ASC e-news Electronic news from the Adelaide Soaring Club Number 13/2017 15th June, 2016 Welcome to the latest edition of the ASC e-news. ASC FOUNDING MEMBER HONOURED In the Queen s Birthday Honours list this year ASC Life Member Alan Killmier was recognised for his pioneering role and his service to aviation by the award of the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) awarded for service worthy of particular recognition. Alan was one of that small band of dedicated enthusiasts who got together in 1944 to found the club which became Adelaide Soaring Club, and which has evolved and developed into the organisation we know today. Alan - with among others his brothers Ray and Peter took part in building the aircraft and facilities, negotiating the many things necessary to establish flying sites, and in managing the club. He was an instructor, Committee member and President, and is one of the club s Life Members. You can read the official OAM citation by going to: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/2016-south-australian-queens-birthdayhonours/news-story/9b371d0ef99b20f396779c3a06f01f94 On behalf of all ASC members - congratulations Alan Killmier OAM from all of us, we owe you a great deal. From our President Most would be aware that Paul Brown has recently resigned from the ASC Committee and from his role as Club Safety Officer. Increased work commitments has led to Paul s decision. Over the years Paul has made a highly valuable contribution to the Club, not only by serving on Committee, where until this year he was Vice President, but also in the demanding role as our Club Safety Officer. Paul has made a huge contribution to the implementation and development of our current Safety Management System. The good news is that Paul isn t leaving the Club, he will remain a member and will continue to contribute in his role as a LSA flying instructor. On behalf of the ASC I would like to thank Paul for his contribution. Some more good news: The Committee has appointed Scott Crew to fill the casual vacancy created by Paul s resignation. As most would know, Scott is an extremely enthusiastic individual who has already brought some new ideas and expertise to our Club. I m sure that Scott will continue to demonstrate his value to the Club by serving on Committee.

Andrew Wright has accepted the position of Club Safety Officer. Andrew has a very, very long association with the ASC and knows our operation intimately gliding and LSA. He has a 30 year background in professional safety management and I feel very confident that he will quickly feel at home in this demanding role. Thanks to Scott and Andrew for volunteering their expertise for the benefit of us all. Safe Flying, Steve. 0438 409 928 ASC SAFETY NEWS Of late there has been some discussion regarding drone activity and how that might affect our operations at Gawler. Civil Aviation Safety Regulation part 101 (CASR 101) consolidates all the rules applicable to operation of drones (RPA: Remotely Piloted Aircraft). If you see a drone operating near the Gawler airfield, please report it as you would any other safety related hazard or incident. Report forms are available in the briefing office on the Safety Notice Board. REMEMBER: Please report all safety related hazards &/or incidents. Andrew Wright, Club Safety Officer. Black Springs Photos Congratulations on going solo Thank you all so much for the excellent instructions and help on my way up. It is really great to stay here and be flying every day. Looking forward to coming back again and seeing you soon! Cheers! Best regards, David Tang

Update to events calendar A new gliding event has been added to the ASC Events Calendar SA Coaching Week from 27-31 December 2016. If you want to take a club-owned glider to this very worthwhile event (being held this year at Waikerie) see Brenton Swart, Chair of the ASC Glider Ops Group. See the ASC events calendar below for this and other upcoming events. Tax deductable donations A reminder if you would like to make a tax-deductable donation to help young people learn to glide you need to do it by 23 June to allow for processing before the cut-off date. Call the ASC office for details. Got any friends? AGM 201 Make sure you keep the 27th August free for 2016 AGM. A Busy Calandar June 2016 June 11-13: ASC Black Springs slope soaring expedition June 25: Seminar & training session on OzRunways Gawler clubhouse July 2016 16-24 July: ASC Flinders expedition at Rawnsley Park August 2016 27 August: ASC AGM and Presentation Dinner in the clubhouse

6-10 October: Oz-Kosh (formerly Ausfly) October 2106 December 2106 27-31 December: SA Coaching Week at Waikerie ASC on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adelaidesoaring?fref=ts Please shut the gate Please remember to shut the gate if you are the last person leaving the airfield of an evening. Some reminders about the limitations that have been placed on aeroplanes with Jabiru engines The new instrument commences 1st July, 2015 and expires 30th June, 2016, unless cancelled by CASA at an earlier date. It lists the same limitations as the earlier instrument with the exception that a disclaimer to be signed by students and passengers now has a life of 3 months, an increase from the 28 days listed in the earlier instrument. VFR only A/craft flown so as to be able to glide clear of populous area and always 1,000 above ground unless taking off or landing Passengers & Trainee pilots flying solo need to sign a statement saying they are aware of & accept the risks of an engine failure Trainee pilots must have successfully completed engine failure exercises (in the previous 2 hours flying or previous 7 days whichever is the most recent) before solo flying At Gawler the limitations will have an effect on runway use where 23 and 31 have the best options for forced landings after take-off. The full runway length must always be used for take-offs on ALL runways. On 05 and 13. No touch and goes by students unless they are flying under the direct supervision of an instructor and there is a significant headwind component. Pilots are to commence gentle climbing turns when safe after take-off (500 ) to stay clear of populous areas with a view to using a cross strip or suitable forced landing area (non-populous) in case of a power loss. Depending on wind conditions, circuit traffic and gliding activity, Pilots can consider using runways 23 and 31 for taking off, even with a crosswind that is within limits, and landing on 13 and 05. Appropriate radio use under these circumstances is essential as a safe operation is always paramount. If Pilots have any doubt when considering their options, DISCUSS THEM WITH AN INSTRUCTOR. And a reminder that you need to have a check flight if you haven t flown in a month. OUR EMAIL LISTS - A reminder of their purpose ascannounce - This site is for conveying official information within the club. Only officials of the club can post items on this list. Typically only one email per week is posted on this site so it is not a problem in terms of overloading anyone's email system.
