Member of the Audit Bureau of Circulation There s nothing more enjoyable than a truly great holiday. It s a time to play, it s a time to relax and enjoy each other s company, and it s a time to teach your children about the things in life that really matter. I m talking about learning to swim or surf in the water rather than on a computer exploring the mountains, encountering all types of wildlife from a the tiniest lazy lizards to the majestic, but ferocious, male lion. Last time we were in the Kalahari, camped in a motorhome under a black sky filled with what looked like a mass of bright diamonds, a lion roared right outside the camp! I am pretty sure I could feel the motorhome vibrate as the deep, guttural sound reverberated through the silent night air. What an experience, made all the better by being tucked up in bed behind solid, protective walls! And you can do this all without Mom breaking a single perfectly painted fingernail, depending on the level of luxury that your holiday requires or what you want from your time away. Modern-day facilities allow for electricity in caravans, motorhomes and off-road trailers: you can have your own hot shower, toilet, central heating and/or air-conditioning, so you don t need to rough it. Your biggest advantage over non-campers is that you have your own bed to sleep in and, if you like, your favourite fluffy duvet to crawl under. For me, there s nothing better than falling asleep to the gentle sounds of rain pitter-pattering on the roof and waking up to the sweet smell of fresh moist air as a new dawn sheds light on a brand new landscape. This guide is designed to entice you to explore southern Africa with your closest friends and family. Not only does it list every known caravan resort in the various areas, but we have also included some great 4x4 trails, inspiring you to venture along roads less travelled. To assist you in your accommodation choices, we have highlighted certain resorts in full colour which invite you to utilise their establishments and facilities. Keep this handy book in your cubbyhole so that you can always find a resort in the area you are travelling to or through; use it to plan your trip in advance or do as some readers have done in the past and tick off each resort you visit, so that in the end you ve seen all 1038. Once you ve conquered the list, you ll have earned the right to say you ve seen southern Africa! Happy camping! PS If you find new resorts that you feel fellow campers need to know about, then please let us know. We also want to know how this guide has helped and benefited you throughout your travels.
