Hope you all are staying warm and enjoying getting back into the school routine. January 6, 2017 In This Issue: Message from the PSO President Scrip Orders Due Monday, January 9 First off, I d like to give a big thank you to Jana Gateley and all our wonderful bakers for putting on the Staff Cookie Exchange right before our big snow event last month. This annual event is greatly appreciated by the staff, and I heard rumor this year that it served to sustain some of them on their horribly long commutes home! Due to the ice and snow, our December PSO meeting was cancelled, so I hope you ll join us on January 20 th for our next one. We ll have lots to catch up on. How do YOU get to school? We have an exciting opportunity this month for Mary Woodward students. Our school has been chosen by Safe Routes to School and the District Art Lit Coordinator for a brand new project and contest for Walk & Bike to School Day. The first ever Walk to School Day was held in Chicago in 1997. This event, held every October, became international in the year 2000 when Canada and the U.K. joined in on the fun. As time passed, interest grew and an annual Bike to School Day was incorporated in May, 2012. Today thousands of schools across the U.S. and over 40 countries participate in these annual events including Mary Woodward! For the month of January, students will create an illustration about Walk & Bike to School Day, drawing inspiration from one of these three ideas about the benefits of walking and biking to school: 1. It s healthy! Moving our bodies gives us strong bodies and minds. 2. Clean Planet! Walking and biking is a pollution-free way to get to school. 3. Sense of Community! A chance to talk with friends, parents, and neighbors, and a way to see the flowers, wildlife, and beautiful trees. Don t forget: this year s Walk & Bike to School Day is May 10 t h! Two winners will be chosen from each grade, and from these a Grand Prize Winner will be selected. The winning submission will be made into a poster to be displayed throughout the community to promote Walk & Bike to School Day in May. Winners will be announced during an assembly in February and the prizes will be presented by the Mayor of Tigard! It s never too late to sign up to help with Art Lit! Helping hands are always appreciated. Please contact artlitchairs@gmail.com for more information.
