The National Association of Geoscience Teachers Eastern Section Spring Conference May 30- June 2, 2013 Hosted at Lock Haven, PA Geological Excursions in the Allegheny Plateau and Valley and Ridge sections Karen Aucker, retired Earth & Space Science Teacher, Conference Host Contact Karen Aucker, conference coordinator at: mska1@comcast.net Lock Haven is situated between the Allegheny Plateau Province and the Valley and Ridge Province on the shores of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, in proximity to the Allegheny Front structural escarpment. The history of the area is closely tied to the regional geology. The river was used for transporting lumber to the mills. Friday we will be learning more about the geology of the Marcellus Shale in our area and its impact on the economy, as we will be going to a Marcellus Shale drill site. Saturday s trip will be the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon with stops along the way in the Pine Creek Valley until we reach the upper rim of the canyon in the Allegheny Plateau. The maximum depth of the canyon is 1450 feet at Waterville. The depth at the state parks in the Plateau is more than 800 feet and the distance from rim to rim is approximately 4000 feet. Nearby Attractions: Woolrich Outlet Store is within minutes of Lock Haven. The founder John Rich sold yard goods and socks to logging camps from the back of a mule cart. In 1830, he built America s first woolen mill in Pennsylvania. Pine Creek Rails and Trails is a 64 mile former rail from Welsboro to Jersey Shore. If you love to bike this is a great place to travel along the creek and enjoy nature, even a great way to see the rocks up close. If you enjoy hiking then this is the place to visit. You are in the Wilds of PA. We have great hikes in the area, including the Mid State Trail (travels the length of PA, from MD to NY), Golden Eagle, and others. Kayakers you will not be left out, with the Susquehanna River and Pine Creek both being great places to float your boat. Pine Creek is known for its fly fishing. 1
