Page 2 Chapala Rotary Gave Us A Warm Welcome Our first stop was the Chapala Rotary club meeting Our second Rotary adventure to Chapala, Mexico was again a big success. Fourteen of our club members and spouses spent five days in perfect 80 degree weather. We traveled to the various locations the Chapala Rotary club has been involved with various humanitarian projects. There are plenty of needs in Mexico, so choosing the right ones to concentrate on is challenging. Luckily, the members of this club are extremely passionate and committed to seeing these projects succeed. Below are some we visited: Ojo de Agua is a small village of about 350 inhabitants who live in poverty with no running water. Chapala Rotary has started a water project where clean spring water from the nearby hillside is piped to holding tanks in the village. The second phase of the project will be to have the water piped throughout the village, and eventually into the small homes. The outdoor kitchen lacks running water Two village residents filleting fish for meals This structure holds two 9,000 liter containers of fresh water. Eventually water will be piped to the village homes.
Page 3 We visited the small town of Mezcala where the Chapala club has started a free lunch program for school children. These children often have almost nothing to eat on a daily basis so the Rotary club receives donations to purchase food for the kids after they leave school in the afternoon. The Rotary club built a small lunch facility for the kids to sit and eat. Many of our club members helped to serve the kids. Debbie was one of our club servers We ate lunch after the kids We also stopped at the orphanage we visited last year. As you recall the facility lacks any kind of playground equipment for these kids who spend most of their child life at this organization. Our club is still planning on getting a new playground for them in the upcoming year. Staff at the orphanage used our members to help measure the physical elements of each of the children. These measurements included height, weight, shoe size and head size. The staff will re-measure every few months and chart growth patterns for each kid. Jon checked their weight Ken measured their height Terry had their shoe size
Page 4 Dr. Marty checked their teeth While Diana Klesner played grandma We also visited the Have Hammer project. Have Hammer was Rotary project that teaches young men and women the woodworking and furniture making trade. If you recall, our club donated significant funding a few years ago for their HVAC system, so the students would not have to endure the wood dust while working. We learned that this project is now selfsustaining through their sales of completed projects, thus the Chapala Rotary club is no longer supporting the facility. During our visit, we also toured the Ciete Leguas (7 Leaves) Tequila factory in Atotonilco, we saw the Fiddler on the Roof play at the local Chapala Theater, attended the annual Chili Cook Off Festival in Ajijic, toured downtown Guadalajara, and had a wonderful catered dinner at the hillside home of one of the Chapala Rotary club members. We had a fantastic time and look forward to our next visit!
