In 1229 Queen Ermangarde, the widow of William the Lion and mother of Alexander II, invited the Cistercians at Melrose Abbey to set up a daughter house at Balmerino. They chose this location on the north Fife coast because of its climate and for its religious connections. The Abbey suffered during the reformation and sadly not much of it stands today. The houses are "B" listed Location 6 miles to the east of Balmerino lies the village of Newport on Tay, which provides a range of daily services including Primary School, Post Office and local shopping. The city of discovery, Dundee, via the Tay Bridge has an extensive range of High Street shopping, retail parks, supermarkets, restaurants and recreational amenities. A main line rail station and airport with daily flights to London City Airport. The popular town of St Andrews is steeped in history and is the home of the British Open, lies 12 miles to the east and is popular for boutique shopping, the University, championship golf, and being the access point to the East Neuk of Fife. This part of Fife offers a wide range of outdoor activities, and is particularly popular for golf, with a good number of courses in the area. There are many coastal walks and beaches nearby. Directions From Dundee take the A92 over the Tay Bridge, continue on this road passing over the Forgan roundabout. Continuing to the next roundabout, taking the third exit signposted Wormit. Continue on this road for approximately 2 miles and then turn right towards Wormit, then immediately left signposted Balmerino. Continue on this road for approx 2.5 miles and then turn right into the village of Balmerino. Approx 150 m on the right is Abbey Steadings. Services Mains electricity, water and drainage.
