The LESSONS OF SOLIDARITY Project is part of a three year initiative funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (www.snf. org) in order to assist the increasing needs that such Institutions are facing in view of the socioeconomic crisis in Greece. SNF is one of the world s leading international philanthropic organizations, making grants in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and medicine, and social welfare. The Foundation funds organizations and projects that exhibit strong leadership and sound management and are expected to achieve a broad, lasting and positive social impact. SNF also seeks actively to support projects that facilitate the formation of public-private partnerships as effective means for serving public welfare. ELIX will organize workcamps at the Institution PAMMAKARISTOS, which hosts around 150 children and young adults (3 to 30 years old) with various disabilities, mainly autism, intellectual disabilities, as well as youngsters with social and other problems. Children and the young adults, depending on the type of disorder, age and needs attend the kindergarten, the workshops (pottery, catering, decoration-crafts, weaving & daily living) or are in foster home (all day centre). Some of the therapies and activities offered in PAMMAKARISTOS are logo therapy, ergo therapy, music therapy and others. As the Institution was established in 1953, it has great needs with regard to the renovation of the buildings and the surrounding environment. WORK Volunteers participating in the workcamps will undertake activities in the surrounding land of the Institution such as deforestation, gardening landscape, planting and growing vegetables, herbs and trees in the garden, etc. This is of special importance to the Institution and the children and the young adults hosted there as a great part of the food served to them daily comes from this garden. Volunteers will also help in renovation work eg. painting walls, minor repairs. Volunteers will work from Monday till Friday. ACCOMMODATION & FOOD Volunteers will be accommodated in the facilities of the Institution PAMMAKARISTOS. The accommodation is basic but adequate. There are toilets and common showers as well as cooking facilities. Sleeping bag and a carry mat are necessary. Two volunteers of the group every day in shifts will be responsible for maintaining the accommodation place clean as well as for preparing the meals of the day for the whole group. Descripción del listado: Page 11 of 14 Fecha de impresión: LOCATION & LEISURE TIME The Institution PAMMAKARISTOS is located in the beautiful town of Nea-Makri that combines mountain and sea in a unique landscape (the Institution is situated 500 meters away from the town centre and just 700 meters away from the beach), in the district of Attica (North east from Athens). Nea-Makri is a sea side town of 15.000 inhabitants, about 1.15 hours from Athens down town, and is a popular summer holiday place for many Athenians. There is a bus connection between Nea-Makri and Athens (bus-station is just outside the Institution). Volunteers have many places around to visit, apart from Athens, such as the town of Marathonas (classic marathon), Rafina etc. In their free time, participants will have the opportunity to go for a swim and water sports; they may attend events organized during the period of their stay (concerts, festival, performances, etc.). Volunteers will discuss their free time activities with their camp leaders; together they are going to organize excursions and visits. REQUIREMENTS This is a special project that offers a unique opportunity to help in a practical way an Institution hosting and caring for disabled children in difficult times, while working with other young people from all over the world. Volunteers should feel comfortable being around children and young adults with disabilities. They should be reliable, mature and motivation driven. Good/reasonable English language skills are also required. It is also of great importance, as the workcamps take place within the Institution facilities, that all volunteers pay particular attention to their behavior: we absolutely don't want to interrupt the activities and daily schedule of the Institution that are designed to address the children s special needs for a safe and calm environment. SNF also seeks actively to support projects that facilitate the formation of public-private partnerships as effective means for serving public welfare. In the framework of the project LESSONS OF SOLIDARITY ELIX will organize 3 workcamps at the Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre for children and people with disabilities KAAPAA SHISTOU, which is part of one of the oldest public welfare organization under the Greek Ministry of Labour, Social Insurance and Welfare. The Centre hosts around 3 children, teenagers, youngsters and adults ranging from 11 to 48 years old with serious and multiple disabilities, suffering mostly from mental retardation and/or physical disabilities, autism and other serious forms of intellectual disabilities. The Centre provides mainly rehabilitation work, training in life tasks such as personal hygiene, psychological and social support as well as therapies and activities that help them to reach their highest potential. As a public institution KAAPAA SHISTOU is one of the welfare organizations in Greece that has been seriously affected by the financial crisis and the heavy budget cuts. As a result KAAPAA SHISTOU has great needs with regard to the renovation of its facilities as well as the surrounding environment. WORK Volunteers participating in the 3 workcamps will undertake mainly renovation activities - both at the exterior and the interior of the facilities: such as painting rooms and walls, etc. and activities in the surrounding land of the Institution. Volunteers will work from Monday till Friday. ACCOMMODATION & FOOD Volunteers will be accommodated in the facilities of the Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre KAAPAA SHISTOU.
