2019 HARVARD ALUMNI TRAVELS DISCOVER LEARN CONNECT EXPLORE WATERWAYS OF THE TSARS Moscow to St. Petersburg Aboard Volga Dream With Harvard Study Leader James E. Salzman June 5 15, 2019

Study Leaders Church of the Transfiguration, Uglich, photo by Bob C Images (above). Front cover image: St. Basil s Cathedral, Moscow. Back cover image: The Kremlin, Moscow, photo by Pavel Kazachkov. Trip Sampling page image: Kizhy. Sail from Moscow into the heartland of Russia aboard the elegant Volga Dream. Stay at the Four Seasons for three nights in Moscow, where you will enter the Kremlin before public hours, go backstage at the Bolshoi, and discover the masterpieces in the Pushkin Museum and Tretyakov Galleries. Visit an open session of the Duma, or Russian Parliament (pending confirmation), and enjoy a cocktail at Spaso House, the home of the U.S. Ambassador. Then embark on a six-night voyage aboard Volga Dream to step ashore in Golden Ring towns few Americans have ever visited. Call at Uglich, founded a thousand years ago, to hear an a cappella choir inside a 15th-century church. Visit two medieval monasteries in Goritsy and explore the magical island of Kizhy. Enjoy stunning scenery as you cross Europe s largest freshwater lake to call at the village of Svirstroy and visit a resident s home before disembarking at St. Petersburg. Onboard classes in Russian language and cuisine will add to the pleasures of this voyage. An optional postlude is offered in St. Petersburg. Study Leader Jim Salzman is the Donald Bren Distinguished Professor of Environmental Law with joint appointments at UCLA Law School and the University of California, Santa Barbara, School of Environment. He teaches every year at the Harvard Law School during its Winter Term most recently as the Jeremiah Smith, Jr., Visiting Professor of Law. The first Harvard graduate to earn joint degrees in law and in engineering, he was awarded a Sheldon Fellowship upon graduation. One of the world s leading experts on drinking water, he regularly comments in the media on environmental issues. A popular lecturer, he was twice voted Professor of the Year by students at Duke University. His book, Drinking Water: A History, is in its second edition and has been featured in Scientific American, the Washington Post, The New York Times, and NPR s Weekend Edition. Activity Level 2: WHAT TO EXPECT This leisurely cruise is appropriate for travelers who are in good health and physically active. Often touring requires standing for extended periods of time as well as a moderate amount of walking, sometimes along uneven cobblestone streets, inclines, and up and down stairs. Comfortable walking shoes are essential! The temperatures during your stay in Moscow and St. Petersburg should range from the mid-50s to low 70s F. As the mornings and evenings tend to be slightly chilly, we suggest that you bring along a warm sweater and jacket. Light rain showers are not uncommon, so a lined raincoat and folding umbrella are suggested, though the ship will have umbrellas to loan as well. TO BOOK A TRIP, CALL 800-422-1636 OR VISIT ALUMNI.HARVARD.EDU/TRAVEL Blini

B,L,D MONDAY, JUNE 10 Uglich Enjoy a leisurely morning cruise to Uglich, whose medieval buildings loom above a sharp bend in the river. Tonight, join the captain for a welcome reception and dinner.
