque architecture, in many ways, Zagreb has a Mediterranean way of life. Thanks to its many influences, the city has a special charm and hospitable feel generated by its open-hearted people. Many say that nothing compares to this city! Zagreb has a heart, and you...you have Zagreb. A walk through Zagreb is an interesting and pleasant journey that encapsulates both history and modern day life. Ilica, the longest street in Zagreb, divides the city into the old romantic Upper Town and the young, busy and business orientated Lower Town. The oldest areas, Gradec and Kaptol, from which Zagreb arose, are considered to be one of the most preserved and beautiful European city centres built in the Art Nouveau style. The Upper and Lower Towns are connected through the Kamenita vrata (Stone gate), yet another recognizable Zagreb tourist attraction that is linked to many legends and beliefs, as well as to faith and peace. *For more information about Croatia and Zagreb please check: http://croatia.hr/en-gb/homepage http://www.zagreb-convention.hr http://www.zagreb-touristinfo.hr We are looking forward to welcoming you in CROATIA!
