Description of the area Papėčiai - Petroškai From Juodabale to Petroškai via Rockiai, Mikabaliai, Deminiskai, Zvikeliai, Sakniava/ Palunai, Purviske/Smarliunai, Jakonys and Ruda (corridor already described for Mikabaliai, Deminiskai, Zvikeliai in action plan LT02), in the area Sakniava/ Palunai, Purviske/Smarliunai, Jakonys and Ruda are many lakes and bog areas suitable as migration corridor with additonal small rivers and ditches. Juodabalė - Šlavantai The area is hilly and mainly open, but also a lot of areas are covered with deciduous and pine forests. In the depressions different types of ponds and wetland (swamps, moor areas, etc.) can be found. Some of these water bodies are temporary, only a small number is permanent. Furthermore, a big number of them is densely overgrown and (almost) dried out. Due to the original good water body variation and number turtle occurrences were known and led to the establishment of the herptological reserve Juodobale about 40 years ago. Additionally, a lot of arable land, meadows and pastures and little sandy dry grasslands belong to these areas as well as nowadays a big amount of abandoned land because of the loss of small scale farming. In particular open areas become more and more overgrown by bushes and trees in the last decade. The village Ročkiai is situated close to the herpetological reserve. One main big road (132) with increasing traffic is in the northern part of the area and also another asphalt road (2507) in the southern part. Šlavantai Petroškai A mosaic landscape with small plots of agriculture, abandoned fields, scattered houses, small forests, lakes and wetlands. Status of the target species Emys orbicularis a good local population inhabits the herpetological reserve (> 40 individuals, conservation status 2), Lacerta agilis can be found on the sunnier slopes and is common in the reserve. Much smaller local or even already extinct turtle populations are known in the neighbouring areas Parocke (status unknown but possible extinct (6)), Rockiai (< 10 - < 20 individuals, conservation status 4-5), Didyjis (< 10 individuals, conservation status 5) and Seirijai (status unknown but possible extinct (6)). No turtle observations/ occurrences are known from western part from Rockiai. Especially, Juodabale is known as turtle habitat for a long time and was designated as herpetological reserve in the 70'ties. Despite of the drying out of the whole reserve no 3

conservation and restoration measures were conducted for a long period. The turtles moved to other places around. After the first restoration activities in the end of the 90'ties turtle resettled the area. The situation of the aquatic habitats is very favourable and suitable nesting sites are very near. This is probably the reason that the age structure of this local population is very good having juveniles from different years. The whole area with the amount of water allows a bigger population. Therefore this population can have the important function as source population for the much smaller or even extinct neighbouring populations in Parocke, Rockiai, Didyjis and Seirijai. Small populations of P.fuscus, B.calamita, B.viridis, T.cristatus inhabit the area between Juodabalė and Šlavantai. B. bombina, R.arvalis, R.lessonea bigger local populations. From Zvikeliai to Veisiejai no concrete data about Emys orbicularis occurrences exist but many natural wet places (many lakes, small rivers and ditches) could be inhabited by turtles or at least used for migration. Small populations of E.orbicularis, P.fuscus, B.calamita, B.viridis, T.cristatus inhabit the area from Šlavantai to Petroškai. B. bombina, R.arvalis, R.lessonea bigger local populations. 4
