General Information A Place in the Sun Garden Hotel is in a quiet neighborhood located about a block east of South Palm Canyon Drive, one of the main arterials running through downtown Palm Springs. This historical inn, said to have been built as a retreat for the production crew of the film classic A Place in the Sun, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters, and Montgomery Cliff, was built in 1951. It is situated on approximately one acre of well-manicured grounds that go street-tostreet from San Lorenzo Road on the south, to South Riverside Drive on the north. Owned and operated by owners Norma and Ron Van Meeteren since October of 1999, A Place in the Sun enjoys a large repeat guest clientele, and is pet and family friendly. This unique inn is comprised of eighteen single story units, with about 11,880 square feet, on just under an acre of lush lawns and fragrant gardens. There is an office with small lobby where continental breakfast items are available to guests, an extensive library of movies and books, and putters and balls for the putting green, are available for check-out; and fluffy pool towels can also be checked out. The laundry room has two washers and two dryers (owned, not leased). All linens are washed on-site. There is also an employee restroom, and large maintenance room behind the office. These light and bright units surround a heated saltwater pool and separate saltwater spa. There is a professional artificial turf putting green, and poolside gazebo with natural gas BBQ, food stations, tables and chairs, and heaters for outdoor entertaining on cooler nights. A custom micromist system has been installed all around the gazebo, with custom rings around each of the 8 palm trees surrounding the pool. When temperatures are hot and humidity is low, this micromist system can bring triple digit summer temperatures into the comfortable 80 s. There are a variety of units, ranging from the most economical, which is a standard studio, to the spacious two bedroom/two bath bungalow with fireplace. GRANINGER Florals and earth tones make the living room a bright place for entertaining in one of the bungalows at A Place in the Sun in Palm Springs. Said to have been built in the early 1950s as a production retreat for the cast and crew of A Place in the Sun starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift, the hotel by the same name is a favorite of many loyal long-time guests. The 1951 movie version of A Place in the Sun was shot in Lake Tahoe, and stars Clift as George Eastman, who goes to work for his well-to-do uncle and ends up paying the ultimate price for becoming involved with two women Angela Vickers (played by Elizabeth Taylor at the age of 17) and Alice Tripp (played by Shelley Winters). The question is: did he or didn't he commit murder?
