I S S U E 2 2 0 1 3 WINTER 2013 ZONTA BRISBANE METRO BREAKFAST CLUB INC NEWSLETTER WINTER 2013 A Note from the President This year seems to be slipping away quickly. Here we are in June already. June is the commencement of the New Year for Zonta. The Board of our Club has been elected as follows: President. Leanne O Shea Vice President Michelle Baran Treasurer. Tricia Walker Minutes Secretary.. Karen Billsborough Correspondence Secretary Leida Pirts Immediate Past President. Emma Turner Our Committees Chairs are as follows: Service. Michelle Baran Advocacy. Leida Pirts Membership Isobelle Toralba In my last newsletter I referred to our next fundraising event of a fashion parade. Amena, Violetta and Jan presented to the club a programme for a joint fundraising event for Brisbane Zonta Clubs and this has become a Fashion Showcase to be held on 15 June at the newly renovated Brisbane City Hall. Our club is joining with the Zonta Clubs of Brisbane, Brisbane North and Pine Rivers to present the fashion Showcase with renowned Australian designers, Sasha Drake, Julia Tengdahl and Pia du Pradal. Tickets for the event, which will be compered by Lisa Newman and Cynthia Morton, are sold out. Our ladies have put so much style and effort into this professional production that I am sure that it will be a huge success. Other events coming up are our Trivia Night on 15 August 2013 at the Chalk Hotel and our Trash & Treasure Sale on 24 August 2013 at West End. Best wishes, Leanne

Events International Women s Day Several members attended IWD events. Leanne attended the Zonta Brisbane River IWD breakfast held at the Greek Club. The guest speaker for the event was Lisa Newman. Leanne was seated with Beverly from the Murri Sisters who operate a domestic violence refuge for women who suffer domestic violence and have to leave their home. The UN IWB Breakfast was well attended at the Brisbane Convention Centre. Zontians from various clubs also came together at the Zonta Wynnum Redlands IWD Dinner with guest speaker (and yodeler) Mayor Karen Williams of Redlands Shire. The White Apartment Streetlevel Grand Opening The Brisbane Streetlevel Mission is a new cause the club has been supporting this year, with members donating goods and time. In March, Amena attended the grand opening of Streetlevel s new building in Fortitude Valley Streetlevel Streetlevel

Brisbane Youth Detention Centre BYDC Induction In March a BYDC induction session was attended by Leanne O Shea, Catherine Cosser, Leida Pirts, Michelle Baran, Ruth McKeown, Flora DiLizio and Chantell Taylor. The session was facilitated by Tracy Bright, Program Coordinator at BYDC and her informative yet informal style made for a fun and practical session. The session was held at the Children s Court which was somewhat appropriate given this is where the BYDC youth begin their BYDC journey. Tracy provided us with tips and suggestions on a range of topics including what to wear, what to say, how to engage the girls, BYDC s vision and goal, types of offences, accommodation, demographics and a typical day for the girls. Club members asked loads of questions and something new was learnt by all. Another session is being planned for June or July. Interested club members should contact Karen Billsborough. The grounds of the BYDC Inside the BYDC Fundraising News Sportsman s Lunch The AFL Sportsman s Lunch was held at the Chalk Hotel on 12 March. This event was made possible by the Chalk Hotel, to whom we are very grateful for the support. A lovely bottle of Grange was auctioned at the lunch for $1,500.00, and the winning bidder was Bevan Lynch, who has been a tireless supporter of our club for many years. The funds raised from the lunch have been donated direct to Project NOW. Well done and thank you to Amena and Robbie O Neill for their efforts at this event.

Fundraising News Legally Blonde This fundraising event was held on 10 March 2013 at QPAC. While many of our members were also involved in this afternoon of fun, special mention must be made of Amena and Violetta for their organisation of the event! With 62 attendees, an enjoyable afternoon was had by all - as the pictures have shown. Approximately $1,500.00 was also raised at this event. Another excellent result!

Breast Cushion News Breast Cushion Sewing Bee Many members enjoyed a morning of sewing at the first sewing bee of the year on 21 April 2013. We were very happy to be joined by two ladies from Street Level, Elizabeth & Marilyn who assisted us with the afternoon s activities. While the challenge was laid down to make as many cushions as the last sewing bee, something like 48, we were very satisfied to have produced 27 on this occasion. Many thanks to Emma for hosting the sewing bee and to all of those who attended. Wesley Hospital Leida and Flora attended the Wesley Donor Appreciation Afternoon Tea here with Dr Louis Prado

Area 1 & 3 Meeting Zontians from Areas 1 & 3 gathered at the Queensland Cricketers Club on 16 March for a day of information, inspiration and fellowship. Our club was well represented. Amena, as Area Director, helped organize and open the event. During the Service Showcase, Karen spoke about our club s involvement with the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre a service project that is unique in the area. Elaine, as District Treasurer, guided clubs through their financial obligations and using internet banking. Other topics covered by speakers included advocacy projects (including Zonta Says No 25 November), the importance of web presence, and visibility and credibility. The day concluded with a fellowship dinner at the Diana Hotel. Powerpoint slides for all presentations are available at www.zontadistrict22.org. June Marie July Elaine & Leanne Birthdays!
