SUGGESTED ITINERARIES These are some suggested itineraries which we can follow if the weather permits and don t take them as standard routs. One-week in the Saronic Gulf Day 1: Saturday Kalamaki-Egina 18NM Day 2: Sunday Egina-Epidavros 14NM Day 3: Monday Epidavros-Poros 20NM Day 4: Tuesday Poros-Dokos 22NM Day 5: Wednesday Dokos-Idra 7NM Day 6: Thursday Idra-Perdika (Egina) 24NM Day 7: Friday Perdika-Kalamaki 22NM One-week in the Saronic-North Cyclades Day 1: Saturday Kalamaki-Sounio 23NM Day 2: Monday Sounio-Kea 15NM Day 3: Tuesday Kea-Kythnos 21NM Day 4: Wednesday Kythnos-Idra 45NM Day 5: Thursday Idra-Poros 14NM Day 6: Friday Poros-Egina 17NM Day 7: Saturday Egina-Kalamaki 18NM EGINA (Aigina): This island has a picturesque harbour with its colorful fishing kaiques is built on top of the foundations of the ancient harbour. The island's history dates back to the 6th century B.C. where evidence of this is given by a Doric temple which was dedicated to the god Apollo. A better preserved example of the island's ancient history is the 5th century B.C. temple of Aphaia. The museum in the main town contains interesting finds from this temple. More recent historic monuments of the island can be seen in its Government House when Egina was the first capital of modern Greece. The island is blessed with a good road network and its frequent connections by ferry or hydrofoil to the mainland make it a popular island for quick, short stops. Local travel on the island is also facilitated by numerous taxis and bus service but also horse-drawn carriage, for the romantic at heart! Other area of interest is Agia Marina, which has the largest beaches, the lovely fishing village of Perdika and of course a visit must be made to the monastery where the patron Saint of the island is buried - St. Nekterios. Egina is also very well-known for its pistachio trees which abound on the island and considered to be the best in the world. 6

POROS: Directly opposite Galata in the Peloponnese, lies the island of Poros. Visitors to this island arrive at its bustling harbour full of cafes, bars and restaurants. The island has 2 lovely beaches at Askeli and Neorio. At Neorio, one of the best sunsets can be viewed where the visitor has the chance to see the "Kimomeni" or the "sleeping woman" which is the silhouette of the hills outlined by the setting sun, and is in the form of a woman lying down. The famous orator Demosthenes sought refuge on Poros and it is here that he poisoned himself. HYDRA: Hydra is an island that has been proclaimed a landmark preservation area which has as a result forbidden the use of cars. It is a truly unique island and this can be seen in its traditional architecture and unspoilt local colour. This island is loved by artists and its artistic past is made alive by the establishment of a branch of the Athens School of Fine Arts operating from the Tombazi Mansion overlooking the port. The deep-rooted naval past of this island can be seen by the cannons in front of the little harbour, the 19th century mansions which were owned by sea captains, made this island famous the world over, and, is also the home of the Merchant Navy Officers' Training School. Hydra has good beaches at Kaminia, Molo, Palamida and Bisti. Not to be missed is a boat ride around the island to see the natural beauties of this island. SPETSES: Lying at the southern extreme of the Saronic Gulf is the pine-clad island of Spetses. The island is known for its courtyards and squares where naval and mythological scenes are depicted in mosaics made from grey, black and white pebbles. Spetses was made well known by the 1821 war heroine, Bouboulina, who was born on this island and whose house is now a national monument. The island's natural beauties make it ideal for walks and rides by horse-drawn carriages. Being a popular island and a hotspot for Athenians, bars, discos and nightlife abound. The beaches of Costa, Agios Emilianos and Hinitsa are all equipped with modern hotels and promise carefree holidays. 7

Here are other suggested itineraries: Two weeks North Cyclades-Saronic Gulf Saturday Kalamaki-Sounio 23NM Sunday Sounio-Kea 15NM Monday Kea-Syros 36NM Tuesday Syros-Mykonos 20NM Wednesday Mykonos-Paros 29NM Thursday Paros-Naxos 19NM Friday Naxos-Ios 27NM Saturday Ios-Sifnos 30NM Sunday Sifnos-Serifos 15NM Monday Serifos-Kythnos 26NM Tuesday Kythnos-Idra 45NM Wednesday Idra-Dokos 7NM Thursday Dokos-Poros 22NM Friday Poros-Kalamaki 28NM Saturday Check out at 09.00 This island group in the Aegean - The Cyclades. An imaginary circle centered on Delos washed by sunshine and breathing the sea breeze. One of the most important Mediterranean civilizations was born here, the Cycladic. It is also probable that the lost continent Atlantis was around here. Calm, crystal clear water, bright sky, sun, and an austere architecture on naked rock, the Cyclades are filled with light and sunshine. The climate is dry and healthy, with mild winters and cool summers, thanks to the beneficial meltemia (strong North winds). One week North- Cyclades Saturday Kalamaki-Sounio 23NM Sunday Sounio-Kea 15NM Monday Kea-Syros 36NM Tuesday Syros-Paros 26NM Wednesday Paros-Serifos 33NM Thursday Serifos-Kythnos 28NM Friday Kythnos-Kalamaki 48NM Saturday Check out at 09.00 All in all there are 17 islands which comprise the Cyclades, most of which are inhabited and have a sound tourism infrastructure. Mykonos is world-famous. It is no coincidence that this, the most cosmopolitan of all Greek islands, attracts so many visitors from all over the globe. Although barren and full of windmills, attracting world renowned socialites, intellectuals and artists. From its harbour, full of small fishing boats bobbing side-by-side with luxurious yachts, one can walk through narrow white-washed alleys; see dazzling white cubed-shaped houses with brightly painted wooden doors and windows, plus a myriad of tiny blue-domed churches. Famous for its zany nightlife, Mykonos has also much to offer those searching for the cultural history of the island. 8

MYKONOS: In Mykonos, the church of paraportiani is considered to be an architectural masterpiece. The archaeological museum exhibits some very interesting finds, most of which were excavated from the "necropolis" or dead city on the little islet of RINEIA. A visit to the Museum of popular art is also something not to be missed. About the rest, the overall sense is of being inside a film set. Great night life and Summer parties in the beach. Some years, very windy during the months of July and August. PAROS: In recent years has developed into a modern tourist centre and is one of the few Cycladic islands filled with gently undulating hills which contain the famous Parian marble - the marble with which the Acropolis was built. The picturesque approach to the island is via the town of Parikia, the main port and capital of the island, built on the site of the ancient city. A ruined Venetian castle situated in the present market place, adds to the colour of Parikia, with its narrow cobblepaved streets, white-washed houses decorated with pots of colorful geraniums and fragrant basil. One of the most impressive and respected shrines of Byzantine architecture can be found in the form of the Holy Church of Ekatondapiliani, or roughly translated means the church of 100 doors. Dedicated to the Virgin, Parikia becomes the Mecca of thousands of worshippers every year on the 15 August. From Parikia we continue on to one of the most graphic villages in the Cycladic islands - Naoussa - renowned for its picturesque port full of fishing boats, narrow winding lanes and the ever-present white-washed houses. Directly opposite, is the beach of Kolimbithres where awesome rocks produce a strange "moon" like atmosphere, surrounded by fine golden sand. A beautiful traditional village and the old capital of the island is Lefkes - a place worth visiting for its ceramics and handicrafts. The southern part of the island is dominated by kilometers of sandy beaches and romantic undiscovered coves. For the windsurfing enthusiast, there are international events held every year in the month of August at Chyssi Akti or Golden Beach which true to its word, consists of 1 kilometer of fine golden sand. 9

NAXOS: Naxos is the largest of the Cycladic islands and the most fertile. The town of Naxos or Hora is built in amphitheatrical fashion on a side of a hill. Throughout the island lies evidence of the island's long history. There is the temple of Apollo and a huge gateway on the tiny islet of Palatia which is linked to the main land by a causeway. There are many interesting monuments including fine examples of Byzantine churches and the remains of a Mycenaean settlement at Grotta. Not far from Apollonas, a lovely seaside village is an ancient marble quarry at the entrance to which lies a huge half-finished Kouros dating from the 6th century B.C. Among the other attractions of Naxos are lovely sandy beaches in Kastraki, Vigla and Agios Giorgios. SANTORINI: The environment of this island is totally different from any of the other Cycladic islands. Often referred to as the "Prehistoric Pompeii of the Aegean" due to the geological changes which transformed this island. A volcanic explosion which took place 3500 years ago is believed to have been responsible for the annihilation of the Minoan civilization in Crete, which lies 70 miles southwards. It is also believed that Santorini or Thira as the locals call it is part of the legendary lost continent of Atlantis which disappeared when the volcano erupted. Whatever might be believed, Santorini is a minefield of archaeological interest featuring ancient Thira and Akrotiri with remains of its Minoan town. The island is renowned for its unique views and colorful sunsets. Fira is the island's capital located at an altitude of 900ft, and can be reached by donkey, the easy funicular railway, or for the physically fit, climbing the 566 steeps! The entire island is filled with captivating churches, clusters of houses with its white-washed walls and lively market places. The island's nightlife is enough to make even the larger, cosmopolitan cities of Europe envious! 10

SIROS: The coastline is indented with inlets of all sizes between capes. There are two large bays, of Ermoupoli to the east and Foinikas to the west. Ermoupoli, "Queen of the Cyclades", is the capital and main harbour of Siros. It is also without doubt the capital of all Cyclades. Ermoupoli stands on a naturally amphitheatrical site, with neo-classical buildings, old mansions and white houses in the island style cascading down to the harbour. Among the most important buildings are the Town Hall and the Apollo Municipal Theater, which is a copy in miniature of La Scala, Milan. Ano Siros (upper Siros) with its walls, narrow lanes and arches, has kept much of its medieval character. The steep streets and countless steps lend the town the charm of a bygone age. SERIFOS: Serifos is an island with a quaint beauty, preserving at the same time the traditional Aegean character. The whole island is a balcony to the northwest all blue and sunny Aegean. It is a true challenge for vacations, new experiences and unforgettably unique moments. What will surprise every visitor is that Serifos has a 12 km of those are sandy beaches. The capital of the island, Hora, is built on a vertical rock creating an amazing picture with its small white houses crawling up towards the top of the castle and its wind mills gloriously watching the port. The most famous and remarkable places we propose for your visit or stay is Koutalas, Megalo Livadi, Panagia, Livadakia, Giannis, Platis Gialos, Sikamia, Agios Sostis, et cetera.. One important place is the church of Agios Ioannis Theologos (St. John) which is carved on a rock, on top of the ruins of the ancient temple of Athena (Minerva). You will love Serifos as soon as you visit, because its uniqueness and its charm will fascinate you. 11

KEA: (Tzia) is very close to Athens and offers relaxing vacations and pristine beaches. The picture of the island that remains is of little valleys with vineyards and orchards between mountainous masses, leading to idyllic coves. One and two storey houses with tiled roofs, stone-paved alleyways, chapels, windmills, and monasteries, the most important of which is the Kastriani monastery. KITHNOS: The ground is high and rugged with green tufts of vine and fig scattered about. The shores are heavily indented and the island has radioactive springs with great curative powers. The churches are beautiful and are graced with fine wood-carvings and with icons painted by the Cycladian painter (1700) Skordilis. SIFNOS: A landscape broken up here and there by a gleaming white chapel is the first impression made on visitors as the ferry draws into the harbour. But this gives them no idea of the beauty spots waiting to be discovered inland, which together with the island's superb architecture, rank it among the jewels of the Aegean. 12

DODECANESE The Dodecanese are located south of Samos, and Fourni, east of the Cyclades, east of the coast of Asia Minor, and north-east of Crete. It is an enchanted world where the sun paints pictures and the sea gives life. The mild winters and refreshing summers give the Dodecanese one of the healthiest climates in the Mediterranean. The islands of the Dodecanese are engaged in a beauty contest, with no clear winner. And naturally, the strong sunlight and the beautiful sea are as present in Rhodes as they are throughout the Dodecanese, as they are throughout Greece. RHODES: The largest island in the group and also known as the island of the Sun. The capital, City of Rhodes, is like a valuable coin with two faces. One face, "heads", is the old town, a fairy-tale place surrounded by medieval walls and traversed by the Street of the Knights of St. John. On either side of the road is the old town with the "Inns", the Hospital of the Knights and the palace of the Grand Master. The other face, "tails", is the modern city with an intense nightlife, broad streets, beautiful buildings, large hotels, and hundreds of shops where anything can be found. The entire island is crammed with sights worth seeing, from the archaeological sites to the fabulous beaches, from the valley with the butterflies to the ruins of ancient Rhodes, from the Acropolis of Lindos to the archaeological sites at Kameiros (Kamiros) and Ialysos (lalissos). An island with important sights, such as the Blue Grotto, one of the most gorgeously coloured caves in Greece. -Come to sail next to the island of the Sun... 13

PATMOS: Called the Jerusalem of the Aegean. Here, in one of Patmo's many caves, St. John the Theologian had a vision of the Apocalypse. An imposing monastery devoted to the saint dominates the heights above the picturesque houses and mansions which appear to be 'hooked' to the roots of the monastery. The image the visitor will keep from Patmos will be completed by an excursion to its rocky coves and pleasant shores before passing over to the nearby islets of Fourni, Lipsi, and Agathonissi. Lipsi or Lipso is very attractive with enchanting beaches and scenic fish tavernas offering local wine. LEROS: A hilly island with deep green coves, idyllic valleys, indented shores and the imposing Frankish-Byzantine castle over the Hora. Grey, gold, and green, framed by the blue of the sea and the sky, are the colours composing portraits. KALIMNOS: golden beaches, and verdant valleys. The capital Pothia is built amphitheatrically with multi-coloured geometrically shaped houses, churches, and scenic roads. Beautiful areas with picturesque villages, radioactive springs, and idyllic spots for swimming, fishing, and relaxing holidays are everywhere. KOS: Splash of deep green located between Kalimnos and Nissiros. Among the thousands of impressive sights are the Asklepeion, the houses dating from the Roman era with the fabulous mosaics, the palace of the Knights of St. John, in the town of Kos, the early Christian churches with their noteworthy frescos. The island also has many villages famous for the charm, quiet fishing villages, and beaches, ranging from empty to full. The visitor will be impressed by the contrast formed by the white houses on Nissiros's grey volcanic soil, just before she ends up in one of the beautiful fishing villages for some quiet sea and sun. 14

TILOS: Is fine sand beaches, untouched nature, medieval castles, and a respect for the island's traditions. SIMI: You will know you are on Simi by the mountains and small valleys, wonderful coves, strong sense of tradition, and the monastery of the Archangel Michael with its Byzantine frescos. West of Rhodes lies a small mountainous island, Halki. A thousand songs pay tribute to this quiet place that is ideal for relaxing holidays, as well as for its lovely beaches with their charming fishing villages. Special places like the one you can see in the picture!
