Safety & Health Awards Program 2012 Award Winners
On behalf of the APA Safety & Health Advisory Committee, I would like to congratulate all of the 2012 Safety and Health Award Winners. Please see the attached list of award winners. Winning mills will be presented with a plaque, recognizing their achievement, and will receive further recognition at APA s 2013 Annual Meeting. The 2012 average WIR for our industry was 8.40, less than last year s WIR of 10.37. The 2012 average TIR was 2.12, which is a slight decrease over last year s TIR of 2.31. We have the trend, once again, headed in the right direction. However, we must all place constant attention to making sure that systems and processes are in place to keep these rates moving in this direction. Our employees deserve it and it is good business. WIR (Weighted Incident Rate) is calculated using both the number and severity of recordable incidents. This is the fifth year that WIR is being used. Awards and reports also show TIR (Total Incident Rate) which has been used in previous years. 2012 2011 2010 2009 2.12 (TIR) 2.31 (TIR) 2.44 (TIR) 2.18 (TIR) 8.40 (WIR) 10.37 (WIR) 10.94 (WIR) 10.64 (WIR) The APA Safety and Health Awards Program is the premier safety award program for the engineered wood industry in North America. 2008 1.99 (TIR) 10.02 (WIR) It encourages and recognizes operational excellence with the goal of reducing injury and illness rates. While awards are limited to APA members, data is collected from both member and non-member mills. Please see the attached 2012 Industry Survey which shows the WIR and TIR for all participating mills. This report also shows average data for three product types: OSB, Plywood and Other. I would like to thank the members of the APA Safety and Health Advisory Committee for their time and work over the past year and encourage you all to participate in the Safety Workshop, to be held in conjunction with the 2013 APA Annual Meeting, scheduled for November 2-5 in Huntington Beach, California. The agenda for this event is taking shape based on your feedback and will contain several relevant topics.
