A guide to enjoy the city CASABLANCA 8

About Casablanca Casablanca, Morocco s commercial centre, tends to come lower down on the tourism list, behind the likes of Marrakech and Rabat; however the city s French colonial legacy, entwined with the traditional Arab culture, ensures there s lots of diverse things to do and see. Alongside the art deco buildings, and old stone medina alleys, visitors can find museums, palaces, and the second largest mosque in the world. The history of the city of Casablanca in Morocco has been one of many political and cultural changes. At different times it has been governed by Berber, Roman, Arab, Portuguese, Spanish, French, British, and Moroccan regimes. It has had an important position in the region as a port city, making it valuable to a series of conquerors during its early history. The original Berber name, Anfa (meaning: "hill" in English), was used by the locals, and Berber-speaking, city dwellers until the French occupation army entered the city in 1907 and adopted the Spanish name, Casablanca. "Anfa" now refers to the original old city quarters of Casablanca. The city is now developing a tourism industry. Casablanca has become the economic and business capital of Morocco, while Rabat is the political capital. Located in the central-western part of Morocco bordering the Atlantic Ocean, Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco. It is also the largest city in the Maghreb, as well as one of the largest and most important cities in Africa, both economically and demographically. The must-see H A S S A N 2 M O S Q U E Completed in 1993 and located on a platform overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the iconic Hassan II Mosque is the secondlargest mosque in the world, and one of few open to non-muslims (through selected guided tour opportunities lasting around an hour each). The mosque, which can accommodate up to 25,000 worshipers, offers Muslims the chance to pray on a glass floor, giving the unique feeling of praying directly over the sea. Everyone is welcome to admire the beautiful piece of architecture at any time from the spacious courtyard, which alone can accommodate a further 80,000 people. Source: www.theculturetrip.com T H E C O R N I C H E As peaceful during the day as it is lively during the night, the Corniche is a must-see for anyone discovering Casablanca. An ideal place for loitering as well as for entertainment, you will find at the Corniche all the ingredients to have a good time: several kilometers of cafés, restaurants, sports centers, movie theaters and shopping centers. During your stay, treat yourself to some fresh air by going for a stroll or an early morning jog, directed by the rhythm of the sound of the waves, and the ocean as far as the eyes can see. At night, dancing takes over, to the rhythm of world music. Source: www.wecasablanca.com 10

T H E O L D M E D I N A Unlike in many Moroccan cities, the old part of town is surprisingly easy to pass by in Casablanca. There is the temptation to head straight out to the seaside to visit the Hassan II Mosque and beach area, however discovering the charm hidden behind the old city walls is a must on any trip to a Moroccan city. With its typical labyrinth style character, getting lost is undoubtedly easy, but with a bit of caution this can be a hidden beauty in itself. Indeed, it poses little risk as you ll soon find yourself at one end or the other of the old quarters. Experiencing the pace of daily life, with children running in the narrow streets and men smoking in cafés, you can join the shoppers in their search for traditional treasures, and find the little sights buried in the medina, such as the Berber Mosque. Source: www.theculturetrip.com Q U A R T I E R H A B O U S The Habous neighborhood: calm, colorful, magical. A perfect place for those who love Moroccan authenticity. A real historical gem, not far from the majestic Royal Palace, the Habous neighborhood provides full immersion into the Casablanca of the past, rich with history and tradition. In its narrow alleys, bordered with shops and bazars, time seems to have frozen. With its typically Moroccan architecture, the Habous neighborhood was meant to accommodate the families of traders from various regions of Morocco. Hence, the new medina as we call it, was built to fully meet the style of a traditional medina, by combining Moroccan tradition and modern, town planning rules. This is the ideal place to stock up on babouches, gandoras, tunics, belts, bags, olives, spieces The colors are bright, the smell of leather is everywhere. Shopping addresses M O R O C C O M A L L As the biggest mall in Africa, Morocco Mall has various brands that fit a range of budgets from affordable H&M and Zara to the luxurious Gucci and Luis Vuitton. You may also take a shopping break and marvel at the giant aquarium reminiscent of the Dubai Mall. Enjoy a food trip too as their restaurants range from burgers, sushi, and local cuisine. Morocco Mall truly has it all. A N F A P L A C E S H O P P I N G C E N T E R Satisfy your shopping cravings at Anfaplace Shopping Center that features local brand, American brands, and a wide selection of restaurants. The mall is not too big that you would be tired walking around but big enough for a pleasant shopping experience. One exit leads you straight to the beach where you can unwind after shopping. T H E O L D M E D I N A While technically known as a landmark rather than a market, the streets in the area have an array of shops competing for your attention. A variety of traditional goods awaits you like colorful Arabian carpets and leather products among other iconic items. It can almost be said you haven t gone to Casablanca without experiencing these markets. Get ready to beat your sales man s sales talk as most items do not have a price tag as they are meant to be haggled with for the best possible price. Source : www.trip-n-travel.com 12
