February 2007 Vol #92 Issue #2 www.poulsbosonsofnorway.com President s Message: The New Year has arrived and Old Man Winter is upon us with a vengeance. The new Board for 2007 was installed during a lull in the weather we sincerely appreciate the confidence that you place in us and I hope that we can live up to your expectations. I want to thank the outgoing Board for their service and perseverance during the ups and downs of the year. Congratulations to Bill Fosmoe and Julie Swenson, our Man and Woman of the Year for 2006. They were instrumental in our financial accounting system conversion to QuickBooks. A special congratulations to Stan Overby who was awarded the King Harald V Humanitarian Award for his lifetime service to the Sons of Norway and our Lodge. Stan is one of those unique individuals in our Lodge whose efforts and dedication stand above the crowd. I would be remiss if I didn t recognize the outstanding performance of our Lodge Manager, Adele Heinrich, whose administrative and management skills along with her aggressive, can-do attitude in the management of the Lodge have been a pleasure to witness. I believe that you have an outstanding group in the Board this year and I am confident that they will work for the best interests of the Lodge and ensure that we continue and improve upon our varied cultural, youth, sports and social programs. As you can see in the Måken the Crab Feed and St. Patrick s are back and I am hopeful that all our programs will continue to grow. As always, the programs and services of our Lodge don t happen by themselves. It is only through the efforts of volunteers that anything happens. Additional volunteers are always needed. Please volunteer and participate in your Lodge not only by attending events, but in volunteer service. You will enjoy both. It is amazing what can be accomplished when we work together for the common good. In this regard, I ask that each of us look within ourselves and accept that we are not all the same, but that we have individual beliefs, priorities, loyalties and prejudices, but that in the end we are all brothers and sisters in this great organization and that we should be able to get along and work together for the mutual benefit of both ourselves and our order. Until next time Wade Moncrief Lodge Meeting Highlights The Leikarringen dancers, accompanied by Bob Moseng on violin entertained the members. Stan Overby was bestowed with the King Harald Medal and Lifetime Achievement Award. Bill Fosmoe was given the Man of the Year award for his extensive help to the Lodge with the Quickbooks accounting system. Julie Swenson was named Woman of the Year for her work as treasurer during the change to Quickbooks. Cultural Director Grace Overby presented Hannah Graves with her folk dance cultural award. Youth Director Joanne Graves announced that in February the Leikarringen would dance at schools and nursing homes in Victoria, B.C.. Ladies Club President reported that $19,500 had been donated to the Lodge in 2006, raised from activities generated by the Club. New Officers were installed with Bill Fosmoe officiating. All officers are listed in the December Måken with the exception of Foundation Director Phil Swenson. President Wade Moncrief took over the gavel, thanking the last year s board for their hard work and stating there was still work to be done. He appointed a membership committee of VP Fred Weatherford, Sec. Barb Mitchusson and Fin. Sec. Kathy Moncrief. Respectfully submitted, Barb Mitchusson Antarctica Presentation Wade Moncrief will present a slide show and talk on Antarctica at 7 PM on Thursday, March 8 th in the Viking Room. Wade made three trips to Antarctica while in the Coast Guard and will share his photos and experiences. Members and their guests are invited. Coffee and dessert will be served. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Lodge Scholarship Fund

Fastelavn (shrove tide) the 7 th Sunday before Easter, Feb 18 th, signals the coming of Easter in Norway. In the olden days, people covered themselves with ashes and smeared it through their hair. The ashes remained for six weeks until Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter, when they cleaned up. Shrove tide is celebrated with Fastelaunboller, Shrovetide buns, sweet buns, sometimes with raisins divided in half and filled with sweetened whipped cream. Copies of this recipe will be on tables on both floors of the lodge Leikarringen Performances March 3 - Leikarringen youth folk dancers will be hosting a benefit performance for the Poulsbo Historical Society. Early Bird games begin at 6:00, followed by our regular games and jackpots at 6:30. Bingo at the Sons is a family event where people look forward to seeing and being with their friends. This year bingo has contributed $24,500 to our Lodge s treasury. In addition to our profits from the games, the Lodge is receiving money from our sales of hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, salad, popcorn, chips, candy, and beverages that are sold each session. We need more volunteers to help on Wednesday evenings. Please let Adele know if you would like to volunteer once a month either with bingo or selling food at our bingo sessions. We hope more players will join us on Wednesday evenings for a time of fun and friendship, and to support our Lodge. We look forward to seeing you there! Lodge activities cancellation policy: The following policy was adopted in 2004. North Kitsap School District closings are announced on the Seattle TV and radio stations and on their website (www.nksd.wednet.edu). All Lodge activities, including evening activities, shall automatically be canceled on days the Poulsbo public schools are closed due to inclement weather. However, this policy does not apply to activities of other entities utilizing Lodge facilities, and all Lodge volunteers and employees who are expected to be at the lodge for such activities shall try to be at the lodge unless informed otherwise by the other entity or the Lodge representative responsible for the activity. The Lodge Administrator shall try to record a voice mail greeting that informs callers of the status of activities at the lodge on days the Poulsbo public schools are closed due to inclement weather

EDITORS NOTE TO ALL RECIPIENTS OF THE Måken: In keeping with the decision of the lodge board of directors, April Måken will be the last sent to all members UNLESS we receive a notification from you via e-mail, letter, fax, phone call, or personal notification to the lodge or editor. The lodge spends over $3,000.00/year on mail that we (the lodge) could save, and we note the advantages of e-mail: COLOR (vice black and white), faster, cheaper, ability to print your own size Måken for those of you that want larger size due to vision impairment, and the ability to make a larger Måken with more information that is in a more user-friendly format. Please consider getting the Måken by e-mail. Additionally if you would like to pick up a copy at the lodge vice having one mailed to you there will be extra copies available at the lodge. If you choose to get your Måken by U.S. mail, we will of course make sure that still happens. Thank you!
