Magnitude of Tourism Various statistics can be helpful to undertake research regarding different schemes and its effectiveness in the field of tourism by Gujarat government. Statistics regarding foreign tourist arrivals, revenue received and sources of foreign tourist arrivals, share of India in tourism of world and Asia and Pacific can be studied with reference to Indian tourism. Below given statistics reveal the data regarding Foreign Tourists Arrivals to Gujarat during the period of 2002-02 to 2011-12. These statistics are bifurcated in Domestic tourists as well as NRI and foreigners during this period. Even it will be helpful to analyze statistics of various regions of India, India as a whole and details of world and Asia pacific region of varied fields like tourist arrivals, foreign exchange receipts, number of hotels and availability of rooms, tourists of different age and their expenses during their trips to Gujarat, number of airports, sources of foreign currency from different countries, Top 10 states with reference to number of tourists and foreign exchange earnings through different states and countries and so on. It will be helpful to analyze present scenario of Gujarat whether Gujarat is on right track with reference to development of tourism sector. Graph 1.1 Chart 1.2 Graph 1.2. Above given statastics are regarding number of tourists visited to Gujarat during the period of 2002 to 2012. If number of touirsts are observed during the period, there is continues rise in number of tourists visited to Gujarat. It is observed that number of tourists visited to Gujarat in the year of 2002-03 were around 61 lacks which increased to about more then 2 crores. It shows high potential for Gujarat to get more number of tourists to Gujarat in future course. On the other hand third column of the table no.1 indicates number of NRI and foreigners visited to Gujarat in the year of 2002 to 2012.. In the year of 2002-03 number of NRI and foreigners was about 65 thousand which increased to about 4 lacks in the year of 2012. It shows good rise and if it is supported by well efforts, government can attract more number of touirst in future too. 69

Graph 1.3 Graph 1.4 Year of 2004-05 indicates fall in number of domestic tourist to Gujarat by about 4 per cent which can be seen in Chart no. 1.3. On the other hand year of 2005 06 indicates highest growth in number of domestic tourists to Gujarat. On the other hand year of 2009-10 indicates lowest rise in number of tourists by only 7 per cent can be seen in Chart no. 1.3. On the other hand Charat no. 1.4 indicates changes in number of tourists in Non Resident Indians and Foreigners visiting Gujarat during the same period. Chart No. 1.4 indicates eye catching rise of about 200 per cent which is really appriciable because there was fall in numbers in the previous year. Minimum growth is also of 5 per cent in the year 2009-10 same as nominal rise in domestic tourists. Global recession of the year 2008 may be responsible for a smaller rise. 70

Graph 2.1 As Tourism industry has got separate identity as industry. It plays important role for its contribution to GDP of any country or state. Above table reveals the fact that tourism contributed about 2.53 per cent in GDP of Gujarat in the year of 2002-03 which increase to 3.53 in the year of 2010. Not only that but it is expected to reach to 8 per cent 71

in the year 2020 and about 10 per cent in the year 2022. However it is predicted but it can be realized by planned efforts. Table 3 indicates statstics regarding domestic tourists visited to Gujarat in the year of 2003. Most tourists are from within Gujarat holds the share of about 50 per cent. On the other hand Maharastra enjoys 20 per cent share in total tourists visited to gujarat. Rajasthan, Southern India and other states enjoy equal share of about 10 per cent. Graph 3.1 72

Graph 4.1 Above table and charat reveal statastic regarding tourists of various age groups, Chart no.4.1 reveals the highest contribution of touirsts between age group of 35-44 about 40 per cent. On the other hand tourist of age group between 25-34 stands at second. And rest age groups enjoy eqal share in total number of tourists. 73

Graph 5.1 Above given statastics help to know where tourists generall spend their money under different heads. Highest spending is over accomodation about 20 per cent. Food, entertainment, Shoping, and transportation enjoy equal share of 10 per cent in total spendings for domestic tourists for their trips in gujarat. Government can make more arrangements for accomodation to cater more options for domestic tourists to make accomodation cheaper and to attract more number of tourists. 74

Graph 6.2. Table no.6and Chart no. 6.1 and 6.2 offer details of number of tourists visited to India during the time period of 2002 to 2012. Undoubtedly there is countinues rise number of tourists visited to Gujarat during the same period. Higest number of tourists are recorded in the year of 2012 i.e. 6.65 million. Year of 2004 has recorded highest growth in number of tourists i.e 26.8 Although year of 2009 has recorded down fall of about 2 per cent tourists visited to India. Even smaller rise is noted in the year of 2008 at about 4 per cent obviously accompanied with global recession. Table 7 reveals details of Foreign Exchange Earning received with the help of tourism industry during the period of 2002 to 2012. Details of foreign exchange earnings are given in Million $ U.S. Year of 2002 indicates Foreign Exchange Earnings of 3103 Million $ U.S. Column two of Table no. 7 reveals the data of change in Foreign Exchange Earnings during the same period. Year of 2003 indicates highest rise of about 44 per cent in Foreign Exchange Earning as compared to the year 2002. On the other hand year of 2009 indicates negative growth of about 2.9 per cent. Table 8 offers the details regarding number of tourist arrivals all over world as well as in specific region of Asia and Pacific. These details help to compare number of tourists all over world and in India. This offers to know the stand of India in tourism industry in world. Number of tourists arrived in world is about 683 million ant about 109 78

million in the year of 2000 in Asia and Pacific region. It is to be noted that number of tourists visited to India is 2.65 million during the same period. It means India enjoys only 0.39 per cent share in number of tourists in global tourism industry where as India enjoys about 2.42 per cent portion in tourism industry in specifically Asia and Pacific region. Chart no. 8.1 indicates the data of tourists arrivals in world as well as in Asia and Pacific region. World tourism faced down fall in number of tourists in the year of 2003 to 691 million from 703.2 million in the year of 2002. On the other hand India faced down fall in number of tourists in the year of 2002 to 2.38 million from 2.54 million in the year of 2001. India enjoys continues rise in number of tourists from 2003 onwards. Moreover, India succeeded to maintain their share or contribution in tourism industry of world as well as Asia and Pacific. In the year of 2008 India attended highest number of tourists i.e. 5.28 million. Moreover, India contributed highest in the year of 2008 in tourism industry of Asia and Pacific during 2000 to 2012 i.e. 2.87. Number of tourists all over world was 917 million in the year 2008 but the year of 2009 has recorded decline in number of tourists to 882 million. Global recession can be responsible for the decline in number of tourists at a global level because year of 2009 has recorded decline even in number of tourists in Asia Pacific region as well as contribution of India in tourism industry of World and Asia Pacific region. Table 9 helps to realize the comparison of tourism industry of Gujarat with other states. This helps to know the number of tourists visited to different states of India. It should be noted that Gujarat fails to achieve it stands in Top 10 in number of tourists arrived in India. Maharashtra achieved 1 st stand with 4.81 million tourists in the year 2011 with contribution of about 25 per cent in total number of tourists visited to India. Tamil Nadu stands at second with 3.37 million tourists and with contribution of 17.3 million in total number of tourists visited India. Kerala enjoys share of 3.8 per cent tourists out of total tourists with 0.73 million tourists in the year of 2011 where as Himachal Pradesh stands at 10 th position with 0.48 million and contribution of 2.5 per cent in total number of tourists to India in the year 2011. One thing should be noted that total contribution of Top 10 states with more number of tourists is registered about 90%. That means other governments including 81

In the year 2010 Maharashtra stands at 1 st with about 50 lacks tourists with contribution of 28.5 per cent tourists in total tourists visited to India in the year of 2010. If it is compared with the contributin of 2011, then Maharashtra faced fall in contribution as compared to 2010. Tamilnadu stands at second with 28 lacks touirsts in 2010, with contribution of 15.7 per cent in total number of tourists visited to India. Kerala stands at 7 th position with about 6 lacks tourists and contribution of 3.7 per cent in total number of tourists visited India during 2010. 83

Comparison of the year 2010 and 2011 shows that Goa lost position of 10 th rank in Top 10. Where as Karnataka got its place in Top 10 in the year 2011 with 9 th rank. Chart 11.1 shows the details regarding total number of tourists during the same period. On the other hand, chart 11.2 shows changes in total number of tourists.highest number of tourists visited India in the year 2008 and 2009. India got highest rise in number of tourists visited to all states is in the year 2003 i.e. 30.1 per cent. Total number 85

of tourissts visited in the year 2008 is 14.38 million. Even nagative growth can also be seen of about 7.8 per cent in the year 2001. On the other hand, lowest rise is in the year of 2000. Table 12 and chart 12.1 caters important details regarding Indian tourism industry. First column offers the details regarding number of tourists visited India in the year of 2010. On the other hand second column of table 12 and chart 12.2 show the details regarding their contribution to Indian tourism in total number of tourists by different countries. As usual USA stands first in contribution to Indian tourism industry. Total number of tourists from USA to India in the year 2010 is 0.916 million that also contributes 16.4 per cent in total number of tourists visited India. UK stands second with contribution of 13.52 per cent in total number of tourists with 0.755 million tourists in the year 2010. Surprisingly Bangladesh stands 3 rd with 0.381 million tourists with contribution of 6.82 per cent. However, the difference between 1 st rank and 3 rd is about 87

more than half of its numbers. France, Japan, Australia and Malaysia enjoy 7 th, 8 th, 9 th and 10 the rank with contribution of 3.90, 2.95, 2.94, and 2.87 respectively. India can improve much better to attract more number of tourists from developed countries to earn handsome source of foreign exchange with attractive tourism schemes and packages offered to these tourists. France stands 1 st in total number of tourists to global tourism industry with 76.8 billion tourists with contribution of 8.17 per cent in global tourism industry. It simply means highest number of tourists all over world is from France. Second position holds by USA with 59.7 billion numbers of tourists with contribution of 6.35 per cent in global tourism industry. Even a country like Turkey managed to get 7 th position in contribution with 2.87 per cent to global tourism industry with 27 billion numbers of tourists. Germany, Malaysia and Mexico stand at 8 th, 9 th, and 10 th position with contribution of 2.86, 2.62 and 2.38 per cent respectively. \ 89

Column 1of 14 offers details regarding rank with highest percentage share of a country. 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th column provide offer details regarding name of the country, total receipts from tourism in US $ billion and percentage share of total receipts of tourism industry in global tourism sector in the year 2010. With receipts of 103.5 US $ billion and contribution of 11.26 per cent in global tourism industry USA stands first. Highest receiver from tourism is USA globally. 91

Second rank with reference to its contribution to tourism receipts enjoys by Spain with 52.5 billion US dollars with contribution of 5.71 per cent. Even China, competitor in different industries with India enjoys 4 th rank with 45.8 billion US $ dollars with its contribution of 4.98 per cent to tourism receipts globally. UK and Australia enjoy 7 th and 8 th rank with 30.4 billion US dollars and 30.1 billion US dollars with contribution of 3.31 and 3.28 per cent respectively. Smaller countries like Hongkong and Turkey enjoy 9 th and 10 th rank with 23 billion US dollars and 20.8 billion US dollars with contribution of 2.50 per cent and 2.26 per cent respectively. India has recorded 14.2 billion US dollars of receipts with contribution of only 1.54 per cent in global tourism industry during the year 2010 which is quite less as compared to other countries in Top 10 in global tourism industry. Table 15 offers details regarding share of India in international tourist arrivals in World and Asia Pacific region during 2000 to 2010. First column indicates duration. Second and third column indicate details of tourist arrivals at world level and in Asia Pacific region. Third column indicates number of tourists arrivals in India in million. On the other hand last two columns indicate percentage share of India at world level and in Asia Pacific region. In the year 2000 number of tourist arrivals at world level was 683.3 million and 109.3 million in Asia Pacific region. In the same year India enjoys 2.65 million numbers of tourists with contribution of 0.39 per cent at global level and 2.42 per cent in Asia Pacific region. Except 2001 and 2002, India recorded rise in number of tourists and its contribution at global level and in Asia Pacific region. In the year 2002 total number of tourists visited to India was 2.38 million as compared to 2.54 million in previous year. Even contribution also declined from 2.22 per cent to 1.93 in Asia Pacific and from 0.37 per cent to 0.34 per cent at global level. Highest number of tourists visited to India during this period was in 5.17 million in the year 2008 with contribution of 0.59 per cent at global level and 2.74 per cent in Asia and Pacific region. Lowest number of tourists visited India was in the year 2002 with 2.38 million tourists and contribution of 0.34 per cent and 1.93 per cent at world level and in Asia Pacific region respectively. Column 1 of Table 16 indicates duration and second column indicates number tourist arrivals in lacks through major airports to India during 2001 to 2011. Highest number of tourists arrivals during same period through major airports are in the year 2011 with 63 lacks. Moreover, more utilzation by foreign tourists arrivals is airport of Delhi because of more number of flight arrivals and from various destinations to Delhi. Indian government can make more efforts to create world class airports with more fleet capacity to other airports too. Even government can build more international airports to major destinations to India. 97

Second most utilization of airports is Mumbai because of its world class airpots and more fleet capacity as comparted to other cities. Even Chennai also stands at 3 rd major utilization by foregin tourist arrivals. Highest amount sanctioned to Kerala in 11 th five year plan. Even Himachal Pradesh also got handsome amount for the development of tourism in 11 th five year plan. Madhya Pradesh, Tamilnadu, U.P. and West Bengal also got sound amount for the development of tourism. Gujarat government got 5.81 crores, 21.33 crores, 7.33 crores, 0.14 crores and 51.75 crores in the year 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 respectively. Gujarat government is needed to utilize it at maximum to develop tourism industry and to be out with attractive schemes to attract foreign tourists. 100

Maharashtra has highest number of five star hotels i.e. 30 with 3626 number of rooms. Gujarat has 1 hotel of one star hotel with 10 rooms. 9 hotels of two star category with 461 rooms. Above Gujarat has 13 three star hotels with capacity of 847 rooms. Gujarat has 5 four star category of hotels with capacity of 279 rooms. More over, Gujarat enjoys 9 five star hotels with capacity of 742 rooms. Gujarat can make better infrastructure with more airports, by road connectivity as well as world class hotels to accommodate foregin tourists and to fulfill their state of art amanity needs.
