Danube River Basin Surface area: 800,000 km 2 Population: 80,000,000 About 95% of Serbia s territory falls within the Danube River Basin.

IMPLEMENTATION OF EU DIRECTIVES Harmonization of national legislation with water related EU directives is a complex and long lasting process The harmonization of legislation which is defining responsibilities of several ministries, as well as adoption of new ones is finished to a high extend Financial aspect of EU directives implementation is an additional problem

IMPLEMENTATION OF WFD IN SERBIA Active involvement in preparation, adoption and implementation of: Danube River Basin Management Plan adopted Integrated Tisza River Basin Management Plan - adopted Sava River Basin Management Plan in final stage, adoption is expected in 2013 Environmental Approximation Strategy (2012)

TRANSPOSITION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF UWWTD IN SERBIA Preparation and adoption: Implementation plan for the UWWTD (EAS) working document Water pollution protection Plan (Article 94 WL) Classification of surface and groundwaters bodies shall be integreted part of the Plan the Plan shall be consistent wit the Water Management Strategy

PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY Current status: Generally good in most cities. Certain areas do not have adequate access to water supply. Drinking water quality issues: a large portion of Vojvodina, the Morava River Valley, parts of Central Serbia, and several small municipalities. Groundwater is over-exploited in Vojvodina. Unbilled water/distribution and network losses exceed acceptable levels. Required activities: Construction of a number of regional water supply systems (Banat, West Bačka, Rzav, Selova, etc.). Upgrading of maintenance of existing groundwater sources. Reduction in water supply system losses. Required funds: 2 billion

URBAN WASTEWATER COLLECTION AND PROTECTION OF WATER FROM POLLUTION Current status: Least developed segment of the water sector. Low percentage of polluters with wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Low percentage of existing Comunal WWTPs which are operational. Insufficiently developed public sewerage systems (50% of the population connected). Solid waste dominantly disposed at undeveloped dumpsites. Requried activities: Extension of sewer networks. Prioritized construction of WWTPs for all communities larger than 2000 PE, taking in to acount afordability. Required funds: 5 billion.

URBAN WASTEWATER COLLECTION AND TREATMENT Based on the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (91/271/EC), 509 communities with emission levels in excess of 2000 PE have been identified.. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) available in 33 cities and towns. Priorities based on the Danube River Basin Management Plan:. Settlements in sensitive areas 10. Large settlements on small watercourses. Large settlements on large watercourses (Belgrade, Novi Sad...)
