AKUMALS FISH REFUGE ZONE

What is de Akumal Fish Refuge? Akumals Fish Refuge is an area of 988 hectares which covers the coast of Akumal, in the municipality of Tulum and a small zone to the north that belongs to the municipality of Solidaridad, in the state of Quintana Roo which has been designated by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Feeding (SAGARPA by its initials in Spanish) for the implementation of guidelines for commercial and sport fishing as complementary management measures for the conservation and sustainable use of species of commercial interest. Coordinates for Akumals Fish Refuge Zone Points Coordinates A 20 24 52.70" 87 17 21.03" B* 20 25 5.79" 87 17 48.28" C 20 21 25.87" 87 20 0.60" D* 20 21 10.78" 87 19 30.93" *The limits of the polygon between point B and C follow the contour of the coast. **Datum: WGS 84

Cobertura (%) Biomasa (g/100m2) Why was this zone designated? The bays of Akumal is an area of confluence of marine and inland waters with a variety of marine ecosystems ranging from the mangrove, sea grass beds, coral reef lagoons and deep and shallow coral reefs. All fragile ecosystems that have a high biodiversity of flora and fauna, which represent a great potential as feeding, breeding and rearing areas for fish. In recent years, these ecosystems have presented significant degradation by various factors, including overfishing of commercially valuable species 600 500 400 300 Pargos y Meros Logarítmica (Pargos y Meros) 200 100 0 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2013 2014 2015 Historical record of fish of commercial interest in Akumal reefs 60 50 40 Macroalga Coral Logarítmica (Macroalga) Logarítmica (Coral) 30 20 10 0 1970 1995 1999 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 Average coverage of coral reefs in Akumal

What are the benefits of the fish refuge? The regulation of commercial, sportrecreational fishing and curbing of poaching in Akumals Fish Refuge Zone, provide protection to the different marine ecosystems within the shelter, reducing the impact caused by fishing. In this way, it will allow populations of marine life within the refuge to be restored to dimensions that can be exploited in a sustainable way in the future. Fish shelters are areas of generation of marine resources that, by not being physically demarcated, generate spillover effect. Generating an increase in both the size of populations of marine resources, and their biodiversity in areas surrounding the shelter. From the economic point of view, the creation of shelter fishing generates the possibility that properties surrounding the fish refuge will have an increment on their value. Likewise, providers of tourist services (hotels, restaurants, tour operators, etc.) will have an added value to offer their services within the area of the fishing shelter

Who will be in charge of supervising that the guidelines are followed? The authority responsible for verifying that the fishing guidelines in the fish refuge zone are the National Aquaculture and Fishing Committee (CONAPESCA) and the Mexican Navy. WE invite everyone to participate in the care of our marine resources making complaints about any irregularities observed in the area of refuge. Complaints can be made directly via the Internet through the internet portal of CONAPESCA: http://sidepi.conapesca.gob.mx:8080/capturadenuncia.jsp The complaint can be anonymous, you only need: Date and time of the event Place or location where the action observed. A brief description of the facts And if possible digital photographs of the irregularity

What are the new rules for fishing inside Akumals Fish Refuge? Commercial fishing for any type of marine flora and fauna is forbidden. Sport fishing can only be done as a catch and release activity. Commercial fishing and domestic consumption fishing of Lion Fish (Pterois volitans), can only be done free diving and only with spear guns that use rubber, spring or pneumatic energy. In addition to the above guidelines, those set forth in NOM- 017 -PESC and Regulation of the Fisheries Act remain valid, and corresponding to the NOM- 059- SEMARNAT2010 and all applicable environmental protection laws. What us the life time of the Fish Refuge? Akumals Fish refuge has a lifetime of 6 years from the time of its publication on the official federal newspaper on Monday 13 of April 2015. Lets work together for a sustainable use of our natural mairne resources!!!!!
