St. Andrew Goes Beyond the Veil October th, - October th, Hosted by Barony of An Dubhaigeainn - Middle Island, NY St. Andrew s travels have brought him to a time of remembrance of things past but not quite gone - things that should not be forgotten. While he stands at the crossroads, St Andrew ponders the past and the shadows, and the things that live in between. Come celebrate this otherworldly time of year with him as his home Barony of An Dubhaigeainn celebrates the final harvest season of the year in style. There will be entertainments galore as we celebrate this special time. For folks who wish to honor the Unseelie Court or any other creatures that go bump in the night, come dressed as the Fae/Fairy or other creature that goes bump in the night that you would be if you were not born of these mortal modern times. Masks are encouraged! For folks wishing to trade a ghost story or some seasonal music, there will be a bardic competition during the feast, with the theme being ghost stories and other seasonal tales, either told or sung. For those staying overnight, there will also be a firepit later in the evening around which to share your ghostly encounters with others of like mind. For the light of foot, there will be dancing by torchlight (weather permitting) to such old SCA dance staples as Hole-in-the-Wall, Miller in the Middle, and Black Nag, among many others. Master Richard the Poor will be our Dance Master for the day. Dance steps will be taught during the day in preparation. A contest will be held for the ghostliest encampment. There will be seasonally-themed activities for the children. We hope to include turnip-painting, mask-making, and a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt. For the more martial-minded, a tourney will be held to decide our next Baronial Heavy List Champion. All are welcome to participate but there can be only one, Baronial Champion, that is. (There shall be other prizes awarded, as well.) Tourney theme and rules to follow. Watch this site for updates. Other martial activities, for fencing, archery, and thrown weapons are planned, with all tourneys and competitions being themed for the event. Watch this space for updates on these martial activities, including tourney themes and rules. A Dayboard and Feast fitting the seasonal theme shall be presented by our very own Duchess Isabella of York. A hearty Below-the-Salt Elizabethan feast shall be served to most attending. Heralds Corner A very relaxed court for their excellencies, Baron David Vasquez de Valencia and Baroness Suzanne Neuber de Londres opened under the lovely shade of the trees. The first order of business was the archery champion, and Genvieve Velleman was called into court. She described the theme of the tournament and the challenges. The winner with the most points was a tie between Lord Rufus and Lord Eanraig. The winner of those competing for the baronial champion was Lord Peter of Hawkwood. As the baroness put the mantle of champion onto him it was noted that he was the first ever to wear it. Their excellencies not done with Lord Peter, informed the populace as to his hard work done for many years, with small breaks, running camp at Pennsic. And the crowd cheered. Their excellencies then invited up Travis, and asked him to talk about his competition in thrown weapons. He gave a very heartfelt thanks for everybody that competed, and named Michael Leg Bain the winner. As Baron David transferred the spear of champion to Michael, he described how Travis has leapt in with both feet of being involved in the SCA, not only being thrown weapons champion, but also becoming a marshall. Lady Hugoline the Delicate was then called up, and after singing a delightful little filk she wrote about the barony, she told everybody about the bardic competition she held. The theme was of course Arrows, Axes, or Ales or anything related to those, such as warfare or drinking in general. Bonus points were awarded for audience participation. She announced the winner was Zeus, and runner up was Raud. The next person their excellencies welcomed before them was Lord Titus, who judged the brewing competition. For the novice category, Padraig was the winner for his Brigits mead, a spiced herbal mead, and Lady Fiona s spiced mead won for the experienced category. The populace choice winner was a tie between Fiona s ciser and her spiced meads. There was a special unannounced and unintentional competition, the winner of the most yellowjackets drowned in their mead was Michael Leg Bain, with no less than wasp corpses floating in his bottle. Their excellencies spoke to this last year of their term as Baron and Baroness. They encouraged anybody who is considering running for the position to talk to them about the work that goes on behind the scenes, and they will be accepting names for the vote up to and in the morning of the St. Andrews event on October th. The candidates will be announced at court that day, and polling to begin in the spring. Lady Jenna Childslayer asked to address the populace so she was invited into court. She talked about upcoming events in our neighboring province of Ostgardr, and invited and encouraged everybody to come attend. The newcomers were welcomed into court and given the traditional guest soaps, with the words that their next event they wouldn t get the soap. Because they would not be guests, they re family. A number of Bronze Ducks were handed out, to Lord Ronan, Lady Jenna, Baron Dankwert, Lord Ozurr, Kaalos, Lord Peter, and Lady Slaine. In closing, their excellencies called up Monkey and Lord Akos to thank them for their hard work in putting the event together. They then thanked everybody for coming and thus ended court.
