S The South Ponte Vedra News January 2017 News Editor: Diane Henn dbpastore@bellsouth.net MONTHLY HAPPENINGS Monthly Social 2 nd Friday 6PM Exercise Class Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9AM Tai Chi Tuesdays & Thursdays 9AM Mah Jongg Tuesdays & Fridays 1PM Bridge Thursdays 6:30PM Book Club 3 rd Monday 7PM Bingo 3 rd Wednesday 7PM Ladies Who Lunch (on Holiday) Men Who Munch 3 rd Thursday 12PM Dear Neighbors, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The holiday season is in full swing, complete with traditional Christmas Specials on TV, last minute gift buying, visits from friends and family, and holiday traffic into and out of St. Augustine. I continue to be amazed at how many people come here to view the Festival of Lights. And during all of this, from the warmth of Sunny Florida we watch the Polar Vortex sweep across the nation. A special thanks goes out to the Social Committee for all their hard work as the year has drawn to a close. The 2 nd Friday Holiday Dinner in December was a huge success and attracted a record crowd of nearly 85 people. Our clubhouse was beautifully decorated with new Christmas lights and the many festive wreaths that are for sale and hang on the walls. The Social Committee provided all the entrees, while appetizers and desserts were supplied by our members. Complete with Holiday Carol Singing, a grand time was had by all and the plumbing held! The next day, for those that made the cut off list, the evening was filled with a Holiday Harbor Boat Ride and viewing of the Lighted Boat Parade from the water. The breezy but clear evening was complemented by both appetizers and libations made possible by the Social Committee. Having never seen the Boat Parade before, I could not help but be impressed with the amount of preparation and energy that goes into the various boat decorations. Quite a tradition for our relatively small community. For those in attendance at the December Holiday Dinner, you saw us launch our first 50/50 Fundraiser. Congrats go to Joy Casteel for being the first winner! This will become a regular part of our social gatherings. The proceeds go towards our newly established Reserve Fund. This fund is being set up to support our infrastructure (e.g. building), which requires ongoing yearly maintenance and which has been significantly impacted by the recent hurricane. You will be hearing more about this fund, its importance to our continued success, and our multi-pronged approach to raising the necessary money going forward. It is so good to see our building being used for multiple purposes. The exercisers walk, stretch, strength train and do Tai Chi. The Mah Jongg group continues to play to win, as do the Bridge players. The Book Club continues to read and discuss pertinent issues, while the Lending Library continues to be used by those donating and those borrowing. Let s not forget that the building is also rented for special occasions. For all these reasons, along with the upstairs apartment, we need to keep the building in good working order. For all of our Bingo playing members, the good news is we will begin playing again the third Wednesday in January. Please plan on joining us on January 18 th at 7 pm. You ve got to play to win! Its protagonist, Beatrice Nash, is a young woman who was recently orphaned. In the summer of 1914, she moves to Rye to escape the clutches of the oppressive relatives who administer her inheritance. Over the next few months, as she establishes herself as a Latin teacher, the war slowly drains the town of its vitality. Through Rye s decline, despite hardships and sadness, Beatrice undergoes a period of positive growth. On the evening of Beatrice s arrival in Rye, Agatha Kent and her nephews, Hugh Grange and Daniel Bookham, are at home awaiting their guest. Agatha is eager to meet the teacher she has championed in the face of the hiring committee s reluctance to hire a woman BINGO 3 rd Wednesday, 7PM January 18 th Please join us.
