Snapshot of Algeria With a population of forty-two million people, political stability, and a growing economy, Algeria has emerged as one of the most attractive markets for U.S. trade and investment in the Middle East and North Africa. Algeria has strengthened its reputation in the global market with a responsible fiscal policy. The country has drastically reduced its external debtto-gdp ratio from 75.1% in 1995 to less than 1% in 2009. In 2015, the economy grew by 3.9% in real terms, while inflation has been tamed, recently stabilizing at around 5%. People s Democratic Republic of Algeria Capital: Algiers Area: 2,381,740 sq. km. Algeria is the largest country in Africa, and one of the richest on the continent in natural resources, and widely regarded as the industrial powerhouse of North Africa. With an economy historically dominated by the hydrocarbons sector, Algeria has made important strides in diversifying its economy, including sectors in agriculture and industry. Economic growth and political stability help to make Algeria one of the most reliable markets on the continent. Employment distribution by sector is increasingly diversified: Government (32%), agriculture (14%), industry (14%), and construction (10%). One of the main objectives of the Algerian government s diversification program is to jump-start the growth of non-energy sectors. 3
