Roses Café is relatively new in Mittagong, a branch of the long established Roses in Goulburn. Jenny and I went there very soon after it opened, and I admit I had some concerns about their ability to deal efficiently with the numbers on our run, but as it turned out, I needn t have worried. A typically diverse group of cars at the start.
Page 2 of 15 Nice one. The correct attire for a gentleman MG Midget driver! The line-up at Burradoo again featured a great, diverse collection of cars. The star car of the day was an MG Midget belonging to new member on the day Kurt Blasé. He told us the car had been in the family for a long time, but it was in immaculate condition. Kurt had selected driving attire that really complimented the car, especially if you are a retired RAF officer or have memories of a very early era of driving automobiles. The usual ingredients were still in evidence a good selection of MGs and the German contingent of Mercedes and Volkswagen with a Porsche thrown in for good measure. My Mini was not among them it blew a head gasket coming up Barrengarry after our last run. Had to slum it in luxury in Jenny s BMW instead!
Page 3 of 15 Many different ways of having fun!
Page 4 of 15 So off we went, via Fitzroy Falls, Robertson, Tourist Road and Old South Road to reach Mittagong. The group managed to stay together throughout the drive and arrived at Roses almost exactly on time. A couple of Germany s best products.
Page 5 of 15 Our arrival certainly filled Roses to capacity, but it didn t seem to faze the hard working ladies there at all. In short order, some very tasty food appeared. (It helped a bit that they didn t have to do a lot of cooking of items on the menu my fish and chips were as much as required). Also I must note that our table was served by the most polite young waitress that I think I ve yet encountered. People like that make a lot of difference to the day. Phil O
Page 6 of 15 To B or to B Reborn Video I don t intend to have video links in the Newsletter as a matter of course, but owners of our dominant car model the MGB might find this one interesting. It s from my favourite TV car show Fifth Gear, and my favourite presenter Tiff Needell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5o2orhvfyvw Snippets from the CMC The latest edition of minutes from the last CMC (Council of Motor Clubs) meeting minutes contained a couple of items which deserve mention to our members. One particular note of interest is the second paragraph in the General Business, which advises that Registration Stickers are no longer issued by the RMS/Service NSW for cars on HVS & CVS. No more.
Page 7 of 15 Additionally, we have been separately advised that number plate recognition is now up and running for H plated & D plated vehicles. (The D plated - modified vehicles - are not applicable to BEAC.) I see you! I read a paper on the application of OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for number plates, and as usual, what seems simple at first thought is actually very complicated. The article is quite long, and possibly not of interest to many of BEAC s membership, but if you would like to have a look at it, it is here http://web.science.mq.edu.au/~len/preprint/hamey-dicta05- automatic.pdf. Page 10 of 15 Tahmoor Inn 22/08/2018 BEAC has not been to Tahmoor Inn for quite a while now, and I was looking forward to the run. The weather co-operated without being wonderful, so a goodly number of members turned up in their pride and joy automobiles for the occasion. A smart looking Pug. Ready and raring to go! A classic among classics. The drive there was a longer and more complex one than we have had for a while, consisting of a large loop off Remembrance Drive around the Pheasant s Nest area, and
Page 11 of 15 another up through Thirlmere and Lakesland, returning via Picton to Tahmoor. I certainly saw some roads around both areas that I have not seen before. We still made it to the Inn by 12.30, in time to order before a bus group arrived and filled the dining area to capacity. The TD2000 and the MGB await the off. The rare Lancia Gamma.
Page 12 of 15 Always good to see the Stag. German classics. The food was delivered quite rapidly and generally went down well. The exception was me. For the first time on a BEAC run, I had a dud meal. The Lamb Shank Pie looked great when it came out, but the meat on the shank was so tough and stringy as to be virtually inedible. I can only put the experience down to bad luck, as Tahmoor has been good on previous visits. Our thanks go to the Carpenters for planning and organising the outing on our behalf. Page 14 of 15 Mittagong Classic Car Display 2018 Just a reminder folks, this is the big one BEAC s only display day for the year. Anyone who attended our last display at the school a couple of years ago will remember what a good day it was. The Triumph Car Club came down from Sydney to join us and swell the number of cars on display. This time we have potentially even more cars and clubs joining us for what promises to be a memorable occasion. Even if you (like me) think your car is not really a display item, we hope you will come along and join us to show the flag to the locals in our own back yard!
